ONE Championship: Legendary Superlek out to prove people wrong after ONE 172 horror show
The ONE flyweight kickboxing world champion has long been regarded as one of the finest strikers on the planet: calm and humble outside the ring, ruthless and precise inside it – the 'Kicking Machine' had built an aura few could touch.
That was until ONE 172 in Japan earlier this year. Heading into fight week, Superlek held two world titles and was riding a 13-fight winning streak.
But things started to unravel in unexpected fashion. The Thai superstar failed the pre-fight weigh-in and hydration tests, losing his flyweight Muay Thai belt on the scale.
Days later, he suffered a shocking unanimous decision defeat to 20-year-old French-Algerian Nabil Anane, who also became the first man to score a knockdown against Superlek.

Hong Kong mixed-doubles badminton duo Tang Chun-man, Tse Ying-suet to bow out next year
Decorated Hong Kong badminton mixed-doubles pair Tang Chun-man and Tse Ying-suet, who reached the Japan Open quarter-finals on Thursday, said the Asian Games in Nagoya next year would be their final tournament together. Tse, who had a tumour removed from her pelvic cavity earlier this year, renewed her long-term partnership with Tang just two weeks before the Asian Championships in Ningbo in April. There, the left-handed duo won the first continental title of their career, before adding two more podium finishes on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) tour in Thailand and Singapore. However, the end appears to be looming for the pair, who have also won two world championship bronze medals and one Asian Games silver medal between them. 'There were three important tournaments for us this year, with the regional championships being the first one,' said the 30-year-old Tang. 'There are also the World Championships and the National Games; these three tournaments were actually the reasons we got back together. Manny Pacquiao set to spring surprise as he targets Mario Barrios' belt in comeback fight
Former world champion Manny Pacquiao is embracing his underdog status as he gets ready to turn back the clock when he steps out of retirement to face WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios in their Saturday showdown at the MGM Grand. The 46-year-old Filipino feels rejuvenated after four years away from the ring and said he was returning for another opportunity to make history. 'I'm enjoying training camp as much as I did when I was 26 or 29 years old. The motivation to train hard and the discipline are the same,' Pacquiao said at Wednesday's press conference. 'I mean, it's because I've been away from boxing [that] I'm still interested and passionate about fighting.' The veteran fighter retired from boxing in 2021. He had a stint in the Philippine Senate from 2016 to 2022 and an unsuccessful 2022 presidential bid. Pacquiao beat Keith Thurman to become the oldest welterweight world champion at age 40.
