Aston Martin warns on profit due to tariff disruption, weak Chinese demand

July 30 (Reuters) - British luxury carmaker Aston Martin (AML.L), opens new tab issued a profit warning on Wednesday citing the impact of U.S. import tariffs and prolonged suppressed Asian demand linked to China's economic slowdown.
The brand associated with fictional secret agent James Bond said it now expects adjusted operating profit to roughly break even this year, compared with its earlier forecast of positive operating earnings.
U.S. tariffs have pummelled global automakers, forcing companies like GM (GM.N), opens new tab, Volkswagen (VOWG.DE), opens new tab, Hyundai (005380.KS), opens new tab, and Porsche (P911_p.DE), opens new tab to book billions of dollars of losses, issue profit warnings, or slash their forecasts.
"The evolving and disruptive U.S. tariff situation was unhelpful to our operations in Q2," CEO Adrian Hallmark said.
He also warned that demand in the Asia-Pacific region would remain suppressed in the near term due to a weak macroeconomic environment there.
China's export-driven economy is slowing under pressure from a trade war with the United States, and its consumers are tightening their belts in the face of future uncertainty.
Sales in Asia-Pacific, which account for more than a quarter of Aston Martin's revenue, fell 9% in the first half of 2025, with volumes in China broadly flat, the company said.
In a measure aimed at managing tariff-driven expenses, Aston Martin limited shipments to the U.S. earlier this year in order to sell down its inventory and announced it would split duty-related costs with its customers.
It said on Wednesday it resumed shipments to the United States in June before the finalisation of a U.S.-UK trade deal that sets a 10% U.S. tariff rate on an annual quota of 100,000 imported British cars.
Higher tariffs may hurt demand, disrupt distribution, and raise costs for the company, which is responding by reviewing supply chain and pricing strategies to reduce possible negative impacts, it said.
Between July 16 and 25, companies in the Reuters global tariff tracker said they expected to lose a combined $7.1 billion to $8.3 billion for the full year due to the import levies.

Lando Norris secured a crucial win to his Formula 1 title bid with superb execution of an alternative strategy at the Hungarian Grand Prix. While most pitted twice, the Brit made it work with just one change of tyres and went from fifth place by the end of lap one to victory over championship rival Oscar Piastri. The Aussie piled the pressure on his team-mate over the final few laps having closed to within DRS range with fresher tyres. But a lock-up on the penultimate lap which almost saw him plough into the other McLaren lost him crucial time and gave Norris the breathing room he needed to get over the line. Having taken a surprise pole position, Leclerc's first job was to make sure he still led the race by the end of the first lap. And he did exactly that with a superb launch off the line which did not give Piastri behind him even a sniff of a chance to overtake. To make matters worse for McLaren, any chance they had of getting their cars to work together to reel in the Ferrari was lost through a horrible start for Norris. He lost speed weaving on the run down to the first corner and then braked far earlier than others, allowing first Russell and then Alonso to sweep around the outside. It was not long before he was back ahead of the Aston Martin but found the Mercedes of Russell trickier to get past. His team-mate was having similar issues, having fallen to more than three seconds behind Leclerc in the opening 10 laps. Having struggled to close that gap, the instruction came over the radio on lap 19: "Box to overtake Leclerc." Ferrari were able to defend against the undercut by bringing their driver in a lap later, but when he re-emerged onto the track that three-second advantage had been cut down to just one. Crucially, though, after the warm-up lap on the new hard tyres, Leclerc got DRS and a tow from Alonso down the main straight before diving up the inside of the Aston Martin. It took Piastri a full lap to get by the Spaniard himself, which gave the Ferrari man some welcome breathing space. Norris stayed out throughout all this, seemingly angling for a one-stop strategy. He was losing half-a-second per lap compared to those behind who had pitted at the time but he would have a clear advantage later in the race, so it had already turned into an intriguing strategy battle between the two title rivals. Further back, Verstappen had started strongly from eighth with a couple of overtakes in the opening laps. But Red Bull's decision to bring him in earlier than some of the other cars around him backfired as he emerged from the pit lane in a lot of traffic and losing a lot more time than he would have liked. It took him an age to get past Hamilton in the Ferrari and, when he did, they appeared to make contact and the Ferrari ended up going off the track briefly. Verstappen got ahead but the Dutchman was under scrutiny and it was confirmed that his move would be investigated after the race. Back at the front, and Norris' one-stop strategy was working a treat as he was well within the pit window of the cars ahead by the time he made his stop. Piastri was presented with two options over the radio: Did he want to race Leclerc, or cover off his team-mate and title rival? The Aussie made it clear he was mostly interested in beating Norris and so came a superbly-executed bluff from McLaren. "Box to overtake" was again the call, but made before Leclerc reached the pit entry and so Ferrari hastily brought in their driver to negate any risk of an undercut. Except Piastri never planned to change his tyres at that point. What it gave him was the clear air he needed to stretch out the gap between him and his title rival, which was increasing all the time that Norris was stuck behind fellow Brit Russell up until lap 44 when Mercedes pulled their driver in. Piastri pitted and had to get past Leclerc before hunting down his team-mate, but didn't take long to dispatch the Ferrari this time. And then he was haring after Norris, closing the gap quickly with his fresher tyres but knowing that he had to overtake to get the job done. In Leclerc's cockpit, there was a Monegasque driver growing ever more angry. He was not pleased with the timing of his second pit stop and complained about his "undriveable" Ferrari as he lost time with every lap to those around him. "It will be a miracle if we finish on the podium," he said on lap 53, with Russell four seconds behind and closing fast. He held off the Mercedes for as long as he could but was passed with eight laps to go, Russell then speeding off into the distance with the podium all-but secured. And the other looming duel would soon begin with Piastri almost within striking range of Norris ahead.

Zak Brown believes that Formula 1 rivalry will be in a healthier place without the departed Red Bull team boss Christian Horner. Brown and Horner have regularly butted heads in recent seasons, and while there appears to be a semblance of mutual respect in Toto Wolff — the Mercedes team principal — and Horner's rivalry, the Brit and the McLaren CEO genuinely do not like one another. Horner, who was team principal and CEO, was sacked by Red Bull last month after the British Grand Prix and replaced by Laurent Mekies. 'I'm happy he's in the role he's in, I like Laurent, and I think that'll be healthy, and maybe we can get back to focusing on competition on the track and where there's always going to be some political aspects to the sport, I think it's going to be healthier with Laurent,' Brown said. 'It went too far [with Horner]. There's always going to be politicking, and let's try and shut down their flexi wings and that stuff. But when you start getting into frivolous allegations, I think that's just going too far. 'I think if I look up and down pit lane now, I see us fighting each other hard, politically, but there being a line that's not crossed. I also think it's important for the benefit of the sport that we all can work together and there's a higher level of trust that if we sit down and have a conversation on a topic… there could be some confidentiality to that, and it's just not an automatic 'I'm going to use that as a political weapon'… that won't get manipulated away for political reasons and taken out of context.' One of the main disputes between Brown and Horner occurred over Red Bull's suspicions that McLaren were cooling their tyres in a manner which broke the rules. No evidence of this was ever found — and the FIA suspect that it was simply clever engineering that has given the championship leaders an edge in this area. In Miami, Brown drank from a bottle on the pit wall labelled 'tire water'. BRADLEY COLLYER/PA 'I think that we'll see a little bit of a change for the better,' Brown said. 'I presume he'll be back, he's young, he's a racer. His credentials are pretty awesome [but] I'm looking forward to racing Red Bull more like we race Ferrari and Mercedes, being more collegiate. 'From a fan's point of view, the drama, the villain stuff, I think works. But I also think the celebratory fight it out on track, but then photo bomb each other [as Ferrari's Fred Vasseur did in Miami], that wasn't pre planned. I think that's really good. That's a more fun way to go racing, and can be just as entertaining as the good cop, bad cop thing. I'm looking forward to that.' McLaren have taken up the mantle of being the sport's leading team from Red Bull, who have declined sharply since the start of last season. A number of key figures have left in recent years. 'Laurent coming in… that was not — or doesn't appear to be — a healthy environment. People leaving, [is a] fact, right? [Adrian] Newey, [Jonathan] Wheatley, Rob [Marshall], Will Courtenay, Dan Fallows — if I look at us at the other extreme, we really haven't lost anybody at the senior level. We've had people join us. So, I think stability is critical.' Brown was asked when the last time he had a meeting with Horner, in the way he had with Mekies on Sunday morning, was. 'Maybe when we were racing each other in Formula 3,' the 53-year-old laughed.
