Erratic spells of rain do little for groundwater levels in Telangana

HYDERABAD: While the recent spells of rain across Hyderabad did offer some relief from the sweltering heat, groundwater levels in the city remain largely unaffected.
The reason? Widespread concretisation that hindered rainwater infiltration, causing most of the runoff to drain into stormwater systems rather than replenishing underground aquifers.
Between May 1 and 15 this year, over 1.14 lakh water tankers were booked by consumers through the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), with a daily average exceeding 7,610 bookings — similar to previous years.
Officials confirmed that the rains had minimal impact on groundwater recharge, with most water flowing into drains instead of soaking into the soil. The groundwater in Hyderabad is classified as overexploited.
Authorities have pointed to the lack of rainwater percolation due to urban development and inadequate implementation of Rain Water Harvesting Structures (RWHS). Though about 45–50% of houses and apartments have RWHS pits, many have become defunct due to poor maintenance. As borewells dry up during summer, the dependency on tankers continues.
Officials said that any noteworthy recharge would require 10 to 15 consecutive days of rainfall. This means that occasional spells of rain are insufficient to restore groundwater levels. Recharge wells, or injection wells, are also being considered as a solution for direct percolation into deeper aquifers. HMWSSB has been promoting RWHS and public awareness on their benefits.
The HMWSSB has urged the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation to enforce stricter compliance under the WALTA Act, particularly by verifying RWHS construction before granting Occupancy Certificates for buildings over 200 square metres. HMWSSB has also offered technical assistance for RWHS installation.

Sagar nearly full, Uttam to release water today

1 2 Hyderabad: After almost 18 years, water will be released from Nagarjunasagar in July. Generally, the Sagar dam reaches full reservoir level (FRL) of 590 feet in Aug. However, this year, due to good inflows from upstream areas on the Krishna River, the Sagar water level has reached 583 feet, with a total water reserve of 293 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft) against the full capacity of 312 tmc ft. Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy would formally open the gates and release water downstream on Tuesday. The irrigation department, through six gates, would release 50,000 cusecs of the total 1.40 lakh cusecs it has been receiving from upstream areas every day. It would help the farmers of both Telangana and AP irrigate about 11 lakh acres in the upcoming kharif season. The AP govt, which controls the Srisailam project upstream of Nagarjunasagar, started releasing water in the past few days. Against the FRL of 885 feet, the present level at Srisailam is 882 feet. Irrigation officials said that for the kharif season, the farmers might require 60-65 tmcft of water. Of the approximately 11 lakh acres in both Telugu states, the ayacut in Telangana is about seven lakh acres under the Nagarjunasagar left bank canal. Generally, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) undertakes emergency pumping to provide water during peak summer as Sagar is now the primary source of water to the city. Of the 590 million gallons per day (MGD), the city gets 490 from Krishna three phases. This year, the water board was under pressure to meet the demand as temperatures started soaring in Feb-March itself.

Heavy Rain Warning for Telangana: Residents Advised to Stay Indoors

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy rainfall across the state of Telangana starting today, with torrential downpours already affecting several districts since Wednesday morning. Hyderabad and its suburbs are experiencing particularly intense rainfall, prompting authorities to advise citizens to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. The department has forecast that heavy rains will persist throughout various parts of Telangana for the next four days, with the north and northeast regions expected to experience very heavy rainfall. Consequently, water levels in the Godavari River are rising, leading the government to implement measures for relocating residents from areas prone to flooding, particularly river basins and low-lying regions. Hyderabad has faced daily rainfall of varying intensities, causing congestion and delays on the roads. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed senior officials to ensure the public does not face undue difficulties due to the weather. In a recent review meeting with district collectors, he emphasised that any negligence on the part of authorities will not be tolerated. He also urged the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), police, and disaster response teams to remain vigilant and to take proactive measures to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases following the rains. Traffic congestion is expected to exacerbate in areas including Kukatpally, Ameerpet, Balanagar, Panjagutta, and others, with reports indicating that even minor rainfall can bring vehicular movement to a standstill. Commuters have shared their frustrations, likening the experience of being stuck in traffic to the mythological figure Abhimanyu trapped in the Padma Vayuham. Calls for assistance to emergency services have resulted in delays, as operators attempt to identify the relevant police station for those reporting traffic issues. In light of the anticipated weather conditions, motorists are advised to consider alternative routes and to limit travel unless necessary. Officials continue to stress the importance of staying safe and keeping off the roads during this hazardous period.

Bookings for water tanker surge by 36 per cent amid scanty rains in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: With rainfall remaining scarce recently, Hyderabad is witnessing a sharp 36% spike in water tanker bookings compared to the same period last year. HMWSSB managing director K Ashok Reddy has directed officials to stay prepared for further increases in bookings, citing depleted groundwater levels across several parts of the city. Between July 1 and 14 last year, 63,724 tankers were booked, while this year, the number has jumped to 86,520. Out of the nearly 14 lakh connections under the Water Board's jurisdiction, around 42,000 households have relied on tankers for their water needs. However, just 500 users accounted for 31,000 tanker bookings during the 75-day summer stretch, while 22,000 users booked 90% of the total 2.84 lakh tankers. A survey conducted by HMWSSB revealed that many of these households lacked Rain Water Harvesting Structures (RWHS). In response, notices were issued and awareness campaigns launched, urging residents to construct RWHS pits within 90 days. So far, 16,000 property owners have received notices. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy stated that households larger than 300 square yards within the ORR must install RWHS pits. They warned of possible action, including increased tanker rates, for non-compliance. HMWSSB has been asked to identify and prepare a list of households without RWHS pits within the next month.
