Chamber choir to mark 50 years of music with special concert
The St John Singers (SJS) has been providing a wide variety of music to the community and supporting local charities for half a century.
The group was founded by John Powell as an extension of the St John the Baptist, Bishopstone's church choir.
Since then, it has expanded its scope, offering regular concerts of both church and popular choral music in Salisbury, across the UK and abroad.

St John Singers' leader Stephen Abbott. (Image: St John Singers) The 50th Anniversary Summer Concert will take place on Saturday, July 5, at 7.30pm at St Thomas's Church.
The event will feature two specially commissioned pieces for the occasion, composed by Salisbury Cathedral's director of music, David Halls, and the choir's own leader, Stephen Abbott.
An orchestra and four soloists will accompany the concert, which includes three of Sir John Rutter's summer Madrigals and a full performance of Mozart's Coronation Mass.

Earlier this year, SJS performed in Downton and in Guernsey as part of the island's Literary Festival.
Other events marking the anniversary include a 'Come and Sing' on Saturday, October 11, Choral Evensong in the cathedral on Wednesday, October 15, and the Magic of Christmas event on Tuesday, December 16.
Tickets for concerts are available from choir members, Kit & Caboodle at 62 High Street, Salisbury, and on the door.

SILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Lewis Hamilton says he just wants to enjoy the 'F1' movie's success as he warned Thursday that rushing a sequel would be 'the worst thing we probably could do.' The seven-time Formula 1 champion was an executive producer on the film, which stars Brad Pitt as a hard-bitten racer making a late-career comeback. It became Apple's biggest box-office hit yet when it debuted with $55.6 million in North American theaters and $144 million globally over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. 'We literally just finished it, so I think the last thing we want right now is a sequel,' Hamilton said Thursday ahead of the British Grand Prix. 'It's been four years in the making. It was a lot of work, particularly for (director Joseph Kosinski). It's time away from your family, it's time away from your kids, and also you need this to just simmer for a while, you know. Like, let's enjoy it. 'I think the worst thing we probably could do is to rush into doing a sequel,' the Ferrari driver added. 'Most sequels are way worse, and so we don't need to rush it. I think if we do do a sequel, I would say let's really, really take our time in getting it even better.' Hamilton said he was bringing F1 race-track procedures to the movie business by asking for a 'debrief' on the project, in the same way a team analyzes a race before heading to the next one. 'Let's review what we did, what we could have done better,' he said. DC Studios is about to kick off a new era of the DC Universe with Superman, written and directed by Gunn, on Friday, July 11. Dastmalchian — whose long list of credits includes The Dark Knight, the Ant-Man trilogy, Oppenheimer, Late Night with the Devil and most recently, Murderbot and The Life of Chuck — began hosting Grave Conversations on Instagram and YouTube in April 2024.
