MMK demands Muslim representation, repeal of Waqf Act at Madurai conference
2
Madurai: Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president M H Jawahirullah on Sunday called for proportional political representation for Muslims and demanded the repeal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, alleging it was unconstitutional and aimed at dismantling minority institutions.
Addressing a state-level public conference organised by the MMK in Madurai, he said the party's struggle was not for power but to uphold secularism, protect minority rights, and promote inclusive governance.
Thousands of supporters took part in a four-kilometre rally from P C Perungayam junction to Amma Thidal near Vandiyur Toll Plaza, carrying party flags and placards while raising slogans in support of Muslim representation and Waqf protection.
City police deployed additional forces and enforced traffic diversions to ensure order.
In his speech, Jawahirullah said that despite making up over 14% of the population, Muslims remain severely under-represented in Indian politics. "We need at least 80 Muslim MPs in the Lok Sabha to match our population. In the Chennai Corporation, only four out of 200 councillors are Muslim. Every party, from the panchayat level to Parliament, must address this imbalance," he said.
He urged both ruling and opposition parties, including DMK, Congress, and AIADMK, to ensure fair representation for Muslims. "That is the purpose of this conference," he said.
Slamming the recent amendments to the Waqf Act, he claimed they were designed to weaken the Waqf boards and seize their properties. "The BJP government is using the new portal as a tool to loot Waqf assets. We are prepared to launch protests similar to the farmers' agitation if the Act is not repealed," he warned.
The conference passed 10 resolutions. Key among them were demands for proportional political representation for Muslims, the repeal of the amended Waqf Act, and the establishment of a fully functional Waqf Development Corporation. The MMK also called for a ban on EVMs and VVPATs, citing a lack of trust in the system.
Other resolutions condemned Israel for "genocide" in Palestine and criticised US support. The party demanded that India sever ties with Israel, ban the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, and take a strong stand at the UN.
The MMK also condemned Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar's recent remarks on removing 'secularism' and 'socialism' from the Constitution. It praised the Tamil Nadu government for standing up to "fascist forces" and called for Muslim identity and history to be included in school curricula. It also sought better facilities at the Sikkandar Dargah on Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai and improved conditions for undertrial Muslim prisoners.
"This is not about electoral seats or political gain," Jawahirullah concluded. "This is about dignity, rights, and a rightful place for Muslims in this country."
MMK MLA Abdul Samad, speaking earlier, vowed that the party would resist any attempt to implement the Waqf Act in its current form.

Maharashtra govt tables bill to amend slum act, enable SRA to recover dues
The Maharashtra government on Tuesday tabled a bill in the state assembly that proposes to amend the law concerning slum redevelopment, allowing the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to recover pending transit rent dues from builders or developers. The bill seeks to amend the Maharashtra Slum Area (Improvement, Clearance and Redevelopment) Act, 1971. It also seeks to treat unpaid rent to slum dwellers as arrears of land revenue, thereby empowering the SRA to initiate recovery proceedings under the Maharashtra Land Revenue Code (MLRC). "The SRA hopes that the amendments will help fast-track its projects and also ensure slum dwellers are not left in the lurch without their rightful rent," an official said. As per the proposed amendment, if a defaulting builder lacks sufficient company assets to clear the dues, the liability can extend to the personal property of its directors or partners. Currently, the SRA can issue stop-work notices or deny new permissions to defaulter developer. Officials, however, say that even as the stop work notice is issued, slum dwellers are left in lurch with no rent and the lack of stronger punitive measures lead to widespread non-payment of rent, which is why amendment is necessary. The bill also seeks to reduce the window for dissenting slum dwellers to join the SRA schemes - from 120 days to 60 days - once a majority (over 50 per cent) has consented to a redevelopment plan. After the 60-day period, those who do not join the scheme risk losing their claim to on-site rehabilitation and may only be considered for relocation elsewhere, subject to availability. Another provision allows land under slum redevelopment to be handed over to government agencies like MMRDA, MHADA, MSRDC and CIDCO within 30 days of issuance of a letter of intent, enabling faster execution of public sector-led projects.

Daughters in Hindu families have equal rights to ancestral property: Kerala HC
KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has held that the daughter of a person from Hindu community, who passed away after December 2004 in the state, is entitled to an equal share in the ancestral property. The court also ruled that Sections 3 and 4 of the Kerala Joint Hindu Family System (Abolition) Act 1975, which deny such rights, are contrary to Section 6 of the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act 2005 and therefore cannot prevail. Section 3 of the former Act states that no person can claim birthright in ancestral property, while Section 4 declares that a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) in Kerala is deemed to have been partitioned and converted into a tenancy-in-common. Section 6 of the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act 2005 says that a daughter by birth becomes a coparcener in her own right in the same manner as a son. The court made it clear that the State Act prevents any person from claiming a right by birth. But the Central legislation enables a daughter to claim such a right. The court issued its order based on a petition filed by N P Rajani and her three sisters from Kozhikode, who sought their rightful share in the HUF property after their father died in 2005. Their brother, citing a will executed by the father in his favour argued that her claim was barred by the 1975 Kerala Joint Hindu Family System (Abolition) Act, which abolished the joint family system in the state.
