Big profit drop awaits Samsung: could be 56% down, much worse than predicted

Will this force Samsung to raise Galaxy prices? Yes, they'll do it. They'll be tempted to do it, but I hope not. No, prices will stay the same. Why? Well, this could be because of weak sales of its high-performance memory chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) devices and is the world's largest maker of memory chips – the tiny silicon components that store information in everything from our beloved smartphones to computers to AI servers. The company said that tighter US rules limiting the sale of advanced AI chips to China may hurt its business. But industry experts say Samsung also lost ground because it has been slow in delivering its latest memory chips, called HBM (high-bandwidth memory), to one of its most important customers, Nvidia – a leader in AI in March, Samsung said it was making good progress on its new HBM3E 12-layer chips and hoped to start shipping them by June. However, the company now says those chips are still being tested by customers and there's no update yet on when Nvidia might use Samsung's competitors, like SK Hynix and Micron, are already cashing in on the AI boom in the US, while Samsung depends more on China – a market where American restrictions and local competition are slowing analyst, cited by Reuters , said that for Samsung, everything right now depends on catching up in the AI chip race. Without that, it risks falling make things harder, there is also talk of possible new US tariffs on smartphones and other electronics, which could hurt Samsung's phone business too. Plus, because the competition is so intense, Samsung won't be able to easily raise its prices to boost the April-June period, Samsung expects to make around 4.6 trillion Korean won (about $3.36 billion when directly converted) in profit. That's down from 10.4 trillion won a year ago, marking its worst earnings in a year and a half. Total sales are expected to stay almost flat at 74 trillion won (around $54 billion).Looking ahead, Samsung hopes things will improve later this year. New smartphone launches, including foldables – that's set for July 9 – could help, along with gradually rising demand for its AI chips from customers beyond chip manufacturing business (its foundry) is also facing challenges because of the US restrictions on sales to China and lower production levels. But the company expects this business to lose less money in the second half of the year as demand slowly picks up.

Apple's iPhone 17e may cut costs with old OLED tech

A new report from The Elec claims that Apple is planning to launch an iPhone 17e in the spring, a successor to the iPhone 16e, which will reportedly use the same OLED panel as part of the effort to keep costs low. The iPhone 16e is somewhat one of a kind type of iPhone right now. Initially rumored as a next-generation iPhone SE, the iPhone actually took a spot (somewhat) as a part of the iPhone 16 series, despite being released later. This, plus its name, ' iPhone 16e ' (not iPhone SE 4), prompted people to believe that releasing a 'more affordable' iPhone would become a yearly thing for Apple. A new report from South Korea now corroborates this, claiming that indeed we will see an iPhone 17e next spring. Reportedly, the device will keep the costs low with some components, including the OLED display. The report says the OLED for the iPhone 17e would be the same one used in the iPhone 16e , which is the same one used in the iPhone 14. The iPhone 16e. | Image Credit – PhoneArena According to the report, BOE and Samsung would be supplying the display panels. It's also likely that LG Display may also be involved. The iPhone 16e rocks a 6.1-inch OLED display with Face ID. The phone is powered by Apple's A18 chip and is a more affordable alternative to the iPhone 16 family. In April, there were claims that the iPhone 17e was nearing the trial production stage. Back then, it was reported that the device was tentatively scheduled for a May release next year. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is vaguely positioning the iPhone 17e's release timeframe in the first half of next year. And apparently, the e-branded model of iPhone won't be a one-off (or two-off) thing. Kuo also claimed a third generation of the 'affordable' iPhone will reportedly be released in the first half of 2027. The iPhone 16e is considered an upper mid-ranger, starting at $599. It's competing against phones like the Pixel 9a, Galaxy S24 FE, OnePlus 13R, and others. I personally find the iPhone 16e sports just the right amount of power, without all the fancy stuff a regular user won't necessarily be interested in having on their iPhone. The phone covers the basics and does it with flying colors. And as such, I think it's a great idea for this option to continue existing in Apple's portfolio. So yep, I'm delighted a successor is reportedly in the works. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! We may earn a commission if you make a purchase This offer is not available in your area.

Samsung Galaxy S25 FE to have a flagship display

Vlad, 08 July 2025 Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S25 FE will have a flagship display feature, unlike its predecessor from last year. According to a new report out of Samsung's home of South Korea, the company has decided to use a flexible OLED panel for the S25 FE. These are more expensive than rigid OLED panels, and thus are generally only used in flagship smartphones. Even though the S25 FE doesn't fit that bill, Samsung has apparently decided to give it this flagship feature in order to better help differentiate it from the likes of the Galaxy A series. The flexible OLED panels can be bent and thus allow for symmetrical bezels on all sides of the screen too, though it's unclear if Samsung will go this route. Samsung Galaxy S24 FE Anyway, it's an upgrade compared to the S24 FE, and based on previous rumors, there won't be many others. The Galaxy S25 FE could in fact be powered by the same Exynos 2400e SoC as its predecessor. The cameras will be identical too, with one notable exception - the upgraded selfie snapper.
