Etihad Airways' first Airbus A321LR aircraft arrived at Abu Dhabi International Airport on Friday under the flight number EY3210, receiving a spectacular welcome from Etihad employees and key stakeholders who gathered to celebrate this milestone moment.
The arrival of EY3210 supports Etihad's extraordinary growth momentum, with 27 new routes launched or announced this year.
Nine additional A321LR aircraft will arrive throughout 2025, strengthening Abu Dhabi's position as a global aviation hub and supporting the airline's Journey 2030 vision of carrying 38 million passengers annually.

For instance, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi reflects the natural sabkha salt flat terraforms of the UAE with a three-dimensional pentagonal-shaped cluster of buildings, mediated by a green open area that reflects the natural regional water channels known as wadis. Zayed National Museum presents an architectural abstract form which is representational of the wing of a falcon, an iconic cultural element and the national bird of the United Arab Emirates. These soaring structural components serve to announce the Saadiyat Cultural District as a landmark to visitors from afar, while also providing natural ventilation to the internal volumes of the museum, as a more advanced form of the traditional barjeel wind towers. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi utilises traditional watchtowers, in abstract conical forms, which create external shading structures to the museum's entrance, inspired by the region's historical use of passive environmental design technologies. The building also encapsulates its coastal desert context by reflecting the unique colour of the Saadiyat Island sand in its glassfibre and reinforced concrete cladding panels, which are configured in Gehry Partners' signature patterned bond. *Were there any innovations in materials, engineering systems, or digital construction (for example, BIM, 3D modelling, prefabrication) employed to support the project's complexity? The use of AI and VR technologies has helped to streamline efficiency and ensure sustainability and overall quality of the construction. The use of 3D rendering software generates 3D models for advanced logistical planning, and the utilisation of progressive Lidar scanning and AI supports error detection methodologies to validate construction against approved engineering drawings. The trial of Robot Dog with Lidar scanning capabilities was also part of the team's effort to ensure a truly cutting-edge space. *What were the main construction challenges encountered in these projects? Each building presents its own unique challenges. Contemporary design software greatly assists in realising these complex forms and simplifying their load paths and compositions into structures that can be realised yet remain as inspiring as the intent. Numerous mock-ups were made during the design and delivery phases to test the visual impact, proof of concept and performance of each assembly. This enables the design team and all key stakeholders to test, comment and enhance the building design whilst also keeping the design integrity, delivery date and project budget intact. Each building has a different and unique palette of materials which complements the context and concept. *What measures have been taken to ensure long-term structural durability, especially in a coastal desert environment? The selection of construction materials has always had to consider the harsh marine context in which these buildings are located. This has affected the selection of the grade of the metalwork, timber density, durability and the thermal performance of the enclosures, etc. There has also been a conscious effort to resource local materials for sustainability and contextuality. The use of recycled materials (rebar, structural steel, etc) has improved emissions associated with embodied carbon. *How have sustainability considerations been embedded in the construction process and building design? Are there notable features that highlight the project's commitment to environmental responsibility? Sustainable features have been an integral part of the Zayed National Museum's design, to minimise the amount of energy required to illuminate and cool the complex. The latticed towers act as thermal chimneys that draw cool air currents through the museum naturally. Fresh air is captured at a low level and underground cooling pipes release it into the museum's lobby. The heat at the top of the towers draws up air vertically through the galleries due to the thermal stack effect. Air vents at the top take advantage of the negative pressure and draw the hot air out. Instead of artificial heaters, evacuated solar tubes are used to heat water by natural sunlight. Additionally, photovoltaic panels and heat exchangers are placed strategically to further minimise the complex's energy use. The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi has been artfully moulded to ensure natural shade to guests externally. The building enjoys a 49.4 per cent reduction in external heat gains through passive measures such as a highly efficient building envelope. Since the museum will be home to exhibits with high sensitivity to temperature and humidity, this will ensure energy consumption is further reduced with provision for solar panels within the car park shade structures. Some 70 per cent of all timber used on the project is certified from sustainable sources. As much as 95 per cent of all paints, coatings and finishes in the interior spaces will be low emissivity or low VOC materials, in keeping with sustainability goals for the project. Similarly, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, constructed from materials including steel, concrete, wood and aluminium – sourced locally where possible – incorporates sustainable elements appropriate to the region. This includes the natural cooling and ventilation of the covered courtyards through a series of asymmetrical cones which surround the main building and serve as both entrances to the museum and outdoor exhibition spaces. *How was exhibition space flexibility and visitor flow considered in the design and construction of these museums? Exhibition space flexibility and visitor flow have been central to the design philosophy of all three museums. Each institution was envisioned as a dynamic cultural platform able to adapt to evolving curatorial needs and audience expectations. The architecture supports a wide range of exhibition formats, from permanent galleries to immersive, large-scale temporary installations. At Zayed National Museum, this includes the Al Masar Garden, an outdoor gallery space that allows for open-air exhibitions and activations, adding another layer of versatility and engagement. Visitor flow has also been thoughtfully considered to create intuitive, layered journeys that encourage exploration while ensuring comfort and accessibility. Ultimately, the goal is to offer inspiring experiences that are as seamless as they are memorable. *Looking ahead, how might the lessons learned and innovations developed during the construction of these museums influence future large-scale architectural projects in the UAE and beyond? How data centres could help the Gulf meet its climate targets

Data centres that power the Gulf region's burgeoning cloud and AI systems are accounting for an ever-increasing proportion of electricity consumption. If managed well, this nominal increase in the need for power generation can be transformed into a tool for the greater use of renewable energy, helping the GCC countries to realise their ambitious climate goals. Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other Gulf countries are aggressively investing in AI as they seek to maintain their competitiveness in a rapidly evolving global economy. One of the key issues that policymakers must grapple with is how to supply AI infrastructure with the power it needs to operate. Despite the recency of these novel technologies, they already account for almost 2 per cent of global electricity consumption; this figure is set to grow exponentially over the coming decades as AI is integrated into every walk of life. A parallel and ostensibly independent challenge that governments are contending with is the need to decrease carbon emissions as part of the global fight against climate change. The Gulf states have committed to realising carbon neutrality within the next four decades, driving heavy investments in renewable energies such as solar and wind. They also see this as an opportunity to develop a comparative advantage in the probable successor to fossil fuels, as reflected in Abu Dhabi's Masdar becoming a global supplier of cutting-edge clean energies. Although the technological advancements in renewable energy have been breath-taking, two key challenges persist. The first is intermittent generation combined with a lack of battery infrastructure. The Sun does not shine all day, nor does the wind blow throughout it, and so electricity demand is invariably out of sync with the unpredictable supply profile that these technologies provide. This leads to significant waste and to the need to invest in backup, fossil fuel-powered generators to avoid supply disruptions. The second problem is that renewable energies cause voltage and frequency fluctuations, which in turn lead to instability in the electricity grid. The resulting blackouts can be damaging economically, and also constitute a national security threat given the power-intensive and integrated nature of most modern defence systems. As a result of these two difficulties, renewables' installed capacity has not kept pace with the advancement in generation technology. However, a new paper published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology economists Christopher Knittel, Juan Ramon Senga and Shen Wang offers policymakers a way of killing two birds with one stone. The scholars begin by noting that one of the key advantages of data centres is the inherent flexibility of their electricity demand profile. While some baseline processes must occur on a continuous basis throughout the day, a lot of the computationally intensive – and hence electricity-hungry – operations can easily be delayed by a few hours or more without disrupting overall performance. An example would be a large language model such as ChatGPT reading and understanding a voluminous new tranche of material, such as all of the manuscripts in a collection that has recently been digitised. As more renewable energy is integrated into the generation profile, AI data centres can be instructed to synchronise their flexible operations – and hence their electricity demand – with the renewable energy output As long as AI data centres continue to account for a small proportion of electricity consumption, this flexibility will remain inconsequential. However, if – as expected – they transition into being among the biggest sources of energy demand, the flexibility can be exploited to mitigate the intermittency and grid instability problems caused by renewable energy. More specifically, as more renewable energy is integrated into the generation profile, AI data centres can be instructed to synchronise their flexible operations – and hence their electricity demand – with the renewable energy output. This diminishes the likelihood of unconsumed electricity being wasted and decreases the need to invest in expensive battery technologies. Moreover, the voltage and frequency surges that destabilise the grid are likely to decline in incidence. As a result, renewable energies become much more reliable components of the energy mix, and governments can more confidently invest in them without fearing the fragility that has so far limited the transition away from fossil fuels. This solution is by no means a silver bullet. A key weakness is that it depends on a large growth in electricity demand occurring and being matched by a comparable expansion in electricity generation as a prerequisite to shifting the balance towards renewables. However, this challenge will almost certainly be mitigated by complementary technological advancements in other areas, such as battery technology and smart grid management. As a result, Gulf countries can exploit this mechanism as part of a multi-pronged approach to greening their energy mix. In short, the rise of AI and the accompanying expansion of data centres need not be a burden on the GCC's climate ambitions. On the contrary, as policymakers embrace a strategic view of electricity demand management, flexible data centres can become powerful enablers of a greener grid. By aligning the region's digital and environmental transformations, the Gulf can turn a looming challenge into a unique opportunity – advancing both its technological leadership and its commitment to climate responsibility.

International Holding Company (IHC) has delivered a strong first-half performance for 2025, posting revenue of Dh54.7 billion, up 31.1 per cent from Dh41.7 billion a year earlier, and a net profit of Dh10.8 billion. The Abu Dhabi‑based global investment group credited the results to disciplined strategic investments, portfolio strength across multiple sectors, and one of its best‑ever second quarters. Q2 revenue climbed 22.5 per cent year‑on‑year to Dh27.5 billion, while net profit surged 55.3 per cent to Dh6.7 billion, reflecting higher operating leverage and sustained demand across core verticals. Real estate and construction remained the largest revenue contributor, generating Dh22.6 billion in H1, up 47.8 per cent, supported by strong project pipelines and resilient market demand. Marine and dredging operations added Dh14.1 billion, rising 10.8 per cent, while hospitality and leisure nearly doubled turnover to Dh4.9 billion as global travel demand returned strongly. Financial services revenue rose 21.4 per cent to Dh1.8 billion, and energy operations delivered Dh400 million, up 161.3 per cent, highlighting the breadth of IHC's diversification strategy. Earnings per share increased to Dh2.49, with return on equity at 10.8 per cent. Total assets reached Dh436.9 billion as of June 30, 2025, up 8.7 per cent since year‑end 2024. 'Our H1 2025 results reflect the continued strength of IHC's diversified model and the disciplined execution of our strategic investment agenda,' said Syed Basar Shueb, CEO of IHC. 'By delivering outstanding portfolio performance and enhancing operating leverage, we are unlocking value across sectors while deepening our impact in regional and global markets.' The company advanced several major strategic initiatives in the first half. It launched Gridora, a joint venture with ADQ and Modon to deliver strategic infrastructure projects across the UAE and abroad, and unveiled RIQ, an Abu Dhabi Global Market‑based AI‑driven reinsurance platform developed with BlackRock and Lunate, backed by over $1 billion in equity and targeting liabilities exceeding $10 billion. In a push into digital finance, IHC joined ADQ and First Abu Dhabi Bank to pioneer a UAE dirham‑backed stablecoin aimed at enhancing payment systems and blockchain adoption. The group also took a leading role at the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, engaging with policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to promote sustainable investment and global collaboration. M&A activity remained a key growth lever. Multiply Group acquired a controlling 67.91 per cent stake in European fashion retailer Tendam, while IHC took a 69.33 per cent interest in Reem Finance to bolster its financial services footprint. The group also acquired and rebranded SME financing platform eFunder as Zelo, targeting the $250 billion SME credit gap in the UAE with digital invoice financing solutions. Other investments expanded IHC's reach across high‑growth sectors. Modon entered the UK property market with a 50 per cent joint venture in London's 2 Finsbury Avenue development. Al Ain Farms acquired Al Jazira Poultry Farm for Dh255 million, boosting its domestic poultry portfolio. In energy, NMDC Group bought 70 per cent of oilfield services firm Emdad, while Esyasoft purchased UK‑based Good Energy in a Dh453 million deal to strengthen renewable energy and EV mobility capabilities. Healthcare remained a priority growth sector. PureHealth, an IHC subsidiary, completed a landmark $2.3 billion acquisition of a 60 per cent stake in Greece's largest private healthcare provider, Hellenic Healthcare Group, reinforcing its European expansion. The group also increased its logistics footprint through Aldar's acquisition of integrated logistics assets in Almsrkaz from Waha Capital for Dh530 million, adding income‑generating properties across Abu Dhabi, DIP, Jebel Ali, and Dubai South. Shueb emphasised that IHC is shaping 'the industries of tomorrow' by connecting innovative businesses with long‑term capital and operational expertise. 'Our platform is built for scalable and sustainable global relevance,' he said. 'We remain committed to being a catalyst for economic transformation and delivering enduring value to shareholders and stakeholders.'
