The sights and smells of Worcester shopping as it was
Most town centres had a branch and Worcester's was in High Street almost opposite the Guildhall.
Nearby was the slightly less legendary Chung Wah Chinese restaurant.
Having been founded in 1875, FHW's physical presence finally hit the buffers in 1996 and now the Gloucester-based company operates only online.

It's a sign of the times and if you go back 50 years you find that so much has changed on the shopping front.
The rise of the supermarkets being the main thing.
I can easily recall when my parents began making their weekly trip to something called a supermarket in the mid-1960s.
Every Thursday afternoon they would make the car journey from Callow End in dad's two-tone yellow and white Ford Zodiac to a giant food store where you could apparently buy almost everything and cheaper than the village shop.
Their venue of choice was Fine Fare which stood on the corner of the Bull Ring in St John's.
It was probably Worcester's first supermarket and served the west side of the city while there was another branch in The Shambles.
It was the start of a change and a shift from the more leisurely and intimate shopping style that had gone in the decades either side of the Second World War when there was an abundance of grocery and butchers' shops all over the city centre and on many suburb street corners.
These were places of character with their sawdust-lined floors and their distinctive smells.
Although by today's standards they'd probably attract the attention of the health and safety and hygiene police.
The tangy waft of the cheeses would be OK but not so much customers coming eye to eye with a dead rabbit, a row of naked, plucked poultry or half a chopped-up pig.
Post-war there were numerous family-run businesses right in the heart of Worcester.
Witts, the drapery store at 48 High Street, was run by Aubrey and then son Keith Papps, staunch Rotarians both.
When it closed in the 1960s the site was incorporated into an enlarged Littlewoods.
Down in The Shambles, brothers Stan and Arthur Marshall masterminded Maggs, the gentleman's outfitters where hundreds if not thousands of Worcester parents bought their children's school uniforms.
And what a loss it was when Beards in Broad Street closed at the end of the 60s.
A time warp little food emporium, it was noted for its traditional cheeses, the aroma of which drifted down the street meaning you could smell Beards long before you got there.
Worcester's changed a lot now and not necessarily for the better.

Instagram-Famous Retailer Quince Raises Cash at Over $4.5 Billion Value
Quince, the affordable luxury brand that's gone viral on Instagram and TikTok, is raising about $200 million in a new funding round that values the company at more than $4.5 billion, according to people familiar with the deal. Iconiq, an investment firm that manages the fortunes of Silicon Valley billionaires, is leading the funding round, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. The new valuation will more than double the company's previous value — signaling strong investor interest in a retailer that's become known for low-priced basics like sweaters and dresses.

Retail ETFs Pop on EU Deal; MAGS, QQQ Rise Ahead of Earnings
Retail ETFs jumped on Monday as the United States clinched a trade deal with the European Union, setting tariffs at 15%. The deal comes just ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline the White House set for all tariff negotiations, refusing to extend or delay any further. Speaking alongside U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, President Donald Trump explained that going forward, there would be a "global tariff" in the range of 15%-20%. Retail ETFs jumped on the news while broad markets also inched higher before paring gains. XRT Flatlines, VGK Drops The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) rose mildly in early trading Monday before falling by 0.5% midday. The ProShares Online Retail ETF (ONLN) fared much better, jumping nearly 1% before giving back some gains, boosted in part by tech darling Inc. (AMZN). The EU is the largest trading partner to the United States with major imports in the furniture, wine/alcohol, rubber and machinery categories. The $600 billion dollar deal would see the EU increase American energy and defense imports. The Vanguard FTSE Europe ETF (VGK) fell 1.9% as of midday Monday on the news. But despite the White House lauding the trade agreement as a "landmark deal," investors have set their sights on earnings and an upcoming Fed decision. MAGS Jumps Ahead of Major Tech Earnings Four members of the "Magnificent Seven"—Meta Platforms Inc. (META), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Apple Inc. (AAPL) and AMZN—are set to report quarterly earnings this week, turning investor interest to the tech sector. Markets are set to pay close attention to any news about artificial intelligence and investments into AI tech and strategies. The Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (MAGS) jumped Monday as investors were more attracted to risk ahead of earnings. The Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), which mirrors the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 index, also notched gains. Last week, Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL) beat earnings expectations and raised spending forecasts. But Mag 7 member Tesla Inc. (TSLA) disappointed, pointing to slumping revenue and tougher margins. Tesla CEO Elon Musk told investors to brace for some rough quarters in the future. Fed Expected to Hold Rates Steady Rounding out a busy week ahead, the Federal Reserve is set to meet this week and make a decision on rates. According to the CME FedWatch Tool markets are pricing a 97% chance that the Fed will hold rates steady. A rate cut is largely not expected until the fall at the September FOMC meeting. Tariff concerns have continued to weigh on the central bank, which is currently walking a tightrope between economic stimulus and reigning in inflation. The impact of tariffs has yet to appear in inflation reports, causing the Fed to hold its course. During testimony last month in front of the House Financial Services Committee, Fed Chair Jerome Powell confirmed that the Fed would have cut rates by now were it not for tariffs. Bond yields rose Monday in advance of the Fed meeting, sending Treasury bond prices lower. Yields and prices move in opposite directions.
