Comedy legend Ruth Buzzi dies after Alzheimer's and stroke
Ruth Buzzi has sadly passed away at the age of 88 after living with Alzheimer's since 2012 and suffering a severe stroke in 2022 that left her disabled. The star was undoubtedly a standout figure of 70s television.
The news of her passing was confirmed in a heartfelt post shared to her official Facebook page, that announced that she had died on Monday in Texas. Her stroke had left her in hospice care up to her death.
A message from the comedy icon's family on Facebook said: 'Ruthie left us while peacefully sleeping yesterday evening at home. She'd been in hospice care, disabled from a stroke in 2022 following a diagnosis of Alzheimer's ten years earlier."
The actor was well loved for her sharp wit and unforgettable characters, and she made her biggest mark on the small screen in the ground-breaking NBC sketch comedy series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, which ran from 1968 to 1973, reported The Mirror.
Buzzi's electric performances earned the star a Golden Globe and five Emmy nominations during her time on the show, where she starred alongside future Hollywood legend Goldie Hawn, who was supposed to appear on Celebrity Big Brother this year but pulled out last minute.
As well as gracing Laugh-In with her scene-stealing comedic talent, Ruth brought her voice to a wide range of popular series, including Days of Our Lives, The Carol Burnett Show, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Berenstain Bears, The Pink Panther, and the classic 1976 family film Freaky Friday.
Her journey to comedy stardom began in the most classic of ways - out on the road. Born on July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island, she first stepped into the spotlight at 19-years-old, touring with crooner Rudy Vallee during a college summer break.
Getting a taste of the stage solidified the future comic's dreams, and after finishing school, she packed up for New York City. There, she quickly landed a leading role in an off-Broadway musical revue - the first of nearly 20 she would perform in across the East Coast.
Her TV break came in 1964 when she joined The Garry Moore Show, followed by a spot on The Entertainers in 1965.
Ruth Buzzi's undeniably quirky charm soon caught the eye of casting directors, landing her recurring parts in shows like That Girl and The Monkees, with additional guest spots on Night Gallery and Here's Lucy.
But Laugh-In saw her real breakthrough in 1968, when she joined the comedy ensemble for its full run.
Reflecting on the experience, Buzzi once said, 'We laughed, and laughed, and laughed. It never even felt like I was going to work. It was pure spontaneous fun.'
She stayed with Laugh-In for its full six-season run, creating an unforgettable roster of eccentric characters - from the feisty Gladys Ormphby to the tipsy Doris Swizzler.
After Laugh-In, she continued her comedic legacy through shows like The Lost Saucer, Whatever Turns You On, and voice roles in animated classics like Alvin and the Chipmunks and The Berenstain Bears.

The former This Morning producer, who has been married to Fiona for 28 years, opened up on the heartbreaking reality of her health decline. Fiona was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's in 2022 but didn't publicly share her diagnosis until 2023. Both of her parents and her uncle also had the brain disease, which still stands as the most common form of dementia across the UK. It has remained the nation's primary cause of death for a decade, making it a deeply personal pain for Martin as he witnesses his wife of nearly three decades battling the condition. "I used to say good days and bad days, now I just say bad days or wretched days, I think wretched is a great word for it," he revealed during a recent BBC Newsnight interview, as reported by the Mirror. He also shared how the illness has impacted his wife, as he continued: "In the cab ride, 35 minutes, she asked me 72 times, where are we going?'" It comes following a recent interview when Martin gave an update on Fiona's health, in a heartbreaking revelation that she often doesn't recognise him as her husband. He admitted that she once believed she was being kidnapped, unaware of who he was. The former TV star has been opening up about his wife's condition prior to the release of their upcoming joint autobiography, Remember When: My Life with Alzheimer's. Speaking to Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary on This Morning, he revealed: "In the book there's a photo of her looking great and smiling but what you don't know is she thought I kidnapped her." Candidly discussing the heartbreaking nature of the illness, Martin explained Fiona often asks to 'go home' to her mum and dad, heartbreakingly unaware they have passed away. "She does recognise me most of the time - she doesn't quite know I'm her husband - but she knows who I am. Every now and then she'll want to go home to her parents and I haven't the heart to say 'they aren't here'," Martin explained. Fiona, 64, originally believed she was experiencing menopausal changes when she began suffering from "brain fog and anxiety". The mum-of-two later received the same tragic diagnosis of both her own parents, having previously cared for them herself. Martin, who presented This Morning for a decade, quit his role in February to look after Fiona. In extracts from their book featured in the Daily Mail, he described his wife's current needs. "It is January 2025 as I write this, and Fiona needs a lot of help," Martin stated. "She needs help showering and brushing her teeth. She can do these things physically, but is unable now to think about how she should do them... "I wash Fiona's hair because she wouldn't know what shampoo or conditioner to use or how wet her hair needs to be or that she must rinse the soap suds out afterwards. And most nights I'll say, 'Right, we need to brush our teeth before we go to bed,' and I'll put the toothpaste on the brush and hand it to her." While Fiona is capable of dressing herself, Martin pointed out that she doesn't always get it "correctly" and may wear items inside out. He also shared that she grows attached to certain clothes, preferring to wear them repeatedly.

The group started off their string of gigs in Cardiff before moving on to Heaton Park in Manchester. And now, they're prepping for a number of sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium in London. While on tour, Liam has been spending some quality time with his mum, Peggy, who is excited to see her sons on stage. Her other son, Paul Gallagher, will also be doing a DJ set before Oasis takes to the stage. "Liam is incredibly close to Peggy and has loved spending time with her during the tour," a source recently said to The Sun. 'She is really looking forward to seeing all three of her boys on stage at Wembley." The source went on to say Liam has been 'putting his head down' and 'focusing on the tour'. The Mirror have contacted Oasis' reps for comment. It comes after Peggy was forced to miss their gigs at Heaton Park. She previously spoken about planning to see them on the Oasis Live 25 tour and still lives in Manchester, where she brought up her three sons in Burnage. The Mirror understood that she couldn't see them at Heaton Park due issues with her health and Heaton Park being a standing venue. An Oasis source said at the time: 'Peggy is really keen to go and see Oasis again and couldn't be more proud reading about the shows in Cardiff and Manchester. "But her health comes first and Liam and Noel want her to be comfortable if she does come to see the band. She had a recent knee operation so needs a comfortable spot if she is going to go to one of the shows and be there for a few hours. 'They'll both be spending time with her whilst they are in Manchester but they'll hold off getting her to a show. 'Somewhere like Dublin or Wembley is a more likely venue where she can be treated like a queen with any food she wants and there is better access and transport options.' After the Manchester gigs, the band will play Wembley as well as dates in Edinburgh and Croke Park in Dublin. The band will then embark on a world tour.

A young graduate has shared how much she recently had to fork out for her long-awaited graduation day - and it's left people gobsmacked at the 'hidden' costs there are A recent graduate has revealed the eye-watering cost of her graduation and shared the 'hidden' charges no one tells you about. Faith Gloria graduated from Bristol University recently, and managed to spend £640 on the big day. Graduation day is the biggest thing on most students minds, when all their hard work comes to an end, and ready to start their new chapter. But many are alarmed at the costs that come with getting that long-awaited certificate. Faith said not many people openly talk about how expensive graduations can be, but noted it's "personal" how much you choose to spend. She took to TikTok in a recent video, where she detailed how she worked part time all throughout her time at university and said she was "privileged" to have a job as it can be "so hard to get one". Speaking about the costs, the recent graduate said: "My biggest expense by far was my dress. It was £216." Faith said she had purchased it in her second year and revealed the reason she was "so comfortable spending that amount of money is because I love the colour, I love the fit, I love the cut, I know it's very versatile." She then noted her second biggest expense was the hotel, which cost £145 for one night in her university city and then in third were her nails. Faith showed off her intricately manicured nails which set her back £85 and confessed: "I wouldn't spend that much again unless it's a very special occasion. Then Faith detailed how she forked out £43 for new shoes, £59 for new hair that included "synthetic extensions and also the human hair parts," but did do her hair herself. Also paying for food for the day before and on the bog day, she spent £30, but said she didn't have to pay for her graduation dinner. "Next up was beauty, I picked up a couple of bits which came to around £34 and transport to and from and around Bristol was £35." Faith said these costs didn't even include the cap and gown hire or the professional photos and said" I'm very lucky I didn't pay for" otherwise it would have been added to her eyewatering £645 bill she'd already sent. However one graduate took to the comments to claim she spent even more and said: "I graduated from Bristol, too... £300 outfit, £200 shoes, £90 for mani-pedi, £40 for the hair, £45 for the gown... and my bag (that was my gift to myself) cost me £2,000.." Cap and gowns are the biggest non-negotiable on graduation days, but it depends on how much you spend. Every student is required to hire a gown and cap, which can set you back £75 to £100, depending on your degree level and buying the set outright could cost £160+. Photos also come at a staggering cost - and every student will want a photo of the day. Official photo packages can cost up to £80 for just three shots.
