Now, the harbour city is often named one of the best places to live, most recently in 2023 by The Times, and happiest places to live by The Guardian earlier this year.
The main attraction is the 900-year-old Chichester Cathedral, the only medieval cathedral in England that can be seen from the sea.
There is also Fishbourne Roman Palace, the biggest Roman houses in the UK, as well as the open-air Weald and Download Living Museum.
Yet thousands of car enthusiasts visit the city every year to go to Goodwood Festival of Speed, an annual motoring festival.
Taking place from July 10-13, this year it celebrates 75 years of the F1 Championship and 125 years of motorsport history.
Here is everything you need to know about it.
And new this month is The Nest, a new theatre venue with live shows all throughout the summer
But if you want some beach time, one of the nearest is West Wittering Beach, often named one of the best in the UK.
Bognor Regis is also just as close, if you wanted somewhere slightly busier.
To get there, the city has its own Chichester Railway Station that has direct trains to London Victoria taking around 90 minutes.

Trains also operate to Gatwick Airport, as well as Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton.
While you can opt for a budget-friendly Premier Inn or Travelodge, there is also the fancy Grade-II listed Harbour Hotel
Also in Chichester is Bosham, a tiny village compared to Venice which is home to England's best B&B.
It is even in the famous Bayeux Tapestry, as it was where King Harold lived.
One local SussexLive: "It looks completely unspoiled […] like an old fishing village you might find in Devon or Cornwall. It's still very quaint and old-fashioned."
Or there is Concierge Camping, a five-star camping ground in Chichester named one of the best in the UK that even is compared to a fancy hotel.
We've also rounded up the best things to do in Sussex.

The driver is believed to have veered off the winding road before the bus plummeted down the ravine, authorities said on Friday. Officials said 15 of the 60 passengers onboard were found dead at the scene. Three more victims then died after being rushed to hospital. Two children are among the dead, a spokesperson for health services of the central city of Tarma said. The double-decker belonged to the company Expreso Molina Lder Internacional. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident. Wreckage pictures show how the bus split in two after landing on its side with shattered glass and snapped window frames spread across the crash site. Peru has a dark history of deadly bus crashes. At least 40 killed as two buses crash and burst into flames – leaving terrified passengers trapped inside vehicles In September of last year, dozens of tourists were injured after a bus carrying them back from Machu Picchu plunged down a steep bank. The bus fell 50 feet after the driver lost control of the motor while he negotiated the narrow mountain road in the foggy Andes. In 2022, four tourists were killed and another 15 were injured after a minibus plunged 330 feet down a cliff returning from Machu Picchu. Locals said foggy conditions also contributed to that crash. Accidents are common in Peru due to speeding, poor road surfaces, and a lack of road signs. Over 3,170 people died in road accidents in the country in 2024, according to Peruvian police data.

On Universal Credit? How you can save £100s on your summer phone bill

Check below to see if you can save TO YOUR BENEFIT On Universal Credit? How you can save £100s on your summer phone bill Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HEADING off for some summer sun should be a relaxing break, not a source of bill-shock. But with many major mobile networks reintroducing expensive daily roaming charges for using your phone in Europe, the cost of a simple holiday can quickly spiral. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 If you're receiving Universal Credit or other benefits, you could be eligible for a special 'social tariff' Credit: Getty For a family of four, a two-week trip could add £100s in roaming fees alone. However, a little-known secret could save you a fortune. If you're receiving Universal Credit or other benefits, you could be eligible for a special 'social tariff' on your mobile plan, slashing your monthly costs and letting you use your phone abroad for free. These 'social' or 'essential' tariffs offer the same service as regular packages but at a significantly lower price. They typically come with no long-term contracts, a guarantee of no mid-contract price hikes, and two of the three providers even include free roaming in Europe. For example, O2's Essential Plan costs just £10 a month and gives you 10GB of data with unlimited calls and texts. Crucially, you can use up to 10GB of that data in the EU at no extra cost. The plan is a flexible 30-day deal, with no upfront costs or price rises. Meanwhile, SMARTY's Social Tariff provides unlimited data, calls, and texts for £12 a month. For holidaymakers, it includes EU roaming with a generous 12GB data cap. Easy ways to slash your mobile bill Like O2's offer, it's a flexible one-month plan with no annual price rises. Choosing one of these tariffs means you can avoid the daily roaming charges now levied by most major networks since Brexit. Many providers, including EE, Three, and Vodafone, may charge around £2 to £2.57 per day to use your UK allowance in Europe. That could add up to £35 to your bill for a two-week holiday. Providers like EE and Voxi also offer social tariffs, but be aware that their roaming policies may include extra charges. To apply, simply contact your chosen provider. They will ask for some basic information and carry out a quick, confidential check with the Department for Work and Pensions to confirm your eligibility before setting up your plan. The regulator, Ofcom, provides a comprehensive list of all the available social tariffs on its website. Before switching mobile plans, check if you're still in contract to avoid high exit fees. Over 33million people are out of contract, according to Uswitch, so it's worth checking if you can upgrade or switch to avoid paying more than necessary. To check your contract status, text "INFO" followed by your date of birth (DDMMYY) to 85075. You'll get a text confirming if you'd need to pay an early termination fee. These fees only apply if you're still in contract. If no fee is mentioned, you're likely out of contract and free to switch.

Millions of people make journeys on that hectic weekend, with that first Friday being nicknamed 'Frantic Friday' because of the road chaos caused by the huge number of trips. However, this holiday weekend is expected to be even busier with a staggering 2.7 million people hitting the roads yesterday. Today, that number is expected to skyrocket to 3 million in what the RAC has described as a "Saturday scramble". Read More on Travel News PASS IT ON All the passport rules you NEED to know to stop your holidays being ruined The huge surge in the number of drivers had led to massive queues across the country, not least at the Port of Dover. Thousands of Brits are stuck at the transport terminal, in mammoth queues which can be seen stretching into the distance. Even rows of lorries can be seen waiting to check-in at the terminals, as the queues continue to build. The chaos at the Port of Dover has continued throughout the week, after an estimated 13.9 million people hit the roads between July 21 and July 25. On Thursday, the queues became so big that drivers exited their cars and waited by the side of the road - despite warnings that this was unsafe. Doug Bannister, chief executive at the Port of Dover, has previously said that the organisation has been 'preparing for a busy summer'. Vehicles pile up at Dover for Bank Holiday weekend getaways He said: 'We know how vital it is to keep things moving, not just for holidaymakers but for our local community too. 'That's why we've boosted staff levels, strengthened traffic management, added welfare facilities and introduced AI-powered forecasting - all to minimise disruption and ensure both residents and travellers have the best possible experience during this busy season.' The Port is expecting a massive number of users over the weekend, with the estimated number of drivers expected to be as high as 40,000. Over the next six weeks, the Port of Dover expects 270,000 drivers. As one of the most popular ways of reaching France and the rest of continental Europe, the port welcomes thousands of ships a year. The busy port has undergone a huge renovation in recent months, which reportedly cost a £6 billion. Previously only able to accommodate ships with a maximum length of 320m, it can now allow boats of up to 350m to moor at Dover. 5 Thousands of people are still waiting at Dover Credit: PA
