A ROMAN city in the UK is often named one of the best places to live in the country and its really easy to get to.
The city of Chichester is the only city in West Sussex, and once was a huge Roman market town with baths and amphitheaters.

Now, the harbour city is often named one of the best places to live, most recently in 2023 by The Times, and happiest places to live by The Guardian earlier this year.
The main attraction is the 900-year-old Chichester Cathedral, the only medieval cathedral in England that can be seen from the sea.
There is also Fishbourne Roman Palace, the biggest Roman houses in the UK, as well as the open-air Weald and Download Living Museum.
Yet thousands of car enthusiasts visit the city every year to go to Goodwood Festival of Speed, an annual motoring festival.
Taking place from July 10-13, this year it celebrates 75 years of the F1 Championship and 125 years of motorsport history.

But if you want some beach time, one of the nearest is West Wittering Beach, often named one of the best in the UK.
Bognor Regis is also just as close, if you wanted somewhere slightly busier.
To get there, the city has its own Chichester Railway Station that has direct trains to London Victoria taking around 90 minutes.

Trains also operate to Gatwick Airport, as well as Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton.
While you can opt for a budget-friendly Premier Inn or Travelodge, there is also the fancy Grade-II listed Harbour Hotel
Also in Chichester is Bosham, a tiny village compared to Venice which is home to England's best B&B.
It is even in the famous Bayeux Tapestry, as it was where King Harold lived.

Especially if you remember walking through green woodland packed with ferns, moss and lichen - with a really memorable earthy, damp scent. They once covered more than 20 per cent of the UK - but history devoured them - and now there's less than one per cent. So the Wildlife Trust, sponsored by Aviva, has just launched an epic 100-year restoration project to bring them back. The temperate rainforest restoration programme will restore approximately 1,755 hectares of temperate rainforest across the British Isles. Some of the new sites created through this programme include Bowden Pillars in Devon, Bryn Ifan in North Wales, Creg y Cowin and Glion Darragh on the Isle of Man, Trellwyn Fach in Pembrokeshire, and – most recently - Skiddaw in Cumbria. Garden Designer Zoe Claymore, won a silver gilt medal at RHS Chelsea for her British Rainforest Garden. She told me: 'I didn't know it at the time - but I played in a British rainforest as a child. The end of my grandparents garden in Devon went into Lidford Gorge which is one of the last existing rainforests. 'In the UK they're found in the Goldilocks zone - not too hot, not too cold - and by rivers, gullies and gorges, because you also need the moisture from the river creating that ecosystem.' But there are ways of recreating one in your own garden, she said. 'Even if you don't live in an area suited to creating a rainforest there's other plants that will create the same vibes. Mums are raving about an indoor tropical rainforest attraction in the UK 'Create shade with Hazels - they're a great small tree which gives a real native-feel and perfect for small gardens. Or include hollies, birch or willows. 'Create a water feature - from a little stream with a few rocks or simply as an old-school rock water bowl - to create that sense of humidity. "But even if you just did a pond in a pot surrounded by some fun little logs, that will create habitat, that will bring wildlife, and it will create that kind of feeling of rainforest-y wetness." It's easy to make a home made pond - using old washing up bowls. Tesco's are currently selling one for just £2.75. First choose a spot that's sunny but not in direct sunlight all day - otherwise the water will evaporate. Then all you have to do is put some logs around it, and a few stones, so wildlife can climb in and out easily - almost like a ramp. Ideally fill it with rain water rather than tap. And then put in about three water plants - like mini water lillies or water forget-me-not and sit back waiting for the wildlife. Zoe added: 'Then use British classic woodland plants and really focus on ferns - the unsung beautiful heroes of shade gardening - as well as bluebells, foxgloves, primulars, ivy, bananas and - if you've got a wet area - moss - which is the jewel in the crown - so your garden will be green all year round." Beautiful island worth £25m just 39 miles from UK's 'worst seaside town'
Boasting more than 500 acres of rustic gardens orchards, meadows, and salt marsh - and five miles of soft golden sand - you wouldn't expect this breathtakingly beautiful island to be in the UK A stunning island with five miles of soft golden sand feels worlds apart from its infamous neighbour. Situated on the idyllic Blackwater Estuary, and surrounded by some 550 acres of rustic gardens, orchards, meadows, and salt marsh - lies the enchanting isle of Osea. With secluded beaches and huge mansions, you'd expect to find a retreat this tranquil in the iconic Hamptons, or on a remote archipelago in the Caribbean. Instead, Osea Island (formerly known as Osey) is in Essex, and is located less than 40 miles from Clacton-on-Sea, a 'rundown' seaside town often ranked one of the worst in the country. In the words of Tatler Magazine, it 'feels more Martha's Vineyard than East Anglia'. You can even hire out the entire island for private events, making it a magnet for celebs. In fact, it is reported Rihanna, Jude Law, Stormzy, and Daniel Radcliffe have all stayed at the island in the past - whether it be for filming locations, inspiration to write music, or a much-needed escape from reality. Last year, the island and all of its 38 residential properties, unexpectedly went up for sale - with a guide price of £25 million. However, the listing was later removed from Right Move. "The island is rich in history with evidence from the Viking, Norman and Roman eras and has connections with the brewing family Charrington (c.1903) and, during WWI, it was a secret naval base named 'SS Osea' and also referenced in WWII," said estate agents Fine & Country. "Today the island offers unique beauty in a natural habitat combined with the recent celebrity and business ventures." Luckily, tourists can still stay on Osea Island - but spending the night won't come cheap. For example, a two-night stay (Wednesday, July 30 - August 1) at the Captain's House, which features seven double bedrooms, two twin bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and extensive gardens that lead down to the beach, will set you back a whopping £5,980. If you're a group of 20 friends, this works out at around £300 per person. There are less grand properties on the island, such as Manor Beach 2. This luxury cottage sleeps up to four people, consisting of two double bedroom suites, a wood-burning stove, a kitchen and a dining area. Staying here on the exact same nights costs £960, which equals £240 per person.
