With aim to facilitate sustainable industry-academia partnerships, IIT Gandhinagar organises ORBIT
The first edition of ORBIT (Outreach, Research, Breakthrough, Innovation, and Technology) discussed industry-academia collaboration avenues, funding mechanisms, and regulatory challenges in the biomedical engineering domain. Additionally, the need for support, policy pipelines, structural changes to tackle challenges in testing, productisation, infrastructure access, and sustainable partnerships was also deliberated upon.
Prof Amit Prashant, Dean, Research and Development, highlighted the need to 'bridge the timeline and communication gap between academia and industry', and to build partnerships on the foundation of trust.
IITGN faculty and stakeholders from the Institute's Research Park, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, Industry Connect, and Career Development Cell interacted with the representatives from MSMEs, pharma companies, and startups. As they exchanged ideas and spoke of their experiences, the participants shared the need for pipelines and policies that would boost productisation, patenting, and translational activities. Additionally, several problem statements were put forth by companies like Zydus Lifesciences, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, Biotech Vision Care, Axio Biosolutions, IOTA Diagnostic, Salvo India, Spotdot Bioinnovations, and others.
Speaking of the opportunities provided by the state government, Dr Anand N Bhadalkar, Director, Savli Technology and Business Incubator (STBI), emphasised the role of the organisation in offering comprehensive support to early-stage startups in the life sciences and healthcare sectors. He mentioned how STBI co-develops grant proposals with funding organisations, launches joint projects and co-incubation efforts with academic partners like IITGN, and provides incubation space, testing facilities, mentorship, and Intellectual Property (IP), and licensing support to startups.
The event also highlighted IITGN's latest industry ready programmes, including a six-month credited internship for final-year undergraduates and several Executive Masters degree programmes in areas of emerging technologies. The conclave concluded with a visit to the Research Park.
'ORBIT reaffirmed that innovation in biomedical engineering thrives when academia and industry engage as equal partners,' said Prof Soumyadip Sett, Faculty in-charge, Industry Connect, IITGN.
The next edition of ORBIT is scheduled to be held in September and will focus on Electric Vehicles.

Annual garment exports from Tiruppur, Coimbatore touches ₹45,000 crore
Annual garment exports from Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts in 2024-25 financial year touched ₹45,000 crore, according to data available with the Tiruppur Exporters' Association (TEA). TEA president K.M. Subramanian told The Hindu on Thursday that direct garment exports from Tiruppur were almost ₹40,000 crore and that from Coimbatore district were worth ₹5,000 crore. This was 20% higher than the previous year. 'This year, we expect 15 % growth and the exports will be close to ₹46,000 crores,' he said. Apart from this, there are garments exported indirectly (merchant exports). Though there is no definite data available, it is estimated to be almost ₹5,000 crore. The garment exporting units are currently operating at 90% capacity and there is an urgent need for capacity addition. The government should come out with a scheme to support investments, especially towards modernisation. 'In the last five years, there is a lot of technology advancements. The industry should modernise. There is a shortage of labour in Tiruppur and hence the units need to automate. They need support to boost investments,' Mr. Subramanian added. Industry sources added that while the supply chain for the garment exporters was doing well, the Micro, Small and Medium-scale Enterprises (MSMEs) supply for the domestic garment units had taken a hit. Knitted fabric, especially of man-made fibres, that was imported was available at ₹180 to ₹200 a kg, which was almost half the price of fabric produced in Tiruppur. Hence, the unorganised sector was consuming huge quantities of imported fabric, affecting the local knitting units. The sources added that currently Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts accounted for 68% of the country's knitted garment exports. With the free trade agreement with the UK and agreements on the anvil with the US and the European Union, garment exports from these two districts were expected to get a boost.

CII President bats for DFI-style fund to ease MSME credit woes
Live Events The collateral and documentation issues are significant challenges for MSME finance and need a faster resolution, said Rajiv Memani, President, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), on to a question by ET Digital on credit availability, Memani proposed an idea to create a Development Finance Institution (DFI)-style fund for MSMEs that could alleviate credit issues, providing essential funding and support for small the uninitiated, Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) provide funding and support for projects that drive economic development. 'I think SIDBI has played a crucial role in mitigating risk and facilitating credit access for MSMEs by absorbing the initial risk, which enables banks to lend further. As a result, MSME credit growth is now gaining momentum,' he his first press conference after taking over as the CII president, Memani emphasised the need to ease compliance and regulatory burdens on MSMEs to foster their growth. 'The central government, I think, is not happy with the underutilisation of the National Single Window System ,' said Memani. The CII is advocating for uniformity between central and state-level single window clearances, he Memani proposed policy measures to boost India's manufacturing ecosystem, including scaling up MSME financing and introducing a ' Capital Support Scheme for MSMEs' for projects with investments between Rs 50 crore and Rs 1,000 suggested providing direct support to MSMEs in the form of an interest-free loan, covering 50% of the capital investment, repayable in 5 equal instalments after a 10-year period. Additionally, he proposed launching a fund similar to the Self-Reliant Fund (SRI) to support hi-tech manufacturing there are over 63.38 million MSMEs in India. In 2023-24, MSME-related products accounted for 45.73% of India's total exports, reinforcing their role in positioning the country as a global manufacturing to government data, MSME exports have witnessed robust growth, rising from Rs 3.95 lakh crore in the financial year 2020-21 to Rs 12.39 lakh crore in the financial year 2024-25. The number of MSME exporters has also seen a significant increase, expanding from 52,849 in 2020-21 to 1,73,350 in new initiatives include CII MSME Export Helpdesk to resolve export queries and connect MSMEs with buyers and a Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive digital transformation among MSMEs and promote Responsible AI also focused on the need to raise awareness about available land for MSMEs and seek a longer transition period for MSMEs to comply with the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) under Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Memani said that the Indian economy is projected to grow between 6.4% to 6.7% in the current financial year, driven by robust domestic demand, even as geopolitical uncertainty poses downside risks. He highlighted that growth risks are evenly balanced, with "geopolitical uncertainty" posing a downside risk and "strong domestic demand" serving as a positive factor.
