A volcano in Russia's remote Kamchatka region has erupted for the first time in 450 years, just days after one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded rocked the area. The Krasheninnikov volcano sent a massive plume of ash 6,000 metres into the sky, triggering aviation alerts and raising fears of further seismic activity. Now, a new magnitude 6.7 quake has hit Russia's Kuril Islands, according to German and Pacific seismic authorities. Though no tsunami warning was issued, the tremors have raised fresh concerns about escalating geological instability in the Pacific Ring of Fire.

A former assistant to a far-right member of the European Parliament has gone on trial accused of spying for China. Jian G worked in the parliamentary office of Maximilian Krah, a member of the Alternative for (AfD) party, who sat in the European Parliament between 2019 and 2025. Prosecutors claim Mr G, whose full name has not been released in line with Germany's privacy laws, had been working for a Chinese secret service since 2002. The German national is accused of gathering intelligence and confidential documents to pass on to Chinese officials while working for Mr Krah between September 2019 and April 2024. A second defendant, Chinese national Jaqi X, is accused of assisting him, having worked for a logistics company at Leipzig Airport, where she is alleged to have provided data on the transportation of defence goods, flights, freight, and passengers. Beijing has denied accusations of espionage in Europe. The Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately respond on Tuesday to a Reuters request for comment on the German case. Elizaveta Krivonogikh is rumoured to be the illegetimate daughter of Vladimir Putin and his former cleaner Svetlana Krivonogikh. Born in St Petersburg in 2003, she had largely kept her lavish life documented in social media but went silent following the Russia-Ukraine war, according to The Times. She first came into the limelight when Russian investigative outlet Proekt claimed that Elizaveta Krivonogikh after probing the wealth of Svetlana. The report also claimed that she had a stark similarity to Putin in terms of looks. Elizaveta is reported to have graduated in 2024 from ICART, an institution in Paris that specialises in arts and cultural management. According to a report by The Economic Times, she works under the name Elizaveta Rudnova at L Galerie in Belleville and Espace Albatros in Montreuil. Elizaveta's mother Svetlana reportedly rose from being a cleaner at St Petersburg to becoming a major shareholder in key Russian businesses. She was sanctioned by the UK government in 2023 due to her alleged ties in the inner circle of Putin.
