East tennis teams surpass expectations
Mission accomplished and a bit more besides has to be the verdict on the East women and men's tennis teams after another Summer County Cup brought together teams from up and down the UK. East women surpassed themselves as a side promoted the previous year by climbing higher up the scale into Division Two for 2026. As for the men it was no secret that they could struggle into Division One shorn of several key players but the squad dug deep and not only finished third but could have actually taken the title on the final day had Surrey opponents not proved too strong. So, with wins over North Wales, Essex, Norfolk and Lincolnshire the East women go up again, their only defeat this year coming against Warwickshire on the Cheltenham courts. Leading performers were Mhairi Beattie (10 sets won out of 13 played), Hanna Augustynska (9-11) and Sarah McFadyen (9-14). Key was winning a series of tight matches by five ties to four. Victories over North Scotland, Northamptonshire and South Wales while losing to Warwickshire and Surrey meant the men will return to Division One next year and if American based pro's Jake Fearnley and Matt Rankin were to become available that would boost their chances hugely. Top individual performers on the Eastbourne grass were James MacKinlay (12-15) and Scott Duncan (11-15). The East women's squad is pictured aas, back row, left to right – Mhairi BeBeattie, Eva Vrhunec, Heather Croll, Shaylin Holt. Front – Hanna Augustynska, Aaadya, Iyer Chadalawada, Ama Nisbet. Men – left to right – Jamie Hunter, Lance Nisbet, James MacKinlay, Euan McIntosh, Rhys Watters, Sam MacNeil,Scott Duncan. Absent – Alan Macdonald. Like this: Like Related

Who is Michelle Agyemang? England and Arsenal striker who took Lionesses to Euro 2025 final
"SOMETHING special" were the words England boss Sarina Wiegman used to describe Michelle Agyemang after the Lionesses' Euros quarter-final. Not once, but twice this tournament, Agyemang has brought England back from the brink and kept a nation's hopes alive. What's crazy is that before 2025, the 19-year-old was an unknown player, but after her appearances in the Euros 2025, it is safe to say Agyemang has made herself a household name. Who is Michelle Agyemang? She was born in Essex on February 3 2006. She is a die-hard Arsenal supporter, and experiences a clash of loyalties at home with her football-obsessed family, as her father supports Manchester United, her brother Chelsea and her sister West Ham. 5 When she is not producing exceptional levels of football with the Lionesses, Agyemang is also enrolled at King's College London as a business management student. While the centre-forward is born and bred in South Ockenden, she is of Ghanaian descent, with her surname "Agyemang" meaning "saviour of the nation". Talk about living up to a name! How many times has she played for England? At only 19, she is the youngest player in England boss Sarina Wiegman's squad this tournament. She has played for the Lionesses only four times. And yet, only on her fourth cap for the side, she has not let her age hold her back. The new Lionesses set to make their mark at the Women's Euro's as England kick off their title defence against France In Tuesday night's semi-final, England were nail-bitingly close to crashing out of the competition at the hands of Italy. It was not until the 96th minute that England equalised, as Agyemang drilled the ball past the goalkeeper with a composed finish that contradicted her years. 5 What's even more impressive is that she had only been on the pitch for 11 minutes. But it's not the first time Agyemang has brought England from the precipice of failure, rescuing the Lionesses with another crucial goal (again after only 11 minutes on the pitch) to equalise against Sweden. The young Brit, has embodied Wiegman's"finisher" rather than "substitute" mentality, and has done so ever since her senior debut. She caught the eyes of Lioness fans when she made her debut for England in April this year, netting an astonishing volley after only 41 seconds on the pitch. 5 Agyemang has impressed at all stages of national football, making 25 appearances for England from under-16 to under-23 level, netting 10 goals in 12 appearances for the under-17s and advancing to the under-19s. Not bad for a player who only four years ago was a ball girl for the Lionesses at Wembley... What club team does she play for? Since her father landed her a trial with Arsenal at six years old, Agyemang has risen through the ranks. 5 Agyemang worked her way up Arsenal's age categories to reach the first team in 2022. Agyemang made her Arsenal senior debut at 16 years old in a 4-0 victory over Leicester City in the Women's Super League. While contracted to Arsenal, she joined Watford on a dual-signing agreement in 2023 and then joined Brighton & Hove Albion on loan for the 2024-5 season. At Watford, Agyemang scored five goals in 10 appearances in the second half of the 2023-4 Women's Championship campaign, before netting another five for Brighton. It's safe to say, this is not the last we've heard of superstar Michelle Agyemang.

She always wanted to do more, always worked really hard." Ms Smith was working for Leyton Orient on Tuesday when England beat Italy to book a place in Sunday's Euros final against Spain, and admitted she struggled to focus on work."I had my laptop up in the gantry and I let out an almighty scream."I probably ran the whole length of a stand when she scored that goal." "I'm not surprised at all to see her do as well as she's done... she's just got something about her. It's hard to explain," she continued."You just want to nurture that talent and you want to make sure she goes and plays on the best stages and that's exactly what she's doing and she's taking everything in her stride."She's come from a little place in Essex, so it does make you really proud, just knowing that people will grow up one day... little girls saying they want to go and play like Michelle Agyemang."It's incredible, it's what every coach wants. She is a coach's dream." Ms Smith said role models in the women's game were inspiring youngsters to follow in their footsteps."Instead of people saying, 'Oh, I want to go and score a goal like Rooney or Gerrard', now they're talking about Ellen White, Beth Mead and Alessia Russo."It's incredible and it just makes me really proud."
