New Delhi: Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a lot of players being bought on the promise of talent but none was better than a choice Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made ahead of IPL 2021 auction. They bought a player from Punjab Kings (then KXIP) for INR 9.25 crore (US$ 1,273,000 approx.) but never played him in the season.
Moreover, CSK won the title in IPL 2021 and the player – Krishnappa Gotham – went on to win the title without breaking a sweat and pocketing all the money. Before he won with CSK, he already had a title to his name with Mumbai Indians in 2017 – that too without playing for them in the season. Isn't Krishnappa Gowtham the quirkiest buy of the IPL history? Let's have a look at his journey:
Gowtham is only one of the 10 players to win a title with both MI (2017) and CSK (2021) but the only player to do so without playing a single game for any of the franchise. He even played for India in one off ODI in July 2021 against Sri Lanka and that remains his only international appearance.
It was with Rajasthan Royals in 2018 that Gowtham caught limelight of Shane Warne – Royals skipper during 2008 IPL title win. He played full season with RR in IPL 2018 and took 11 wickets – showing promise. He also took the team to win against MI with 11 ball 33 not out in a crunch game.
Krishnappa Gowtham's IPL career has been full of ups and downs. In the year 2018, he played the most 15 matches and scored 126 runs, with his highest score being 33* and his strike rate being 196.87. After this, in 2019, he scored 18 runs in 7 matches, while in 2020 he scored 42 runs while playing in just 2 matches, with 22* being his best score and an average of 42.00. In the year 2022, Gowtham got 4 matches but he could not score a single run. In 2023, he scored 61 runs in 7 matches, with 23 being his highest score and his strike rate being 164.86. In 2024, he played only one match but did not bat. Overall, Krishnappa Gowtham has scored 247 runs in 36 matches in the IPL so far, with his best score being 33*.

Record-breaking Suryavanshi helps India U-19s beat England by 4 wickets

Teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his rich vein of form by smashing a record nine sixes as India defeated England by four wickets in the rain-truncated third U19 Youth ODI to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series here. The 14-year-old Suryavanshi, who had come close to striking half-centuries in the previous two games before getting dismissed in his 40s, finally made his innings count as he clobbered the home team bowling on way to 86 off just 31 deliveries as India chased England's 268/6 in 34.3 overs on Wednesday. Suryavanshi's knock was studded with six boundaries and nine maximums. In fact, nine sixes by Suryavanshi is the highest number of maximums hit by an Indian batter in an U-19 ODI eclipsing the previous record of eight sixes by Mandeep Singh. India suffered a slump in the middle overs with the team reduced to 199 for 6 in the 24th over. But bowling all-rounder Kanishk Chouhan (3/30), who had taken three England wickets earlier, hit an unbeaten 43 (42 balls) and shared an unbroken 75-run stand with RS Ambrish (31 not out) to guide the team to victory. Suryavanshi ravaged every single bowler that bowled to him and made his intentions clear when he smacked right-arm pacer Sebastian Morgan for two consecutive sixes in the third over. Morgan came in for some harsh punishment again in his subsequent over when he was hit for two more sixes and a boundary by the 14-year-old batting sensation, who has been on a roll since showing his precocious talent in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals. England left-arm pacer James Minto bore the brunt of Suryavanshi's fury in the sixth over, going for 23 runs, which included three sixes and a boundary. When Suryavanshi was finally dismissed, caught by Joseph Moores off right-arm pacer Alexander Wade, India had wiped off 111 runs from the target in only the eighth over. Suryavanshi's departure saw India struggle a bit in the middle overs before Kanishk and Ambrish played with caution to guide the team home with 33 balls to spare. Earlier, England skipper Thomas Rew smashed an unbeaten 76 (44 balls) while opener Ben Dawkins struck form with a fine 62 as the hosts scored a competitive 268 for 6 after the match was delayed due to a wet outfield. Dawkins, a right-handed batter, following two successive below-par scores, gave England the start they needed after they were put in to bat by the visitors on an overcast day. Dawkins and his left-handed opening partner Isaac Mohammed (41 off 43 balls) displayed immense calm playing the moving ball as they stitched together a 78-run partnership at the top to give the hosts the start they needed. Isaac's dismissal did not slow the flow of runs as the next batter in Ben Mayes played an almost run-a-ball innings scoring 31 (32) to guide England to 133/2 by the 22nd over. The 55-run partnership for the second wicket between Dawkins and Mayes really gave the home team the momentum, which was later capitalised by skipper Rew as he launched into the Indian bowling attack by playing some cracking shots that left the visitors searching for ideas. Brief scores: England U-19: 174 all out in 42.2 overs (Isaac Mohammed 41, BJ Dawkins 62, Ben Mayes 31, Thomas Rew 76 not out, Ralphie Albert 21; Kanishk Chouhan 3/30) lost to India U-19: 274 for 6 in 34.3 overs (Vaibhav Suryavanshi 86, Vihaan Malhotra 46, Rahul Kumar 27, Kanishk Chouhan 43 not out, RS Ambrish 31 not out; Alexander Wade 2/58).

'Does This Require Suspension?': HC On Karnataka Govt's Action Against Cop Over Bengaluru Stampede

Last Updated: The Karnataka High Court questioned the need to suspend senior IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash after a fatal Bengaluru stampede, suggesting a transfer might have sufficed. The Karnataka High Court on Thursday asked the state government if the suspension of senior IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash, who faced the action in the wake of a fatal stampede in Bengaluru last month, was necessary. The High Court's observation came while it was hearing the Siddaramaiah government's plea challenging the quashing of Vikash's suspension order by the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). Advocate General (AG) Shashi Kiran Shetty, appearing for the state government, defended the suspension order, saying it was a 'clear case of dereliction of duty", making it a 'fit case" for suspension. The next hearing in the matter will take place on July 9. IPS officer Vikash had challenged the government's June 5 suspension order before the Tribunal, which also included the names of then Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and DCP Shekar H Tekkannavar. Eleven people lost their lives after nearly 2.5 lakh fans thronged the MG Road and Cubbon Road areas near the stadium after RCB announced a victory parade and a fan engagement programme to celebrate the team's maiden IPL triumph. The RCB had posted in its social media handles about the parade and the fan engagement on the morning of June 4, and the Tribunal noted that the police department did not have sufficient time in its hands to manage such a large gathering at such short notice. 'Because of shortage of time on 04.06.2026, the police was unable to do the appropriate arrangements. Sufficient time was not given to the police. Suddenly, the RCB created the aforesaid type of nuisance without any prior permission," the CAT noted. The Tribunal then held that the Royal Challengers are 'prima facie" responsible for the tragic events unfolded later in the evening near the stadium. 'Therefore, prima facie it appears that the RCB is responsible for the gathering of about three to five lakh people. The RCB did not take the appropriate permission or consent from the police," the CAT noted. 'Suddenly, they posted on social media platforms and as a result of aforesaid information the public were gathered," added the CAT. (with inputs from PTI)

What records can Vaibhav Suryavanshi break? If in the next matches Vaibhav Suryavanshi manages to hit a century, he would become the youngest Indian to score a Youth ODI hundred. For India, Raj Angad Bawa has hit the quickest century in Youth ODIs; the all-rounder smoked a 69-ball century against Uganda in the 2022 U-19 World Cup, which India went on to win.
