According to police, the main accused Surjith was booked under the Goondas Act for allegedly murdering Kavin Selva Ganesh, belonging to the Devendra Kula Vellalar community, a sub-caste of Dalits, for being in a relationship with his sister, S Subhashini, who belonged to the Maravar community. Based on the complaint of Ganesh's mother S Tamilselvli, the parents of the accused, Saravanan and Krishnakumari, sub-inspectors in the Tamil Nadu Special Police Force, were also named in the FIR and suspended on June 29.
'The couple serving as sub-inspectors in the Tamil Nadu Special Police Force have been suspended to ensure that the investigation is impartial and transparent. Considering the nature and importance of the case, and to ensure a free and unbiased investigation, the case has now been handed over to the CB-CID,' director general of police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal said.
According to police, on July 27, Ganesh was invited by Surjith to his house for a discussion and he agreed to tag along. But on the way, Surjith abruptly stopped his two-wheeler, pulled out a sickle and indiscriminately attacked Ganesh. When Ganesh tried to flee, Surjith overpowered him and hacked him to death.
The suspected hate crime has led to a growing chorus, with the allies of the ruling DMK demanding a separate legislation to tackle such incidents.
Thol Thirumavalavan, chief of VCK, an ally of the ruling DMK, demanded a legislation to prevent such crimes. CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam, too, demanded that the state government enact a legislation to prevent such incidents.
'The Tamil Nadu government must enact a specific law to help prevent such crimes,' said MP Sasikanth Senthil of the Congress, an ally of the ruling DMK.

EPS slams DMK for halting welfare schemes, vows to revive them
Tenkasi: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday accused the DMK govt of discontinuing key welfare schemes initiated by the previous AIADMK regime, including the free laptop scheme for government school students and Amma mini clinics, purely for political reasons. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Addressing the public in Tenkasi, Ambasamudram, and Alangulam as part of his Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom campaign, EPS said, "Under AIADMK rule, Tamil Nadu topped the country in higher education enrolment. The free laptop scheme helped thousands of rural students access future-ready technology. But the DMK scrapped it after coming to power." He also criticised the DMK for shutting down the Amma mini clinics. "Now the chief minister is holding one-day Nalam Kaakum Stalin medical camps. Is he interested in people's health only now? Amma mini clinics provided daily medical care within 2–3 km for every locality. Why politicise welfare schemes?" he asked, promising to revive both schemes if AIADMK returns to power. EPS further hit out at the DMK for failing to deliver on several 2021 poll promises made to Tenkasi. "Why do you need a CM who cannot keep his word? DMK is now openly admitting it depends on allies to win in 2026. We, the AIADMK and BJP, depend only on people — because for us, people are the true rulers," he said. Earlier in the day, EPS met representatives from people with disabilities, farmers, and merchants in Tirunelveli and Tenkasi. Representatives of the people with disabilities demanded higher monthly assistance, better access to education, and job opportunities. EPS assured them of AIADMK's support, saying, "Differently abled people are pure of heart, and their rightful demands will be fulfilled." MSID:: 123124069 413 |

Attempt to tarnish BSP's image: Mayawati
Lucknow: national president on Tuesday clarified that her party was neither with BJP's NDA alliance nor with Congress's INDIA, or for that matter, with any other front. "BSP follows the Ambedkarite principle and policy of 'Sarvajan Hitaye and Sarvajan Sukhaye', unlike these two, or any other casteist alliance," she said in reaction to a TV channel news report, adding that some media, especially those which were anti-Dalit/tribals and other backward classes and subscribed to a casteist mentality, leave no stone unturned to tarnish BSP's image and cause political damage. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BSP needs to alert its people against them constantly. She called out a "wrong, factless and poisonous news" on a YouTube channel, saying, "The disgusting attempt made to harm the image of BSP, especially before elections, cannot be condemned enough." She also sought an apology from the channel. "It is a special appeal that party members should always be cautious of such disgusting tactics of the media as part of a political conspiracy and not get misled, because casteist elements are always engaged in some form or the other to weaken the Ambedkarite caravan," she stated.
