Peace River Nuclear Power Project
OTTAWA, ON, June 23, 2025 /CNW/ - The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) have initiated the process for a potential integrated assessment for the proposed Peace River Nuclear Power Project, a new nuclear power plant located north of the Town of Peace River, Alberta.
As part of the planning phase in the integrated assessment process, IAAC and CNSC invite Indigenous Nations and communities and the public to review and provide feedback on the draft Integrated Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines (the draft Integrated Guidelines) and the draft Public Participation Plan (draft Plan).
The draft Integrated Guidelines outline the specific factors to be considered in the assessment of the project and provide direction to the proponent, Energy Alberta, on the studies and information required in its Impact Statement, as well in the licence application for a licence to prepare site. The draft Plan explains how the public will be engaged throughout the review process and provides details on how and when public participation opportunities will take place for each phase of the integrated assessment.
The project is likely subject to an integrated assessment since it must meet the requirements of both the Impact Assessment Act and the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. IAAC and CNSC are working together on the project's review to achieve the goal of "one project, one assessment."
How can I participate?
Comments should be submitted online by visiting the project home page on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry (reference number 89430). The draft Integrated Guidelines and the draft Plan are also available on the Registry. Participants who wish to provide their input in a different format can contact IAAC by writing to [email protected].
Submit your comments online by 11:59 p.m. on July 23, 2025. All comments received will be published online as part of the project file.

Information Sessions
IAAC and CNSC invite anyone who is interested to attend an in-person English information session to learn more about the project, the integrated assessment process, and how to submit comments on the draft documents. A French session is available upon request.
(Note that the town halls are being led by the municipalities, but IAAC and CNSC will be attending to give a presentation and answer questions.)

In a congratulatory letter to the Global Civilizations Dialogue Ministerial Meeting on Thursday, held in Beijing from July 10 to 11, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that in a world where transformation and turbulence are interwoven and humanity stands at a new crossroads, there is an ever-pressing need for civilizations to transcend estrangement through exchanges and to transcend clashes through mutual learning. Themed "Safeguarding Diversity of Human Civilizations for World Peace and Development," the two-day meeting attracted over 600 guests from 140 countries and regions. Why China proposed the Global Civilization Initiative Xi proposed the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) in 2023 after proposing the Global Development Initiative in 2021 and the Global Security Initiative in 2022. The three initiatives have earned international support as important public goods provided to the world by China. With a vision of building a world where civilizations don't collide but converse, the GCI responds to the international community's call for promoting dialogue and exchanges among civilizations and gathers forces to eliminate misunderstandings and barriers, injecting positive energy into human solidarity in responding to common challenges. In his keynote speech, Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, said the GCI, which is deeply rooted in China's fine traditional culture, has received enthusiastic responses and positive echoes from the international community. Noting that the path to global peace and development remains long and challenging, Cai called for joint efforts to explore diverse development models, strengthen cultural inheritance and innovation, advance cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and build a diverse and multi-dimensional global network for dialogue and cooperation among civilizations. Over the years, China has established a series of multilateral exchange platforms, such as the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations and the Conference on Dialogue Between Chinese and African Civilizations, and held a series of activities, including the China-ASEAN People-to-People Exchange Year and the Liangzhu Forum, building a platform for equal dialogue among different civilizations. According to a recent CGTN poll, respondents widely recognize inter-civilization exchanges and mutual learning as a crucial driving force for advancing human civilization and promoting world peace and development, adding that the GCI has evolved into a broad consensus for addressing global challenges. Donald Trump's announcement of 35% tariffs on our goods coming into force on August 1 st is a calculated attack—an attempt to bully our country, break our backbone, and force us to kneel to his agenda. It comes two days after he imposed a 50% tariff on copper. Time and time again, he's targeted our industries, our livelihoods, and the communities that keep this country running. The mere instability caused by his unpredictable attacks has made investment decisions impossible—hurting both workers and our industries. Let me be clear: Canada does not cave. We do not retreat. And we will not be intimidated. To our governments: Appeasement does not work. In response to Trump's demands, Canada has spent millions to address border issues, we rescinded our digital services tax, and scaled back counter-tariffs. Like a bully, Trump's only response to Canada's good-faith efforts is nothing but escalation. This is a moment for strength. A moment to meet Trump's aggression with the full force of Canada's resolve. We need urgent action now: Impose counter-tariffs in response to the latest tariff attacks from Trump Introduce export taxes on Canadian energy sold to the U.S. Mandate that all national infrastructure projects use Canadian steel, aluminum, and lumber. Invest directly in affected workers and communities by enhancing Employment Insurance, expanding Work-Sharing, and providing emergency income supports. Launch ambitious, nation-building projects like affordable housing, clean energy, and public transit that create union jobs and build Canadian resilience. We must stop reacting and start leading. Canada's workers are ready to stand up for this country. It's time our governments stood with them, with boldness and with urgency. To every worker in Canada: This won't be easy.
