Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson shows off how well he's getting his full speed back

USA Today3 days ago
With training camp right around the corner, Lions fans are getting some good news. Star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson continues to get closer and closer to being 100 percent recovered from his Week 6 knee injury last season against the Dallas Cowboys.
Hutchinson recently shared to his Instagram another piece of his rehab process and showing off how much speed he has gained back in his recovery. Hutchinson posted him running a 10-yard split -- the time typically shown in addition to a 40-yard dash time at the Scouting Combine.
Hutchinson ran a 1.49 10-yard split. Needless to say, that is a very fast time. The faster the 10-yard split, the more explosive a player is coming out of their stance. If Hutchinson is already back to this speed in early July, he'll be more than ready to fly past opposing offensive tackles in about two months.

Ndamukong Suh retires from the NFL: Thanks to one of the best Lions of the 21st century

One of the best Detroit Lions players of the 21st century has officially hung up his football cleats. Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh announced his retirement from the NFL this weekend. Suh was the Lions' first-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, the No. 2 overall pick. He would play his first five seasons in Detroit, quickly proving to be an impact talent and cornerstone of the rise up from the winless 2008 squad to a team that competed hard in a couple of postseasons. Suh was a divisive figure. His hostile, physical style of play earned him a reputation around the league as a "dirty" player. The infamous "Suh stomp" on Aaron Rodgers in a 2014 game against the Green Bay Packers was the most notorious, but there's a timeline of nefarious plays from Suh's time in Detroit that made him known as much for being dirty as for being one of the NFL's best at his position. And that he was. Suh earned the Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2010 with 10 sacks, 66 tackles, one INT and a scoop-and-score touchdown. Not only was Suh the DROY, he was a first-team All-Pro as a rookie. Suh would earn that accolade in three of his five Detroit seasons and was second-team All-Pro in another. He finished his five seasons with the Lions by registering 238 tackles, 36 sacks, 98 QB hits, 15 PDs, two forced fumbles and one safety. Suh was always known for his off-field business acumen and savvy. That proved problematic for Detroit when Suh hit free agency and he was able to capitalize on the market, signing with the Miami Dolphins and exploiting the state of Florida's lack of income tax to earn more on the same contract than he would have in Michigan. While still a formidable player for several more years, Suh never recaptured his Lions-era heights. He last played for the Eagles in 2022. On a personal front, Suh remains one of the five highest-graded defensive prospects in my 22 years evaluating NFL draft prospects, and the highest-graded defensive lineman. His blend of power, quickness off the snap and relentlessness to punish the opposing QB (or RB) was readily evident in his collegiate days at Nebraska. I'm thrilled that he got to play his best years in Detroit and help restore some roar to the Lions at a time when there hadn't been a lot recently to be proud of with the franchise. Suh will always be one of my favorite Lions. Enjoy retirement, and I'm looking forward to Suh's eventual induction into the Pride of the Lions.

Saints won't be hiring ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky to their coaching staff after all

Orlovsky, former Lions QB and Kellen Moore teammate, will stay at ESPN on new contract Dan Orlovsky fueled speculation early this offseason that he might be joining his old teammate Kellen Moore on the New Orleans Saints coaching staff, but that never did come to pass. Instead, with the Saints bringing in training camp interns and last-minute pickups as assistant coaches (like Tulane Green Wave running backs coach Brock Hays), Orlovsky signed a new contract with ESPN to remain a high-profile personality with the flagship network. Orlovsky, 41, spent a dozen years in the NFL as a backup for five different teams (and two stops on the Detroit Lions, where he overlapped with Moore). He's now set to begin Year 6 of hosting NFL Live and his fourth season of appearances on Monday Night Football while making guests spots on morning shows and keystone broadcasts like Get Up, SportsCenter, First Take and The Pat McAfee Show, among other programs. The former pro quarterback has become a popular draw over at ESPN. Would he have made sense for the Saints? Maybe. But the team has plenty of former quarterbacks on their coaching staff already. Beyond Moore himself, they loaded up with veterans like offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier (who has thrown a touchdown pass or two at the Superdome) and Scott Tolzien, who worked under Moore on the Dallas Cowboys after his own seven-year pro career. Orlovsky would've fit the profile as a retired QB, but the Saints may have taken the right approach by hiring guys with experience as coaches, too.

Prop Tom Clarkson called up by British & Irish Lions as front row cover in Australia

Associated Press BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Ireland prop Tom Clarkson was called up by the British and Irish Lions squad touring Australia as front row cover on Sunday. The Lions said there were no injury issues with the three tightheads they have: Tadhg Furlong, Will Stuart and Finlay Bealham. Clarkson was summoned only to 'provide additional front row cover,' the Lions said. The Lions have only four more matches left on tour, the three-test series against Australia beginning next Saturday in Brisbane and a midweek match against a First Nations and Pasifika XV the following week in Melbourne. Clarkson has eight caps for Ireland and started in the recent tour wins over Georgia and Portugal, against which he scored his first test try. Clarkson's arrival will increase the number of Leinster players in the Lions squad to 14, and the Ireland contingent to 18. The Lions have been seeking reinforcements lately. Fellow Ireland and Leinster back Jamie Osborne joined the squad on Sunday, and England hooker Jamie George was on his way from Argentina. ___ AP rugby:
