Ella Toone has revealed her grandmother died on the morning of England 's Euro 2025 final victory over Spain. The 25-year-old played the opening 87 minutes of Sunday's match in Basel as the Lionesses retained their title thanks to a penalty shoot-out win following a 1-1 draw. Toone, who helped England win Euro 2022 and finish runners-up to Spain at the 2023 World Cup, started five of her country's six games in Switzerland. 'Even in the highest of highs life can hit you with the lowest of lows,' she posted on Instagram. 'My Nana Maz took her last breath on the morning of our Euro final. 'My football loving, crazy, funny Nan,' her post continued. 'All those years ago when you put a bet on at the bookies that I would play for England one day & on the day you leave us we bring it home again. You always knew it.' Manchester United midfielder Toone lost her father Nick to prostate cancer last September – three days short of his 60th birthday. Toone paid tribute to him moments after England won Euro 2025, in what was the midfielder's first trophy since he passed away in September last year. Toone was in tears after England's shootout victory over Spain and looked towards the sky as she was hugged by Alessia Russo, Keira Walsh and Alex Greenwood. Toone later posted on Instagram that there happened to be a spare seat next to her mum during the final, adding: 'If that's not a sign I don't know what is'. The 25-year-old also uploaded a picture with Beth Mead, who lost her mother June to ovarian cancer 18 months ago, saying: 'We did it for our angels in the sky'.

The Light Blues navigated a tricky test in Panathinaikos to progress in the Champions League Max Aarons believes Rangers are ready to answer Russell Martin's call and storm all the way back into the Champions League proper. The Bournemouth loanee isn't thinking about the Europa League safety net secured by the battling victory over Panathinaikos - as he wants to be among Europe's elite. Rangers still have two huge hurdles to clear if they're to return to the top table for the first time in three years. Czechs Victoria Plzn are up next with a play-off round awaiting the winner. Martin has challenged his players to reach for the stars. And Aarons reckons the resilience shown in Wednesday's Panathinaikos pressure pot proves they should be targeting the money-spinning league phase rather than settling for another crack at the Europa. He said: 'Of course. The manager spoke about it: coming to this club, you have to really respect that you're going to hopefully be part of big competitions and big European nights. We have to earn that. 'Nights like Wednesday give you the confidence that this team can suffer at times and dig in and come through it. 'We want to go as far as we can now. I came here because I believe this team can make the Champions League. 'That's got to be the ultimate goal, doing it the way we want and the way we want to play.' Aarons is one of seven summer recruits already in the door as Martin overhauls his squad. With just five weeks' preparation the new boss and his new-look side were thrown in at the deep end with the qualifiers against the Greek giants. But they came through heavy pressure in both legs to secure a huge 3-1 win on aggregate. Martin's possession-based style has placed huge demands on his players. But Aarons reckons confidence has soared on the back of their Athens success. He said: 'Five weeks in, you never know. We've prepared as much as we could, but you never know going into that first game how it's going to feel. 'Coming through that, growing into that game, ideally we'd start better in this game again. But coming here, you have to ride a little bit of pressure. 'To be in any successful team, you have to be able to do that and come through those moments. Yes, we want to dominate games more, but I think this is a really, really good step for us now. ' Martin's men have little time to recover before another huge test in tomorrow's Premiership opener at Motherwell. Rangers have failed to win on the opening day in both the last two seasons. And the 25-year-old full back knows it's vital they get off to a Fir Park flier and lay down and early marker. He said: 'Of course, it's going to be different in the league. But like I said, that confidence and robustness that you build from playing game in, game out is what you want. You don't want to be waiting a week or 10 days for your next game. 'It's important that we all recover as well as possible, so that come Saturday we can start the league season with a big win. 'It's a big game and we have to take [care of] that now. This confidence coming to Panathinaikos, that is not an easy game and we have to take that into the league, where I believe we can beat anyone.'

Hidden Jahmai Simpson-Pusey Celtic transfer 'clause' raises eyebrows as Sweden international scouted by Hoops
Brendan Rodgers is set to bolster his defence with the signing of Man City prodigy Simpson-Pusey Jahmai Simpson-Pusey will travel to Glasgow on Friday for a medical as the Manchester City starlet closes in on a season-long loan deal with Celtic. The 19-year-old stopper has agreed a switch to Parkhead after Brendan Rodgers fought off competition from other European clubs. Simpson-Pusey will compete with Auston Trusty, Liam Scales and Dane Murray for a start alongside first-choice Cameron Carter-Vickers. The England youth international has been tipped as the future of City's defence by Pep Guardiola after making six appearances last term - including a Champions League debut away to Sporting CP. Ex-Celtic star Charlie Mulgrew reckons the youngster - who was crowned EPL 2 Player of the Year - could quickly become a regular starter. He told Go Radio: "For me, it doesn't feel like Brendan Rodgers is completely satisfied with Trusty or Scales. He's tried to bring in Trusty when Scales was playing. Scales then gets back in. "So it indicates that he's not too sure and needs someone else to get back in alongside Carter-Vickers. "By the way, injuries look like they are catching up a wee bit on him. So they need another one in and Simpson-Pusey looks like the man. Man City will probably put some sort of clause that he'll need to play games or it will cost Celtic money. "It's interesting to put that on a 19-year-old. But you've got to trust Brendan Rodgers. You don't play for Man City if you are a bad player. He's young and bound to make a few mistakes. I'll be interested to see him." Simpson-Pusey's arrival could see Stephen Welsh leave the club either on loan or a permanent basis. The Hoops academy graduate has fallen out of favour under Rodgers and recently spent time on loan with Belgian side Mechelen. Mulgrew reckons a parting of ways is best for both parties as he said: "He's 25 years old. He's got to go. He's never going to be a regular at Celtic. Brendan Rodgers has shown that he's never going to start there. "He's been a decent enough servant. He's come in at times when they've struggled in that position and done ok. He's not a huge presence at the back. "The young lad's come through the system and done ok and he showed a good attitude. He was on loan last year and did ok. He looks like he's going to move on and it's best for all parties." Meanwhile Celtic scouts are reportedly watching Sweden international Viktor Eriksson in action for Hammarby. Valued at £2million, Eriksson joined Hammarby last season after a short stint in the MLS with Minnesota United. The 24-year-old made his international debut earlier this year and the Scottish Sun reports that Hoops talent spotter Paul Tisdale will run the rule over him in Thursday night's Conference League qualifier with Belgian side Charleroi.
