Ambitious Chippa United on a shopping spree; new coach and sporting director
Chippa United has announced the appointment of Sinethemba Badela as their new head coach.
The club expressed confidence in his abilities as he takes over from Thabo September, who parted ways with Chippa following an underwhelming 11th-place finish last season.
Badela, who hails from the Eastern Cape, steps into the leadership role as a promising emerging coaching talent in South African football. He is a former Mamelodi Sundowns DStv Diski Challenge mentor and has an eye for untapped talent.
'This appointment at Chippa United marks his first appointment as a head coach in the Premier Soccer League (PSL). It is a moment of pride not just for him, but for us as a club,' Chippa United's statement read.
'We strive to be more than a club. We are a symbol of possibility, a beacon for talent, and a footballing home for the Pride of the Eastern Cape.'
Last season, he gained invaluable experience as an assistant coach to Rhulani Mokwena at Wydad AC in Morocco.
Badela's appointment is a significant step in Chippa's ambitions to move away from their mid-table mediocrity. Previously, he also played a key role in Mokwena's technical team at Mamelodi Sundowns.
'Coach Badela brings with him international experience, having served as assistant coach at Wydad AC,' the statement continued. 'He now steps into this leadership role with the backing of our club, our supporters, and the province we proudly represent.'
Badela's task will centre around elevating the club's fortunes after a lacklustre season where they amassed 31 points from 28 matches, narrowly missing out on a coveted top-eight spot.
While the details of Badela's contract have yet to be revealed, the club's vision of fostering talent is clear. Chippa United's commitment is underscored by their choice to promote local coaching talent. 'His journey is a testament to what is possible when potential meets opportunity. We are honoured to give him the platform to lead our club at the highest level.'
As preparations for the new season intensify, Chippa United's supporters will be keenly watching to see how coach Badela implements his tactical philosophy and galvanises the squad to achieve their goals.
Additional members of the technical team supporting Badela are expected to be announced soon, as the club looks to build momentum and restore pride among its fans.
Meanwhile, Chippa's owner, Siviwe Mpengesi, on Thursday morning announced the appointment of Sinesipho Mali as the club's new Sporting Director.
Mali, a distinguished tactical analyst for South Africa's national football team, Bafana Bafana, boasts a wealth of knowledge in performance analysis, having previously served in key roles at Chippa and Sekhukhune United. His return to the club marks a notable chapter in his career, underlining the commitment of Mpengesi to revitalise Chippa.
Mali brings a unique blend of academic knowledge and practical skills earned during his tenure as an analyst with Kaizer Chiefs before his recent role at Sekhukhune United, where he not only functioned as an analyst but also took charge of recruitment strategies. His efforts at Sekhukhune were instrumental in the club achieving its highest points tally in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
'With Mali's return, we are investing in leadership that understands the game and also the unique context of our region – ensuring alignment across recruitment, development, and performance, while driving purpose-led progress for the club and province," Chippa's statement read.
Mali will continue to serve as the head of analysis for Bafana Bafana. He also has previous experience with Banyana Banyana and the national Under-23 squad.

He's a respected UK-based horsebreeder, owner and his large stable has produced many champion runners that have won some of the biggest races around the world. But the big drawcard for him is the outing on Saturday. 'It's a race renowned all over the world and I can't wait to experience it in person. I have followed South African racing for some time and they have always produced very good horses. 'It's great the restrictions have been lifted and hopefully we will see more of the South African horses on the world stage too.' His affinity for all things horsey kicked in around age 10, by then his football goalscoring ability had already taken its stride. 'It was my dad who caused it. If I scored a couple of goals on a Saturday we would stop outside the bookies (bookmakers), he'd give me a pound and I'd be able to buy some sweets while he went in to place bets. 'We'd go home and put the TV on – horseracing was the only sport on at the time on a Saturday afternoon. 'When I got to around 13 I used to read up in the newspapers about which jockeys were winning the races and who their trainers were and started to pick the horses out for dad and that's where my love for horses began.' Owen remembered returning from a FIFA World Cup Tournament (France 1998), he was 18 then, when his England teammate, David Platt, talked to him about owning a horse. 'I just assumed it was just for the Queen and the sheikhs of the world, not the man on the street like me. 'He (Platt) introduced me to his trainer, John Gosden. I subsequently had all my horses with John, the numbers kept swelling and by the time I got to my early twenties I was thinking, I may be a footballer now, but I won't be one forever.' He responded by building his own yard at age 22, by then he already owned horses. This led to the establishment of Manor House in Cheshire, which grew appreciably over the years and now stands as one of the biggest yards in an area that is well-known for horse rearing and training. Owen said he and his team kept pushing boundaries at Manor House and have been the pacesetters when it came to the use of science and technology at his yard that is home to a string of more than 130 horses. Hugo Palmer is the current trainer at Manor House. Some of his Manor House charges have competed around the globe in prestigious events like the Melbourne Cup and Breeders Cup. 'I'm really pleased with how the stables have grown and improved. 'I am probably most proud of Brown Panther - I bred him and co-owned him and he went on to win the Dubai Gold Cup and the Irish St Ledger.' On how he straddles between football analysis and running a flourishing stable, Owen said: 'Football still takes priority - working on football is my day job and I love it. 'Percy Tau is running around in the streets of Mpumalanga' – ex-Pirates star
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly forward Percy Tau is still without a club. The 31-year-old became a free agent after leaving Qatar in May. He has since returned to South Africa and is open to playing in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) should any team propose a right offer for him. Former Pirates winger Mark Mayambela said Percy Tau could be a great addition to the Buccaneers. Speaking on Soccer Beat, the former trickster encourages the Soweto giants to sign Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile. '[If not Shalulile] Also, we spoke about Percy as well. He is also running around somewhere in the streets of Mpumalanga and I feel..[he can be a good fit for Pirates]. Speaking to Robert Marawa on Radio 94.7 , Tau revealed that he would accept a monthly salary of R450,000 from Chiefs. 'If that situation were to happen [to receive an offer from Chiefs], I would pay attention to it,' he admitted. 'But there are still other clubs in the PSL. I mean, I played for Sundowns, so I cannot write them off. It's a team that I played for, I won, and I've got so much love for the team and the fans. If Sundowns were not to offer me a contract and Chiefs do, then it won't be my fault but theirs that I've gone to join Chiefs,' he said. Springbok Women reinforced by duo's return for landmark Canada Test
Zintle Mpupha and Micke Gunter will return to the starting lineup for the Springbok Women to face Canada at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday, marking their first encounter with the North Americans. Both players last featured for the Bok Women in the WXV 2 against Italy, missing this year's Tests due to Sevens obligations and injury, respectively. Their inclusion adds experience and depth in what will be South Africa's first home clash against Canada in history.
