The largest Reconstructionist synagogue in the United States has decided to leave the movement, citing concerns over what it perceives as an allowance of anti-Israel hostility. The decision highlights growing tensions within religious communities regarding attitudes toward Israel, particularly in the wake of recent events.
The details emerged in a report by the Times of Israel.
Key takeaways
Departure from Reconstructionist Movement: The synagogue, the largest within the Reconstructionist stream of Judaism, has formally withdrawn from the movement. This decision underscores significant disagreements over the handling of Israel-related issues and the broader political climate within the Reconstructionist community.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
Concerns over anti-Israel hostility: A central reason for the synagogue's departure is its belief that the Reconstructionist movement has, to some extent, permitted or failed to adequately address anti-Israel sentiment. This concern likely stems from debates and discussions within the movement regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and related issues.
Student experiences and isolation: The decision also reflects broader tensions experienced by pro-Israel students on campuses. Reports indicate that after forming a pro-Israel student group following October 7, these students faced isolation and hostility from their peers, as noted by JTA.
This campus climate may have influenced the synagogue's perspective on the wider movement's stance.
Harvard report on anti-Semitism: A final report from Harvard University's Presidential Task Force on Combating Antisemitism and Anti-Israeli Bias, released in April 2025, highlights the challenges faced by Jewish students. The report includes data on students' experiences, broken down by affiliation, religion, and race, further contextualizing the environment in which these tensions have arisen.
The synagogue's departure reflects a growing divide within religious and academic communities regarding Israel. As institutions grapple with these complex issues, the decision by the largest Reconstructionist synagogue to leave its movement marks a significant moment, according to the Times of Israel.

‘UP saw dismantling of criminal network under Yogi in 8 years'

Lucknow: Highlighting the "immense changes" in law and order in the state since the BJP came to power in 2017, a govt spokesperson outlined the condition of Uttar Pradesh before 2017 and now. Following CM Yogi Adityanath's rise to power, the administration initiated a series of decisive actions to dismantle the criminal network that had taken root. Since the BJP came to power, there was a surge in police action against gangsters, seizure of illegal properties, and court trials were fast-tracked. There was a crackdown on unlawful religious conversions and the drug mafia. This, said the official, saw a sharp decline in criminal activity. "Under its zero-tolerance policy on crime, the state govt over the past eight years has seen over 240 dangerous criminals being killed in police encounters. During this time, the police carried out more than 15,000 encounters, arresting over 30,000 criminals. More than 9,000 criminals were injured in these operations," said the official. The govt cracked down on illegal properties of criminals, which broke the backbone of the mafia network and boosted public trust in the govt. As per govt data, illegal assets worth more than Rs 14,200 crore were seized or destroyed over the past eight years. Under 'Operation Conviction', about 1 lakh criminals have been convicted so far, which includes nearly 10,000 criminals sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes like rape, murder, and organised crime. Another 68 criminals have been sentenced to death. On average, courts are resolving 143 cases daily and punishing 187 criminals each day thanks to strong legal efforts, the official added. To crack down on the illegal drug trade, the govt has carried out large-scale operations, which include raids on fake liquor factories and inter-state mafia networks. Illegal liquor has been destroyed, and thousands of smugglers were arrested. An Anti-Narcotics Task Force was also set up, which has helped in the recovery of illegal drugs worth over Rs 2,737 crore and the registration of more than 30,000 cases. The govt went all out against illegal conversions, passing the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021, under which hundreds of people have been arrested, and several organised conversion rackets have been busted, claimed the official, citing the recent crackdown on Jalaluddin alias Changur, a key accused in an illegal religious conversion network. The state govt's policy, which the CM reiterates publicly at every occasion, is that a criminal will either be in jail in UP or out of the state.

India rejects UK report alleging ‘transnational repression'

India Friday categorically rejected as 'baseless' a British parliamentary report that named it among countries engaged in 'transnational repression' in the UK. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the allegations stemmed from 'unverified' and 'dubious sources' predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals. 'We have seen the references to India in the report and categorically reject these baseless allegations,' said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. 'These claims stem from unverified and dubious sources, predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals with a clear, documented history of anti-India hostility,' he said. Jaiswal said the 'deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself'. The report made by the British Parliament's Joint Committee on Human Rights listed India along with China, Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Pakistan, Russia, Bahrain, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates as countries allegedly engaging in 'transnational repression' in the UK. The report titled 'Transnational repression in the UK' was made public on July 30. Some of the details related to India cited in the report were provided by Sikhs for Justice, a pro-Khalistan organisation banned in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and other UK-based Sikh groups.

India slams UK parliamentary report on ‘Transnational Repression' as baseless, cites dubious sources

NEW DELHI: India on Friday strongly rejected a British parliamentary panel's report that accused it of engaging in "transnational repression' within the United Kingdom, calling the allegations baseless and rooted in anti-India propaganda. 'We have seen the references to India in the report and categorically reject these baseless allegations,' said Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a strong rebuttal. The UK report, published by a parliamentary committee, had cited India among several countries allegedly involved in targeting dissidents abroad. However, New Delhi dismissed the credibility of the report, asserting that its claims were based on 'unverified and dubious sources.' 'These claims stem from unverified and dubious sources, predominantly linked to proscribed entities and individuals with a clear, documented history of anti-India hostility,' Jaiswal said. 'The deliberate reliance on discredited sources calls into question the credibility of the report itself.'
