Range Rover SV Black unveiled, gets all-black treatment
Land Rover has officially unveiled the newest addition to its flagship SUV lineup – the Range Rover SV Black, a model that redefines luxury and innovation for the modern elite. Set to be available for order in late 2025, this ultra-luxurious variant will join the existing SV Serenity and SV Intrepid, further enriching the Range Rover SV family with an all-black, deeply refined design theme and cutting-edge technology.
As the name suggests, the SV Black is going all-out with the Black theme. The exterior is finished in Narvik Gloss Black. Every detail—from the polished black grille and gloss black bonnet lettering to the bespoke 23-inch alloy wheels and subtly branded brake calipers— are now finished in black. At the rear, a ceramic SV roundel subtly signifies the vehicle's place in the ultra-premium SV portfolio.

Inside, the SV Black features an all-new Ebony Near-Aniline leather interior with minimal stitching for a clean, seamless aesthetic. Black birch veneers and satin black ceramic finishes, including on the gear shifter, complement the cabin's rich texture. Moonlight Chrome accents add a sophisticated gleam across the interior, elevating the tactile and visual experience.
One of the standout features of the SV Black is its debut of world-first Sensory Floor technology, enhancing Range Rover's existing Body and Soul Seat (BASS) system. This innovation allows occupants to not only hear but also feel the audio experience through synchronized vibrations in the floor mats, powered by transducers embedded in both the seats and the footwells. The thick-pile carpet encourages users to remove their shoes and immerse themselves fully in the experience.
The system includes six wellness modes such as 'Calm' and 'Invigorating', designed to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve cognitive alertness during journeys. This technology comes standard on all long-wheelbase SV models, including the new SV Black.

Shield for mass market, drive-in for luxe cars
India will slash duties on high-end cars from the United Kingdom under the free trade deal signed on Thursday, while protecting the mass-market segment where Indian manufacturers are gaining global ground. "Vehicles priced below £40,000 (about ₹46 lakh including cost, insurance and freight), where Indian automakers are highly active, have been explicitly excluded from any duty concession," an explanatory note released by the commerce ministry said. "The concessions are targeted largely at large engine capacity ICE vehicles- above 3000 cc petrol or 2500 cc diesel and high-end EVs priced above £80,000 (CIF)...providing a protective shield to the mass-market EV segment," it said. The deal is likely to benefit luxury car brands such as Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Lotus, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and BMW Mini, which currently face steep import duties of about 110% in India. Under the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), India will gradually reduce customs duties to 10% for a specific quota of high-end vehicles over five years. For out-of-quota imports, the duty cut will be limited to 50% over 10 years. Notably, no duty concessions will be extended to EVs, hybrids, or hydrogen-powered vehicles during the first five years of the agreement. From the sixth year, the number of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles permitted under the concessional regime will decrease in proportion to the number of EVs imported, with the total import quota capped at 37,000 vehicles over 15 years. JLR, the Tata Motors-owned British marque, welcomed the deal even though many of its products being sold in India will not benefit. "India is an important growth market for our British-built luxury products," said a JLR India spokesperson. Around 60% of the cars JLR sells in India, including popular models in the Range Rover portfolio - Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Velar and Evoque - are already locally produced through the CKD route. "Only a limited number of high-value SV models are currently exported from the UK to India and therefore in scope of the FTA," said the spokesperson. Defender, which is manufactured in Slovakia, too, falls outside its scope. Benefit from the trade deal will depend on brand-wise allocation under the duty concession quota, a spokesperson at a European carmaker said. Clarity on pricing will only emerge once the final legal text is released and approved, the person added. Govt finally relaxed customs duty rates on imported cars with the UK trade deal, paving the way for tariffs to come down from highs of over 100 per cent to as low as 10 per cent, benefitting ultra-luxury car brands such as Jaguar and Land Rover, Rolls-Royce , Bentley and Aston Martin . However, govt has delayed the import duty concessions when it comes to electrics and other green cars, the measure being initiated to protect domestic players looking to produce high-value clean cars. "There are no concessions given to electrics, hybrids, and hydrogen-powered vehicles in the first five years," an official said. In petrol and diesel categories, lower tariffs can be enjoyed for a limited number of vehicles as govt has imposed quotas and limits to protect the domestic makers and also curb mass-scale shipments. For large-engine petrol cars above 3000cc and diesel cars over 2500cc - traditionally luxury imports - India has committed to lowering current 100 per cent + customs duty to 10 per cent over 15 years, within a quota starting at 10,000 units and rising to 19,000 in year five, according to an analysis by Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), a think tank. For mid-sized cars (1500-2500cc diesel/up to 3000cc petrol), a 50 per cent in-quota duty applies initially, falling to 10 per cent by year five. Small cars under 1500cc follow a similar tariff reduction path with a growing quota. "These in-quota vehicles enjoy sharply reduced duties, while out-of-quota imports still face tariffs ranging from 95 per cent to 50per cent, depending on vehicle size and year," GTRI said. In electrics, market access has been given mostly in the high-price segment of vehicles priced above £80,000 (around Rs 94 lakh). "For vehicles priced below £40,000, no market access provided, ensuring complete protection for the mass-market EV segment in which India seeks global leadership," the official said. While the duty cuts will happen only once the UK Parliament approves the agreement (possibly by the middle of next year), analysts believe that the duty reduction with the UK may pave the way for similar measures with other countries and trading blocs as well. "This is India's first-ever auto tariff concession in any FTA, and it's likely to trigger similar demands from Japan, the EU, South Korea, and the US," GTRI added.
