Norway suspends staff members in ski jump cheating scandal at world championships
The federation said coach Magnus Brevig and equipment manager Adrian Livelten were suspected of modifying ski suits by sewing in an extra seam in an attempt to create more lift in the air. Norway is one of the traditional powers within ski jumping, and the cheating attempt at its home world championships has caused a massive outcry in a country that prides itself on its winter sports prowess.
Two Norwegian ski jumpers, Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang, were disqualified from Saturday's men's large hill competition after organisers said their suits broke the rules. Lindvik had finished second in the event before he was disqualified.
The federation on Sunday admitted that the suits had been deliberately altered, after a video emerged online of the alterations being made. 'The way I consider this … we have cheated,' said Jan-Erik Aalbu, general manager of the federation. 'We have tried to cheat the system. That is unacceptable.'
Brevig told Norwegian media on Monday that several team members had been involved in the decision to alter the suits, but added that: 'I should have stopped it.' He claimed it was the first time they had stitched in an extra seam, but made a sailing analogy to explain why a stiffer suit would help the jumpers fly farther in the air. 'A tighter sail is better than a loose sail,' he said.
The federation said Brevik and Livelten would be suspended indefinitely while inquiries continue. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation said Sunday that it had opened its own investigation.

Erling Haaland recently went on holiday to Rome with his girlfriend, Isabel Haugseng Johansen, and fans are doing their best to try and convince him to return permanently Erling Haaland has been inundated with messages from Roma fans after the Manchester City star was spotted on holiday the Italian capital. Haaland, who turns 25 on Monday, was pictured walking around Rome with his girlfriend Isabel Haugseng Johansen, the mother of the striker's first child. Haaland and City team-mates aren't having a regular pre-season like the 18 other Premier League sides due to their participation in the recent Club World Cup alongside winners Chelsea. But the Norwegian wasn't just in Italy to see the sights. During his and Johansen's trip, they attend a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show. After the event, Haaland shared a post to his 37.9 million followers on Instagram raving about Rome's beauty. "Rome is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to!" the 24-year-old wrote. "And the food? Omg. Incredible. I'm enjoying the summer! Thanks D&G and the city of Rome for making the time here smooth. I love Italy!" Of course, Roma's passionate supporters took the opportunity to try and urge Haaland to come back on a permanent basis - however unlikely given that he recently signed an extraordinary nine-a-half-year contract extension with City. "If you love Rome so much, come," one supporter pleaded. A second followed up by urging: "Come to Rome, come to Serie A in the end it's not that bad!!!" Another suggested: "Erling next to [Artem] Dovbyk would be a great offensive partnership." But it wasn't just Roma fans who were trying their luck. "What if you come to Naples?! But my impression is that he wants to demonstrate that he can win at any of the big leagues. "He was in Germany for two-and-a-half years and he could do something like that in his future. London Athletics Meet to showcase world's best, including top Scots
From a Scottish perspective, it's the men's 1500m that's the pick of the afternoon. The race had been billed as the first head-to-head since the Paris Olympic final last summer between 2024 world champion Josh Kerr and his bitter rival, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, but injury has thwarted what would have been their first meeting in almost twelve months, with the Norwegian withdrawing earlier this month citing the Achilles injury that's plagued him all year. Ingebrigtsen's absence only marginally diminishes the quality of the race, however, with the Scots leading the list of favourites for victory. Kerr is tipped for his first Diamond League win of the season but his compatriots, 2022 world champion Jake Wightman and this year's world indoor silver medallist Neil Gourley, will also likely be in contention. Wightman has endured an injury nightmare since winning his world title three years ago but having regained full fitness, he now, encouragingly, appears to be approaching something close to his very best having run his fastest-ever time over the mile earlier this month. Challenging the Scots for victory in this 1500m race will, most likely, be under-20 world record holder Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech from Kenya and Australian wunderkind, Cameron Myers, from Australia. Muir's competitive appearances have been unusually scarce this season, with the 2020 Olympic 1500m silver medallist having raced only once outdoors this year - in an 800m race in Norway just over two weeks ago in which she clocked 2:03.41. However, having switched coaches to Laura Weightman and Steve Cram in the off-season, there's considerable hope the 32-year-old can return to the consistent major medal-winning form that's been her hallmark for so long. Reekie, who suffered a surprising semi-final exit at the Olympic Games last summer, has been flying under the radar somewhat this year but that by no means suggests she's lacking form. The 2024 World Indoor medallist has already broken 2 minutes four times this summer, as well as setting a 1000m personal best just a week ago. While Olympic 800m champion, Keely Hodgkinson, will be absent due to an ongoing hamstring injury, fellow Brit and Olympic 1500m medallist, Georgia Hunter Bell, will fancy her chances, as will former world champion, Halimah Nakaayi from Uganda. The international names who are most eye-catching are Femke Bol in the 400m hurdles, Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the high jump, Matt Hudson-Smith in the 400m, Noah Lyles in the 100m and Julien Alfred in the 200m.
