'Free Balochistan': Who is Tommy Robinson? Controversial far-right activist who gained support from Elon Musk
— TRobinsonNewEra (@TRobinsonNewEra)
Tensions are running high in Balochistan following a violent crackdown by authorities on a peaceful rally in Hub Chowki. The protest, organised by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC), was held to denounce the extrajudicial killing of Zeeshan Zaheer, a BYC member from Panjgur, allegedly targeted by a state-backed death squad.
The BYC reports that a large number of women, children, and families of forcibly disappeared persons had joined the rally.
Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, security forces responded with aerial firing, tear gas shelling, and mass arrests once the demonstration ended. Among those detained were four women — Sadiya, Samina, Aseela, and Mehtab — and human rights activist Abdullah Baloch. More than 20 hours later, their whereabouts remain unknown, with no legal proceedings initiated.
Who is Tommy Robinson?
Robinson rose to prominence in the UK as the founder of the English Defence League (EDL), a far-right, anti-Islam group notorious for staging violent protests between 2009 and 2013.
His activism has long focused on immigration, Islam, and what he describes as the failure of British authorities to confront crimes like grooming gang abuse.
Over the years, he has been jailed for assault (2005), mortgage fraud (2014), and previous contempt of court offences (2019), the latter for filming defendants during a grooming gang trial and potentially jeopardising judicial proceedings.
Robinson portrays himself as a whistleblower silenced by the state, gaining significant online backing, including from Elon Musk earlier this year, who reinstated Robinson's X account and has echoed his claims about establishment failures in prosecuting child sexual exploitation cases.
Musk had also advocated for his release from jail in January saying, "Why is Tommy Robinson in a solitary confinement prison for telling the truth? He should be freed and those who covered up this travesty should take his place in that cell."

'We Don't Want An Emperor': Brazil's Lula Hits Back At Trump's Tariff Threat On BRICS
Last Updated: Brazilian President Lula da Silva called Trump "irresponsible" for his tariff threat against BRICS countries and said there are other forums for the US to speak to other nations. Brazilian President Lula da Silva hit back at US President Donald Trump, saying the world does not want an 'emperor", after the United States threatened to impose additional 10% tariffs on countries that align with 'anti-American" policies of the BRICS grouping. Lula's remarks came after Trump announced that any country aligning with the BRICS would be charged with an additional 10% tariffs. Notably, India, China, and Russia are a part of the BRICS. 'Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff," Trump had posted on Truth Social. During a press conference at the end of the BRICS Summit in Brazil, Lula said, 'The world has changed. We don't want an emperor. Our countries are sovereign. If Trump issues tariffs, other countries have the right to do the same. There is the reciprocity law." 'I think it's irresponsible for a president from a country like the US to threaten the world with tariffs on social media. Honestly, there are other forums for the president of a country the size of the United States to talk to other countries." BRICS nations brushed aside an accusation from President Trump that they are 'anti-American,' with Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva saying that the world does not need an emperor after the US leader threatened additional tariffs on the bloc — Reuters Asia (@ReutersAsia) July 8, 2025 The Brazilian President said the BRICS group was not harmed to confront anyone and just wanted to be another model to do politics. His remarks came as Trump sent out letters to 14 countries on Monday, imposing higher tariffs in the range of 25 to 40% in a new phase of his trade war. Will Trump Impose Tariffs On BRICS? Despite Trump's threat, his administration does not intend to immediately impose an additional 10% tariff against BRICS nations, but will proceed if individual countries take policies deemed 'anti-American", a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. Responding to a question during the daily press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was closely monitoring the BRICS Summit and did not perceive these countries as growing stronger, but as trying to undermine the US interests. 'The President feels BRICS is seeking to undermine the interests of the United States. It's his utmost responsibility to put the interest of the US first. So he is gonna ensure that America is treated fairly on the world stage, and he will take any action necessary to prevent countries from taking advantage of the United States and our people," she said. This came after leaders in the 11-member BRICS grouping criticised Trump's tariff policies, saying they were damaging the global economy and disrupting trade. The BRICS declaration also described the US tariffs as 'illegal and arbitrary", and said they could further reduce global trade. The 17th BRICS Summit, hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia for the meeting. Trump believes BRICS seeking to 'undermine' US interests: White House
President Donald Trump believes BRICS is seeking to "undermine" the interests of the United States, and he intends to ensure that America is fairly treated on the world stage, the White House stated. While addressing a press briefing on Monday (local time), Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump will take any necessary action to prevent nations from taking "advantage of the US" and its people. "The president feels, generally speaking, that BRICS is seeking to undermine the interests of the United States. It's the president's utmost responsibility to put the interests of the United States first. That's how he views his job as president. So, he's going to ensure that America is fairly treated on the world stage, and he'll take any action necessary to prevent countries from taking advantage of the United States and our people." She stated that Trump is "closely monitoring" the BRICS Summit, and he perceives these nations as trying to undermine the US interests. The 17th BRICS Summit, hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia for the meeting. "He's closely monitoring it (BRICS Summit), which is why he put out a statement himself. He does not perceive these countries as growing stronger. He just perceives them as trying to undermine the United States' interests. And that's not okay with him. No matter how strong or weak a country may be." Her remarks come after Trump issued a strong warning to countries supporting what he termed the anti-American policies of BRICS. In a post shared on Truth Social, Trump stated that any country aligning itself with the "Anti-American policies of BRICS" will face an additional 10 per cent tariff on goods. "Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for your attention to this matter," Trump posted on Truth Social. Trump's statement signals a hard stance from the US administration against what it sees as growing opposition from BRICS nations. The response came after the joint statement of the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting of BRICS nations voiced opposition to the unilateral imposition of trade and finance-related actions, including the raising of tariffs and non-tariff measures. The statement stated, "We voiced our serious concerns with the unilateral imposition of trade and finance-related actions, including the raising of tariffs and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules." The statement further adds that "In this testing environment, BRICS members have demonstrated resilience and will continue to cooperate among themselves and with other countries to safeguard and strengthen the non-discriminatory, open, fair, inclusive, equitable, transparent, and rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, avoiding trade wars that could plunge the global economy into recession or further prolong subdued growth". Altogether, BRICS nations--Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, as well as many other developing nations that have joined BRICS over the last few years --account for nearly half of the world's population and about 40 per cent of the global GDP. The BRICS group now accounts for approximately a quarter of global trade and investment flows.
