Gadkari seeks 5% GST on crude ethanol to push flex-fuel cars, warns against petrol parity
GST
) framework, Union Road Transport Minister
Nitin Gadkari
has called for a reduction in the GST rate on crude ethanol—from the current 18 per cent to 5 per cent —in a bid to support the production and adoption of
flex-fuel vehicles
, according to a report by ToI.
At present, ethanol that is used under the Ethanol Blended
Petrol
(EBP) Programme attracts a concessional GST rate of 5 per cent . However, crude ethanol continues to be taxed at the higher rate of 18 per cent . A source told TNN that
Gadkari
has urged for parity between the two, cautioning that taxing crude ethanol at such a high rate could discourage people from opting for vehicles that run entirely on ethanol.
"Why will people go for these vehicles if the price of crude ethanol is equal to or more than that of petrol?" the source quoted Gadkari as saying.
Although over 400 fuel outlets in the country currently offer 100 per cent ethanol, consumer interest remains weak. Gadkari believes this trend can be reversed if a more favourable tax policy is introduced for crude ethanol.
Gadkari's appeal comes as the Union government is in the process of re-evaluating the GST structure. Finance Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman
and a team of officials are reviewing various rationalisation proposals ahead of detailed consultations with states. The larger exercise aims to streamline the GST regime, enhance revenue efficiency, and address classification issues that have emerged since the tax was introduced in 2017.
Earlier attempts to bring about change through two separate Groups of Ministers (GoMs) did not yield any actionable consensus. A third GoM is now studying the issue of cesses, particularly the compensation cess, which is set to lapse in March next year.
India's GST structure currently features four primary tax slabs: 5 per cent , 12 per cent , 18 per cent , and 28 per cent . While the majority of items fall under the 5 per cent bracket, most of the revenue is generated from the 18 per cent slab. Industry bodies have long been pressing for a simplification of this framework, especially a merger of the 12 per cent and 18 per cent slabs into a single rate of 15–16 per cent . However, such a move may lead to revenue losses and face political opposition from states.
Gadkari's proposal to lower
GST on crude ethanol
aligns with the country's wider energy and transport objectives, including reducing reliance on imported oil and encouraging the use of
alternative fuels
. It is still uncertain whether this suggestion will be included in the final set of GST reforms currently under consideration.

Green goals: Chandigarh Eyes 1.26Cr Tonne CO2 Drop by 2030
1 2 3 Chandigarh: In a powerful push toward sustainability, the Chandigarh Administration has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to slash carbon dioxide emissions by over 1.2 crore tonnes by the year 2030. This green mission is part of the newly launched State Action Plan for Climate Change 2.0 (SAPCC), approved by the Centre. At the heart of the plan is a vision to decarbonise the city's power consumption, complete electrification of public and commercial transport, and ensuring all new commercial buildings are net-zero buildings. The State Action Plan for Climate Change 2.0 (SAPCC), which was recently unveiled after approval from the Centre, outlines the road map to achieve this ambitious target. Under the plan, the main strategies will include making the city a Model Solar City by 2030 by implementing various solar rooftop programmes, including PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, and sourcing the balance power needs from non-fossil energy sources such as hydro, solar, wind, and nuclear. "Installation of 224 MW through various solar rooftop programmes is planned. An annual emission reduction of about 2,68,000 tCO2e by 2030 is estimated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Articles Vally Undo Currently, the city is producing around 90 MW through solar energy," said a UT official. In the transport sector, in addition to providing greater incentives under the Chandigarh Electric Vehicle Policy, the UT will convert its entire bus fleet to electric buses within the SAPCC plan period. It also aims to achieve the highest penetration of Zero Emission Vehicles among all Indian cities by the end of the policy period by providing incentives, promoting environment-friendly commute systems (including converting all buses to electric buses), building EV charging infrastructure, introducing an integrated transport management system (ITMS), and creating public awareness. "In 2024, EVs accounted for 15.26% of total vehicle registration, which is targeted to be increased to 70%," states the plan. To reduce the carbon footprint of the city, the UT also aims to make a big push for energy efficiency in the building sector. The administration is planning to retrofit existing buildings to meet improved energy standards. "The administration aims to adopt the concept of ECBC norms in all newly constructed govt buildings by 2030. Similarly, green building standards and certification will be promoted, and net-zero emissions buildings will be introduced and promoted in the city," states the plan. More focus is being given towards implementing various systems to consolidate existing operations and deriving energy from solid waste in terms of overall energy generation. The city also plans to establish an Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) system. "Implementing various municipal waste processing systems to consolidate existing operations is needed, and deriving energy from solid waste can benefit the system in terms of overall energy generation," states the plan.

Five social media influencers, including Samay Raina, appear before Supreme Court over remarks ‘ridiculing' disabled
India's Got Latent host Samay Raina and four other social media influencers appeared before the Supreme Court on Tuesday over a case regarding mocking disabled people. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi noted the presence of social media influencers and instructed them to submit their responses to the petition. Additionally, the bench asked them to appear again in person on the next hearing date of the case. Apart from Samay, the SC summoned Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, also known as Sonali Aditya Desai, and Nishant Jagdsish Tanwar. The top court, however, granted Sonali Thakkar permission to appear virtually at the next hearing because of a health issue. The bench stated that social media influencers must file their replies within two weeks, and no further extension will be granted. It also warned that their absence at the next hearing will be taken seriously. The Supreme Court instructed Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre, to draft social media guidelines that balance freedom of speech and expression with the rights and responsibilities of others. It stated that one person's freedom should not infringe on the rights of others and highlighted that the most challenging aspect is the enforceability of these guidelines. On May 5, the Supreme Court instructed five social media influencers to appear before it or face coercive measures, following a plea that accused them of ridiculing individuals with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare disorder, as well as others with disabilities, on their show. A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh instructed the Commissioner of Police of Mumbai that Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakar and Nishant Jagdsish Tanwar appear before the top court. The SC's order came after M/s Cure SMA Foundation filed a petition seeking to prevent the broadcast of derogatory and denigrating content on digital media targeting persons with disabilities. The petition also called for the development of guidelines to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities in relation to online content broadcasting.

1 crore new jobs, honorarium for BLOs – what Bihar Cabinet decisions hold ahead of polls
A drive to generate one crore jobs in the next five years, accidental death compensation for businessmen, honorarium to Block-level Officers who are part of enumeration exercise – that is among the 30 significant new proposals that the Nitish Kumar Cabinet approved Tuesday ahead of Bihar's Assembly election. Making the announcement, S Siddharth, additional cabinet chief secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, said that the Labour Resources Department had said it would create one crore jobs in across the public as well as private sectors between 2025 and 2030. 'A 12-member high-level committee will be formed, headed by the Development Commissioner, to examine the scope and options for implementing the proposal. It will include heads of 11 departments, Finance, General Administration, Agriculture, Rural Development, Animal and Fish Resources, Industries, IT, Science and Technology, Education, Tourism, and Labour Resources, tasked with recommending ways to achieve the job target,' the ACS said. Among other major decisions, the Cabinet approved the Bihar Vyavsayi Durghatna Mrityu Anudan Yojana, 2025, under which the government will pay Rs 5 lakh as ex-gratia to the family of a businessman who dies in an accident. The scheme applies to non-corporate taxpayers who are Bihar residents or have registered their business in the state, as well as GST-registered traders. The Cabinet also sanctioned Rs 394.41 crore as grant-in-aid for secondary and higher secondary schools to pay teaching and non-teaching staff – a move that comes months after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar scrapped the states two-decade old unaided education policy. Ahead of election, the Cabinet has approved one-time honorarium of Rs 6,000 to 77,895 Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and 8,245 BLO supervisors currently engaged in the Election Commission of India's ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The cabinet has earmarked Rs 51.68 crore for this. It has also approved Rs 179.37 crore for the maintenance of the Patna Metro Rail Project's priority corridor from August 2025 to March 2028, and another 21.15 crore to lease a three-car metro train set for three years. Additional approvals include Rs 80 crore for equipment upgrades in Bihar's 46 polytechnic colleges, Rs 90 crore for government engineering colleges, and 7,832.29 crore for the expansion and modernisation of the Western Kosi Canal Project, scheduled to be completed by March 2029. Besides this, the Cabinet has also approved Rs 5,119 crore and Rs 4,849 crore for two stretches of Ganga Path Project — a four-lane expressway along Ganga in Patna, Bihar. Other significant decisions include a monthly cap on Rs 25,000 on the special allowance for Bomb Disposal Squad personnel, and annual increments for Bihar Judicial Service officers in line with state government employees, with retrospective effect from January 1, 2016. Bihar assembly election is due later this year.
