Apco, Lepakshi announce design contest
The competition has been officially announced by Vishwa M, vice-chairman and managing director of Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation (APHDC), and is being jointly organised by Apco and Lepakshi, in collaboration with the National Institute of Design (NID), Vijayawada.
This initiative aims at fostering innovation among local weavers and artisans while preserving the cultural identity of Andhra Pradesh. It invites entries in ten traditional clusters—five each in handicrafts and handlooms—including Kondapally and Etikoppaka toys, leather puppetry, wood carvings, Kalamkari block prints, Dharmavaram and Uppada silks, Mangalagiri fabric, and more.
The handloom category also encourages development of utility-based products such as scarves, ties, shawls, and waistcoats. Announcing the competition, Vishwa M emphasised that the goal is to connect heritage with modern design sensibilities, offering creative individuals an opportunity to showcase Andhra's artisanal excellence on new platforms. The competition is open to all residents of Andhra Pradesh above the age of 18—artisans, students, designers, or independent creators.
A total of Rs 5 lakh in cash prizes will be awarded to 30 winners, with top entries selected based on innovation, craftsmanship, feasibility, and sustainability by a panel of judges from NID-AP, the Development Commissioner's Office, APCO, and Lepakshi. Participants are required to submit their physical souvenir samples to the nearest Lepakshi or APCO showroom by 16th July 16 within 30 days of the official launch on June 17. Collector receives ODOP award for Etikoppaka toys
Anakapalli: Etikoppaka toys, known for their craftsmanship, have gained recognition once again for its uniqueness. Etikoppaka lacquerware toys brought a rare honour to the district as it was selected for the 'One District - One Product (ODOP)' award. The award was received by Anakapalli District Collector Vijaya Krishnan at the recent award presentation ceremony organised under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi. Anakapalli District Collector Vijaya Krishnan received the prestigious award from Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector mentioned that the Etikoppaka toys have been recognised at the national level. She mentioned that the recognition has furthered the reputation of the lacquer toys. State BC Welfare and Handloom Minister S Savita and Commissioner G. Rekha Rani, and Special Chief Secretary for Handlooms and Textiles R.P. Sisodia participated in the programme.

Taiwanese students on internship explore cultural ecosystem at SPMVV
Tirupati: Aspart of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Impact Hub Hyderabad and Sri Padmavati Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) Tirupati, three Taiwanese students arrived in India for a three-month internship. The students, Chung Chia Hsuan (Sociology), Huang Chen Kai (Drama), and Yui Akiyama (Foreign Languages and Literature), are currently visiting SPMVV to explore its academic and cultural ecosystem. The trio met Vice-Chancellor Prof V Uma on a courtesy visit on Friday morning, where they were presented with certificates. Later, they participated in an interactive session with university students, sharing insights on Taiwanese culture, traditions, student support systems and academics while learning about Indian customs and student activities. The visiting students also toured the RAAS centre in the morning and are scheduled to visit Srikalahasti on Friday to understand the art of Kalamkari and its socio-economic benefits. The programme is aimed at exposing them to India's entrepreneurial landscape, with plans to adapt best practices back home. Registrar Prof N Rajani, Dean of International Relations Prof P Vijaya Lakshmi, Associate Dean Prof R Usha, and Dr U Himabindu of the department of Music and Prof P Josthna participated in the programme.

‘ODOP awards' credit goes to coalition govt'
Penukonda (Sri Sathya Sai district): BC welfare, EWS welfare, handlooms and textiles minister S Savitha said out of the 10 One Dostrict One Produicts awards bagged by the state, seven are handloom and handicraft products. Speaking to media at her camp office here on Sunday, sheexpressed her delight, noting that achieving 10 national-level ODOP recognitions within just one year of the coalition government under Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is a matter of pride. Savitha said on the occasion of National Handloom Day (August 7), the government will implement the free electricity scheme for weavers: 200 free units for those using traditional looms and 500 free units for power loom operators. She also announced that Thrift Fund benefits will be released on the same day, reaffirming the government's commitment to its election promises made by CM Chandrababu Naidu and minister Lokesh. Currently, there are 97 APCO showrooms across the state. Savitha announced that more showrooms are in the pipeline and e-commerce sales have already been initiated to boost handloom product visibility and support weavers' livelihoods. 'These initiatives are not just about awards,' the minister said. 'They are about preserving tradition, improving livelihoods, and bringing Andhra Pradesh to the forefront in handlooms, handicrafts, and agricultural excellence.'
