Ground Air India Boeing jets pending safety audit: Plea in top court after crash
Naming the central government, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and Air India as parties, the plea alleges that civil aviation rules are not being properly followed on commercial flights.Calling it a violation of Article 21 of the Constitution, the petitioner argues that the safety and security of passengers is a matter of the fundamental right to life.In the interim, the plea urges the court to "suspend operation of Boeing aircraft of Air India, pending a safety audit within two weeks, in view of the recent crash and reported maintenance backlogs."advertisementThe petition also calls for the DGCA to audit the fleets of all Indian airlines, including Air India, and publish the findings. It asks that fines be imposed on airlines found in violation of safety regulations. The PIL demands that the government be directed to create new guidelines for periodic inspections of aircraft engines, airframes, and cabin systems. The plea also cites passenger complaints reported on social media about faulty seats and malfunctioning air conditioning. The petitioner argues that aircraft with such complaints should not be allowed to fly.In his petition, Bansal cited his experience on an Air India business class flight from Delhi to Chicago on May 20. He claimed the seats did not recline, entertainment systems weren't working, and air conditioning was faulty. He said the airline later offered him Rs 10,000 as compensation. The Supreme Court is yet to list the matter for hearing.- EndsWith PTI inputs

Justice Varma Cash Row: Govt Moves To Build Consensus On Removal Motion, Signature Drive Soon
A formal committee will be constituted once the requisite number of signatures from Members of Parliament is obtained to move the motion in either House. The government has begun reaching out to key political parties to build consensus on initiating a removal motion against Justice Yashwant Varma, sources told News18. The move comes in the wake of an in-house committee report that reportedly indicted the Delhi High Court judge over the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash at his residence following a fire incident on March 14. A formal process to collect signatures from MPs to move the motion in Parliament is likely to begin next week, senior officials said. While the term 'impeachment" is technically reserved for the removal of a President, the procedure for removing a High Court judge involves a similar process under Article 217 read with Article 124(4) of the Constitution. According to sources, the government will follow the established legal framework and initiate the next steps accordingly. A formal committee will be constituted once the requisite number of signatures from Members of Parliament is obtained to move the motion in either House. According to sources, VP Jagdeep Dhankhar, too, is likely to give a ruling in the case soon. Panel Report Calls for Resignation The in-house panel, comprising Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia, and Karnataka High Court's Justice Anu Sivaraman, submitted its findings to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on May 4. The committee was formed on March 25, days after firefighters allegedly stumbled upon large sums of unaccounted cash while responding to a fire at Justice Varma's Delhi home. Sources cited in a Bar & Bench report said the findings of the committee were damning and recommended that Justice Varma be given the option to resign immediately. If he refuses, the report will be forwarded to the President of India, triggering the formal process for judicial removal. This development marks a rare and serious moment for the Indian judiciary, with the government now poised to initiate one of the most stringent constitutional processes available for judicial accountability. Cong will ban RSS once it comes to power: Priyank Kharge
Bengaluru: After claiming that Congress will ban RSS once it comes to power in the Centre, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge continued attacking the organisation on Wednesday, saying that it is 'cancer' and the BJP's love towards it is 'superficial'. Priyank Kharge, the Minister for RDPR, IT and BT, is the son of AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge. Priyank Kharge stated on Wednesday that, 'Following my remarks regarding a possible ban on the RSS, BJP leaders, including state President B.Y. Vijayendra and MLA V. Sunil Kumar, have been issuing various statements. Let the BJP not forget that there is a cure for the cancer that is RSS - an organisation that threatens national unity, the national anthem, the national flag, and the Constitution - and that cure lies within the Constitution itself.' 'For BJP leaders, defending the RSS is absolutely essential - to safeguard their positions and to secure their political future - because they are all tethered to Nagpur. Even if they dislike it, they are compelled to defend the RSS,' he said. The minister said, 'The BJP's love for the RSS is only superficial - it resides in their throats, not in their hearts. If their admiration were genuine, BJP leaders would be sending their own children to RSS shakhas instead of schools. Not a single BJP leader's child wears RSS shorts and plays with lathis at a shakha. Even the BJP knows that associating their children with the RSS would ruin their futures.' 'If Prime Minister Narendra Modi were to suddenly launch a campaign like 'Selfie with Shakha' for BJP leaders' children, even the RSS would come to know the truth of their loyalty. It would be good if respected Vijayendra and other BJP leaders acknowledged the historical truth that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had banned the RSS, considering it a terrorist organisation,' he claimed. 'Even if one doesn't fear mobs or violence, one must fear the Constitution of this country. Vijayendra, Sunil Kumar -- in this nation, the Constitution is the ultimate authority. My challenge to the BJP: As the RSS prepares to celebrate its centenary, let it list just 10 contributions it has made to the country over the past 100 years,' he challenged. Slamming Priyank Kharge for his statement on the RSS ban, state President Vijayendra stated, 'The Congress party's intolerance, hatred, and frustration toward the RSS will not harm the organisation in any way. Since the time of Nehru, the RSS has firmly withstood Congress' threats and attacks. So what weight do immature individuals like Priyank Kharge carry?'
