The 3 romantic comedies that Lena Dunham can't live without – that you can watch now

Time Outa day ago
From Girls to a girl, Lena Dunham's new Netflix show is a salty, sharply observed romantic comedy about a dreamy New Yorker, Jess (Megan Stalter), who moves to London hoping to find love amid a Merchant Ivory fantasia of posh country estates and men in Georgian finery. Instead, she finds herself navigating Hackney estates, coked-fuelled west London parties, and media hipsterdom with chilled-yet-complex indie musician Felix (Will Sharpe). True love, it turns out, is a path littered with trustafarian eco-warriors and snooty French exes.
Like its protagonist, Too Much is a show with a burning love for the genre, with frequent nods to romcoms from Pretty Woman to Richard Curtis. The door from Notting Hill even makes a cameo appearance.
But what are the romantic comedies that make Too Much 's own writer-director weak at the knees? We asked Dunham to pick her three favourites.
3. Bye Bye Birdie (1963)
'It doesn't seem like a romantic comedy, but it is: a musical romantic comedy. I've watched it again and again – it was one of the first times I was just rooting for the love story. I'm sure someone will say it doesn't count, but I defy you not to cry at the love story with Janet Leigh. And I defy you not to cry at watching Kim and Hugo find their way to each other after Conrad Birdie messes the whole town up.'
2. My Best Friend's Wedding (1997)
'I love it because it's romantic, it's unexpected and it tells the age-old story of women and their gay best friends in a beautiful way. That, for me, is the true love story of that movie. I like that it's taking the genre and upending it a little bit. And the cast is to die for.'
1. Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
'Number one for me is a Working Title special. It's about when [a movie first] hits you and when I saw Four Weddings, I thought it doesn't get better than this. I wanted to be with these smart, funny, complicated people. I wanted to go to four weddings and one funeral. I wanted to do it all. Also, it's the OG of American girl/British man [relationship dynamic], which is what I'm going for [in my life].'

Rita Ora says she still feels her 'great friend' Liam Payne's presence nine months after his tragic death as she reveals whether she'll watch his final TV appearance

Rita Ora has shared that she still feels Liam Payne 's presence nine months after his death, as she described him as a 'great friend'. The How We Do singer, 34, spoke candidly about the One Direction star in an interview on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show. Rita admitted she does still think about him from time to time, which keeps the memory alive, after he passed away in Argentina towards the end of last year. She is currently in New York after headlining an exclusive concert on Friday to mark the start of Wimbledon 's weekend-long US takeover for the fourth year running. The star has been getting around the Big Apple on the subway, pictured making her way to Brooklyn over the weekend. During her time in the states, she appeared on the radio show, where she was asked if she will watch an upcoming reality series that features the late singer. The singer tragically passed away in Argentina towards the end of last year (pictured) and his friend Rita says she still thinks about him from time to time Host Elvis asked whether she will watch Building the Band, a new show and Liam's final project - which wrapped filming shortly before he passed away. The first four episodes aired on Netflix earlier this week, with three more episodes due to drop on July 16. Rita responded: 'I 100% will watch it. That's a really great friend of mine. I still sort of feel him anyway, so it's fine.' She continued: 'I have the last song that I think we did together as a duo and I sing it all the time. And it just feels like he's just right there. And we always do a cute little moment of a photo of him and it feels fantastic to just feel like he's still around through music. 'That's why music is so powerful. It really does bring back a person, a memory, a feeling. 'So yeah, I have this incredible memory with him, with For You, our song together, and I'll always have that.' Liam died aged 31 on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was found to have alcohol and cocaine in his system. Just a month after Liam's death, Rita hosted the MTV EMAs and paid a special tribute to her friend. Pop powerhouse Rita brought the energy to The Hill in New York on Friday night, headlining an exclusive concert In fun snaps she shared on Instagram, Rita playfully rummaged through her designer bag for some hand wipes, admitting in the comments she was reluctant to hold onto the subway's pole Fighting back tears, she emotionally said to the cameras: 'I just want to take a moment to remember someone that was very, very dear to us. 'We lost him recently, and he was a big part of the MTV world and my world, and I think a lot of yours at home and everybody in here tonight. Liam Payne was one of the kindest people that I knew. 'And, you know, there were so many ways that we were talking about honouring him, and I think sometimes just simply speaking is enough.' Rita showcased her toned midriff in a skimpy white top as she travelled on the subway while exploring Brooklyn earlier this week. Jill Scott picks out England 'difference maker' as Lionesses eye Euro 2025 glory

INTERVIEW: England legend Jill Scott has lavished Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses in praise as they seek to book their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2025 with victory over Wales on Sunday Lauren James has the class to make the difference for England this summer - but Leah Williamson and Hannah Hampton are also worth their weight in gold to Sarina Wiegman. That's the verdict of Lionesses legend Jill Scott as the Three Lions bid to book their place in the quarter-finals of the European Championships with victory against Wales on Sunday. Chelsea star James dazzled in the 4-0 demolition of the Netherlands, netting twice, and Scott is adamant the 23-year-old possesses the class to fire England to glory in Switzerland. She said: "Lauren has been brilliant. She's one of those players like Kelly Smith and Fran Kirby that can make something out of nothing. "As soon as she got half a yard on Wednesday, I was up off my seat because I knew it was flying in. Her technical ability is one of the best I've ever seen in the women's game. ‌ "She's grown so much since working under Emma Hayes at Chelsea, she can be the difference but in this team, the girls do their job roles to help her flourish." ‌ Scott, who was on set at Coronation Street yesterday for the FA's Big Football Day powered by The National Lottery, was not surprised to see England goalkeeper Hampton's stunning distribution on display against Holland. The 38-year-old also had huge praise for Lionesses captain Williamson as the Arsenal defender continues to showcase her quality. Scott continued: "Hannah's pass the other day reminded me of when I went on loan to Aston Villa. ‌ "At the time, I was totally in awe of her passing, it was the best I'd ever seen from a goalkeeper. "She almost has a sat nav on her foot, I was talking about it before the game and then to see that pass, wow! ‌ "We have to give her massive credit because she's come into the tournament with the weight of being England's No.1 which is the most pressurised position on the pitch, but she's taken it in her stride. "Leah is a massive player for both club and country, she has the ability to play in virtually any position on the pitch. "She always leads by example with her performances and it reflects throughout the team." ‌ Scott remains confident the defending champions can retain the trophy, adding: "Wales have done really well to qualify for their first tournament. "Their fans have also been superb but everyone expects England to win and I believe they can make the final. "You can't overlook Spain, they play amazing football but we've got results against them in the past. They wouldn't scare me but I think they deserve respect. "This is also one of the best French teams I've seen too, they would be the two nations I'd highlight but on their day, I think England can beat both of them." ‌ Scott, who won an incredible 161 caps for the Three Lions, spoke of her pride following her involvement in The National Lottery's Big Football Day. She concluded: "I don't think people realise that the National Lottery has invested £6billion into grassroots sport, something girl's football has benefited immensely from. ‌ "I'm a massive soap fan and to come down to Coronation Street, one of the most-iconic streets in the country, was something I had to come back from Switzerland for. "The growth of the women's game is really difficult to put into words, we've now built a fanbase that will be with the Lionesses through thick and thin."
