Pride Winnipeg disappointed with PCs after Official Opposition skips out on parade

Yahoo03-06-2025
The president of Pride Winnipeg says he's disappointed the Manitoba Progressive Conservative caucus did not participate formally in Sunday's Pride parade after taking part in every parade since 2017.
Pride Winnipeg president Barry Karlenzig said PC Leader Obby Khan and other PC MLAs did not sign up as an entry in the annual parade.
"It's disappointing to me because when the PCs were in power, we did receive the provincial grants to start Manitoba Pride Alliance and we were told they support the queer community," Karlenzig said Monday.
"This shows wholeheartedly that that was just speech. They don't support the community. If they supported the community, they would have been there to celebrate our diverse community."
The PCs formally entered all but one parade when Brian Pallister served as premier, both parades when Heather Stefanson was premier and in 2024, when interim leader Wayne Ewasko led the party.
Obby Khan, who won the PC leadership race in April, said Sunday's Pride parade "looked like it was a great time" but did not offer an explanation why he and his caucus did not walk in it.
"MLAs are free to attend if they want to attend. I don't know what every MLA's schedule was. I know my schedule was what it was," Khan said.
"Also, you know, I had a prior commitment. I wasn't invited and I don't want the story to be about me attending Pride. This is about communities, about a celebration. It's about communities about the rights and that's what we want to focus on."

Karlenzig said the PCs did not need an invitation to sign up for the parade. The only formal invitations were sent to the premier, mayor, prime minister and the grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, he said.
Karlenzig noted Stefanson even walked in the parade the one year she was asked not to speak at the Pride rally.
Khan said it's important to note the former PC government's financial support for both Pride Winnipeg and the Rainbow Resource Centre.
Earlier this spring, when he was running for PC leader, Khan also said he was not aware the term "parental rights" could have been perceived as a transphobic dog whistle during the 2023 provincial election campaign, when he served as the face of a PC "parental rights" campaign platform promise he described as an effort to combat bullying in schools.
"I was aware after the campaign, actually, that some people would use that as a dog whistle. It was not my intent at all. I don't believe in that at all," Khan said in an interview on March 7.
Khan said as a member of a visible minority, he has faced and continues to face discrimination and he feels strongly about the rights of every Manitoban.

Prime Minister Mark Carney attends Vancouver Pride parade after meeting with premier

VANCOUVER — Prime Minister Mark Carney surprised attendees at Vancouver's Pride parade Sunday after meeting with Premier David Eby and officials from the Vancouver port. Carney met with Vancouver Fraser Port Authority president and CEO Peter Xotta and DP World Canada chief operating officer Joel Werner in the morning, briefly appearing at a photo op with the two executives after pacing the port facility as a large container ship loomed above. The prime minister was then scheduled for a meeting with B.C. Premier David Eby that was closed to media as the province grapples with U.S. tariffs and renewed animosity in the long running softwood lumber dispute. Carney later surprised attendees at the Vancouver Pride parade, marching for about a kilometre along the route beginning outside B.C. Place Stadium. He says the Pride parade represents the "essence of Canada," celebrating diversity in a "very positive way." Carney was greeted by loud cheers from parade-goers lining the sidewalks along the route, and he zigzagged across the street several times to meet and greet supporters as his security detail followed closely. The prime minister at one point was handed a microphone by a drag queen who thanked him for coming, and Carney said the parade was "the best of Canada." Drag group promotes artists' rights as Florida AG demands info on Pride event

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Florida's Republican Attorney General James Uthmeier is demanding guest lists, surveillance footage and personal information from people who attended a drag Pride event in Vero Beach on June 29, according to Scott Simpson, organizer for Qommittee, a national volunteer network defending drag artists' rights. The group says that no laws were violated in the event, and Florida's statewide "drag ban" has been blocked by federal courts. But state officials are "weaponizing existing laws to bully, intimidate, and surveil our community," Simpson said. Simpson's group has publicized Floridians' rights and called for organizing. "This is serious government overreach designed to intimidate drag performers into silence," he said. "They want performers to stop performing. They want venues to stop booking drag shows. They want our community to stop gathering and celebrating who we are. "Going to a drag show should not mean you forfeit your anonymity or land your name in a government database," Simpson said. "We cannot let that happen. Every drag performer and venue in Florida must stay loud, stay proud, and protect themselves while continuing their art." This isn't the first attack on Vero Beach's drag community. Linda Moore, the vice mayor of Vero Beach, is being investigated by Uthmeier for a "Pride Tea Dance" held last month at the Kilted Mermaid, a wine bar she owns in the town on the Atlantic coast. But it's unclear what charges Moore might face and questions remain concerning Uthmeier's legal basis for the investigation. Uthmeier's office cited evidence that the event was promoted as being open to all ages and included sexualized adult performers who "wore revealing attire and burlesque outfits while interacting with the children." "In Florida, we don't sacrifice the innocence of children for the perversions of some demented adults," Uthmeier said in a statement. But Moore said the bar has hosted it for at least the past five years. "We have the event every year; it's our gay pride event, and it is all ages," Moore said. "It's a family-friendly event, and then once the drag show actually starts, we tell the parents who have small children that they can't stay for the show." Simpson's Qommittee website clarifies drag performers' rights and realities, as well as Florida's laws on drag shows open to all ages versus shows for adults only. It also tells performers how to protect themselves if they're targeted by government officials and to keep performing and keep showing up at drag shows. "This intimidation campaign wants us to self-censor out of fear," Simpson said. "We will not give them that victory."
