ITV Racing tips: Saturday May 3 – Newmarket, Goodwood and Thirsk

Telegraph02-05-2025
The ITV Racing cameras are at three of today's seven horse racing meetings to bring terrestrial viewers coverage of four races from the second day of Newmarket's Guineas Festival.
There's also one race from each of the meetings at Goodwood and Thirsk in the broadcast, which airs on ITV1 from 1.30-4.00pm. Our expert has picked a selection from each of the races at Newmarket.

1.45 Newmarket – Betfred Handicap (Class 2, 6f)
STANAGE switched stables from the Gosdens to the Easterbys last November and has been on the up in his two outings this year.
In March he won a Class 4 handicap over today's trip at Doncaster and last month he finished a useful third over course and distance in Class 2 company. He didn't get a smooth passage in the latter race and we think he could push the favourites and will finish at least in the first four here.
2.20 Newmarket – Suffolk Handicap (Class 2, 1m 1f)
HAND OF GOD looks a worthy favourite, having won each of his last three races – a sequence that began with victory over a mile here in 2023.
The lightly raced four-year-old won a pair of Class 2 races in 2024: the Esher Cup at Sandown in April and the Golden Gates Handicap at Ascot in June. Ryan Moore, who rode him in the first of those, returns in the saddle today.
2.55 Newmarket – Hong Kong Jockey Club Palace House Stakes (Group 3, 5f)
In what looks to be an open race over the minimum trip, we're banking on the age allowance for the three-year-old TROPICAL STORM to prove decisive.
Second in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, he ran disappointingly at Glorious Goodwood before bouncing back to win a Listed race at York and finish fourth in the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster in September. Oisin Murphy's mount is a threat to his older rivals here.
3.35 Newmarket – 2,000 Guineas (Group 1, 1m)
It's hard to look beyond the favourite FIELD OF GOLD in the first Classic of the English Flat season.
John and Thady Gosden's colt has won three of his five races, including a course-and-distance victory in the Group 3 Craven Stakes on his seasonal reappearance last month. That day he came from last to first to win by three and a half lengths from Wimbledon Hawkeye, one of his 10 rivals here.
Two runners come here with Group 1 wins to their names. Ruling Court won the Middle Park Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes here last autumn, over six and seven furlongs respectively, with Expanded a neck behind him in the latter. Scorthy Champ won the National Stakes at The Curragh in September.

2025 Shanghai Masters Snooker schedule, how to watch, prize money and odds

The Shanghai Masters gets underway on Monday at the Luwan Gymnasium, with the world's best snooker players battling it out for the prestigious title. The top 16 in the world make it into the Shanghai Masters and they are joined by the four highest ranked Chinese players outside that elite group, plus four local wildcards. Judd Trump lifted the trophy last season, beating Shaun Murphy in the final and the world number one will be looking to claim back-to-back titles. Ronnie O'Sullivan had made the event his own before Trump's victory last year, winning four editions of the Shanghai Masters on the spin. There is no shortage of contenders for the silverware, including new world champion Zhao Xintong, who will be playing for the first time since his Crucible triumph. The likes of Kyren Wilson, Mark Selby, John Higgins and Ding Junhui have all tasted success in Shanghai before and would love to replicate that on Sunday. One change to the draw since it was made saw Ali Carter replace Mark Allen as the Northern Irishman withdrew due to personal reasons. The tournament runs from July 28 – August 3. 'It was probably one of the best performances I've ever produced in a whole event. Nobody really got close to me that week. 'It sets you up for the whole season. When you get off to a quick start it puts you in a good position. I then won in Saudi straight away after. You are so relaxed after getting the first win. This is important for everyone. It is the first event that all of the top players enter. You don't know what to expect as you aren't match sharp. But it is important to put the work in so you come out strongly.' Prince William and Princess Charlotte spotted at Euros final cheering on England

Prince William and Princess Charlotte have been spotted cheering on England's women football team at the Euros final. The Prince of Wales and his 10-year-old daughter travelled to Basel, Switzerland, to support the team during their final clash with Spain. The match, broadcast live on both BBC One and ITV1, comes after England beat Italy 2-1 in the semi-final in Geneva on Tuesday evening. On Saturday, William, who is patron of the FA, sent a special message to the Lionesses. He wrote on X: "Good luck to the Lionesses tomorrow. The nation is so proud you are through to the final, after some stunning comebacks! We are all cheering you on! W." In a show of support ahead of the final, the Band of the Grenadier Guards performed Three Lions on the Buckingham Palace forecourt, while the Royal Family's official X account posted: "Wishing the very best of luck to the Lionesses in the Women's Euro Final this evening." The King and Queen also wished the team their "warmest congratulations" after the semi-final earlier this week. Charles said: "Knowing the Lionesses' fighting spirit, I suspect we are in for another thrilling encounter on Sunday. "Your achievements continue to inspire countless girls and women across the nation, proving once again that with dedication and teamwork, anything is possible. Good luck, England. May you roar to victory once more. Charles R." Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said: "Into the final and inspiring the nation. Let's bring it home." Meanwhile, cricketer Joe Root wished the Lionesses' the "very best of luck" in an online message, adding: "It's been great to watch you play throughout the tournament." Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson said the team has "absolutely smashed it," adding that "everybody is so proud of you". The Lionesses will be looking for redemption against Spain, who edged them 1-0 in the 2023 Women's World Cup final. England boss Sarina Wiegman said the team is "going to do everything we can to win it" and she would prefer to avoid a "nerve-wracking" match.

Royal Champion too good for Almaqam in York Stakes

Trained by Karl Burke and ridden by Clifford Lee, the Sheikh Mohammed Obaid-owned seven-year-old started at 8-1 as the market revolved around Ed Walker's 6-4 favourite Almaqam. Lee kept his mount in a handy position and was happy to bide his time as the race developed, and though Almaqam did hit his stride late on he was no match for Royal Champion as he strode to a career-best two-and-three-quarter-length win. 'He's cantered round, they all seemed to be coming off it (the bridle) while he was still travelling well,' said Burke. Royal Champion puts the race to bed! 🔥 An emphatic winner of the Sky Bet York Stakes!🥇#ITVRacing | @yorkracecourse | @CliffordleexLee | @karl_burke — ITV Racing (@itvracing) July 26, 2025 'Cliff said that's the best he's ever picked up and quickened. He was working nicely, but he always works nicely – I thought that was a massive step up on what he's done, they can't all have run bad races, can they? 'He was always travelling strongly and when Cliff pushed the button he just picked up. 'There are not that many races to go for with him, he's won his Group Three and you're always looking to step up. 'This looked a nice race, it's York and it's local, I was hoping the ground would be a bit quicker, but he's handled that. 'We were hoping for a good run. We've had winners (recently), but there's been a few just not quite going our way. 'We haven't had a lot of luck for Sheikh Obaid lately, so it is nice to get a Group Two for him.' Of next steps for the seven-year-old, Burke added: 'I'll have to talk to the owner and see if he wants to supplement him for the Juddmonte International after that performance, we'll have a good chat. 'He was second in Woodbine for Roger Varian (in the Canadian International Stakes), that could be a nice Group One to go for. 'He's a lovely horse and he goes on the all-weather as well, hopefully he's a horse we can campaign around the world. 'Why not go to the Irish Champion Stakes? He owes us nothing, but I'll have to chat to the owner.'
