AI Videos Push Combs Trial Misinformation, Researchers Say
The flood of false content threatens to distort public perception of the musician's seven-week New York trial, where jurors were deliberating Tuesday to ascertain whether he acted as the ringleader of a criminal organization that facilitated coercive sex marathons with escorts.
The sensational AI-driven channels have amassed nearly 70 million views from roughly 900 videos about the musician over the past year, according to data compiled by Indicator, a US publication investigating digital deception.
The videos typically feature AI-generated thumbnails showing celebrities on the witness stand alongside images of Diddy, often paired with fabricated quotes.
One channel called Pak Gov Update uploaded a nearly 30-minute-long video titled "Jay-Z Breaks His Silence on Diddy Controversy," which features a thumbnail of the American rapper.
The thumbnail shows Jay-Z breaking down in tears and holding up a CD above a fabricated quote: "I WILL BE DEAD SOON."
Pak Gov Update has uploaded similar videos with fake testimonies attributed to other celebrities such as the American comedian Kevin Hart and the singer and songwriter Usher.
It began posting content about the closely watched trial in recent weeks. The channel previously posted Urdu content about Pakistan.
"Pak Gov Update is one of 26 YouTube channels identified by Indicator that have used a mix of false claims and AI slop to cash in on the Diddy trial," said Craig Silverman, co-founder of Indicator.
YouTube did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment.
AI slop refers to often low-quality visual content -- generated using cheap and widely available artificial intelligence tools -- that increasingly appears to be flooding social media sites, blurring the lines between reality and fiction.
Many content creators on YouTube and TikTok offer paid courses on how to monetize viral AI slop on tech platforms, many of which have reduced their reliance on human fact-checkers and scaled back content moderation.
Combs, 55, faces life in prison if convicted on five federal charges that include racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation for purposes of prostitution.
Conspiracy theories and falsehoods surrounding his trial have flooded social media sites in recent weeks, threatening to shroud the facts and undermine real witnesses, experts say.
A song titled "I Lost Myself at a Diddy Party" and falsely attributed to Justin Bieber recently garnered millions of views across social media platforms, sparking a wave of conspiracy theories about the relationship between the two celebrities.
An audio clip of the song, which features lyrics about Bieber losing his innocence after attending one of Combs's parties, was likely created using an AI tool, according to the disinformation watchdog NewsGuard.
Also gaining traction online was a manipulated image of Combs and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein sitting next to US President Donald Trump on a couch with young women.

Rescue teams in Pakistan worked in searing heat and humidity on Saturday to recover residents trapped under the rubble of a building that collapsed, killing 16 people. Authorities said the building had been declared unsafe and eviction notices were sent to occupants over three years, but landlords and some residents told AFP they had not received them. Residents reported hearing cracking sounds shortly before the apartment block crumbled around 10:00 am on Friday in Karachi's impoverished Lyari neighbourhood, which was once plagued by gang violence and considered one of the most dangerous areas in Pakistan. The death toll stood at 16 on Saturday, with 13 injured, according to Summiaya Syed, a police surgeon for the provincial health department. "My daughter is under the rubble," 54-year-old Dev Raj told AFP at the scene. "She was my beloved daughter. She was so sensitive but is under the burden of debris. She got married just 6 months ago." Rescue teams worked throughout the night, and families said that at least eight people were still believed to be trapped as temperatures climbed to 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday morning. A senior district government official, Javed Nabi Khoso, said that notices had been served in 2022, 2023 and 2024 to occupants. "We don't want to impose our orders by force. We work in phases and send them notices to leave the building. They didn't take the notices seriously," he told AFP. But Imran Khaskheli, an owner and resident watching the rescue operation on Saturday, denied receiving notices. "Do you think we are out of our senses to stay in an unsafe building with our families?" he said. He told AFP he had seen cracks in the pillars of the building early on Friday morning. "I knocked on all the doors and asked families to leave immediately," he said, adding that around 40 families lived in the building but that many did not heed his warning. More than 50 buildings in the district have been declared unsafe, with six evacuated since yesterday, according to Khoso. Abid Jalaluddin Shaikh, leading the government's 1122 rescue service at the scene, told AFP the operation was expected to continue into Saturday evening. Many of the victims are believed to be women, who are more likely to be at home during the day. All six members of 70-year-old Jumho Maheshwari's family were in their first-floor apartment when he left for work early in the morning. "Nothing is left for me now -- my family is all trapped and all I can do is pray for their safe recovery," he said on Friday. Another resident, Maya Sham Jee, told AFP her brother's family was also trapped under the rubble. "It's a tragedy for us. The world has been changed for our family," she said. "We are helpless and just looking at the rescue workers to bring our loved ones back safely." Shankar Kamho, a 30-year-old resident, was out at the time when his wife called to say the building was cracking. "I told her to get out immediately," he told AFP. "She went to warn the neighbours, but one woman told her 'this building will stand for at least 10 more years'," he said. "Still, my wife took our daughter and left. About 20 minutes later, the building collapsed." British pop legends Oasis kicked off a hotly anticipated worldwide reunion tour in Cardiff on Friday, commencing an unlikely comeback few thought possible nearly 16 years after last performing together. Dozens Hurt In Fuel Station Blast Heard Across Rome
A huge explosion at a petrol station in a Rome suburb on Friday injured nearly 30 people, two of them seriously, and rattled windows across the Italian capital. The blast around 8:20am (0620 GMT) was preceded by a fire caused by a gas leak during refuelling, according to Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, who provided the toll of injured. Gualtieri visited the charred and smoking remains of the petrol and liquified natural gas (LNG) station and an adjacent sports centre in the Prenestino neighbourhood of eastern Rome. The explosion sent a fireball and thick black smoke into the air, and was heard on the other side of Rome, shaking windows and causing some residents to worry that a bomb had gone off. "The explosion was really powerful. I felt my skin burning," Michele Seco, a 23-year-old who worked at the now-destroyed sports centre, told AFP. Before the explosion, emergency services and police were called to investigate the gas leak and had evacuated the immediate area, including a children's summer camp. Police said 10 of their officers and one member of the fire service were injured, in addition to 16 civilians, two of whom were in a serious but not life-threatening condition. Fabio Balzani, head of the sports centre, said if the fire had occurred just a bit later it could have been disastrous, with 60 children expected at the camp and around 120 people booked to use the pool. "It would have been a massacre, a catastrophe," he told AFP. Andrea Quattrocchi, the local chief of the Carabinieri police force, said the timely intervention of his team was crucial. "They extracted a person alive from a burning car," who was taken to hospital and is in a serious but stable condition, Quattrocchi told reporters. Witnesses said an ambulance exploded in the fire. Ennio Aquilino, regional director of the Lazio fire department, said the petrol station explosion was caused by a "BLEVE" -- a boiling liquid expanding vapour explosion -- of the liquified natural gas. A BLEVE is caused by the rapid vaporisation of a pressurised liquid, normally when the vessel containing it is ruptured in some way. "The effect is as if a bomb has gone off," Aquilino told reporters. He said the first call to firefighters had been for a gas leak, then shortly afterwards came the explosion. He said they did not have time to stop it, only to clear the area. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was following the situation, and offered her support for all those injured.
