Marlins claim Tyler Zuber off waivers from Mets, designate Nick Nastrini for assignment

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Miami Marlins claimed reliever Tyler Zuber off waivers from the New York Mets and designated fellow right-hander Nick Nastrini for assignment before their game against the Reds on Wednesday night.
The 30-year-old Zuber, who was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, allowed two runs in two innings in his only appearance for the Mets. He appeared in two games for Tampa Bay last season but has not been a regular in the big leagues since 2021, when Zuber went 0-3 with a 6.26 ERA in 31 appearances for Kansas City.
The Marlins had claimed Nastrini off waivers from the White Sox just over a week ago. He appeared in one game for Jacksonville, allowing two runs on four walks and three hit batters in only two innings of work.
The 25-year-old Nastrini is 0-7 with a 7.07 ERA in nine career big league appearances.

56-year-old Dustin Rhodes wins AEW gold in his home state

The crowd in Globe Life Field, and the AEW announcers and wrestlers on our screen, were still processing Adam Cole's possible retirement announcement from moments before. But the show must go on, and a new TNT champion needed to be crowned after Cole vacated. Cole's originally scheduled opponent Kyle Fletcher was a part of the 4-way for the vacant belt, as was previous champ Daniel Garcia. Both Garcia and his mentor Matt 'Daddy Magic' Menard shared a moment with Cole during their entrance. Three-time TNT titleholder Sammy Guevara was also in the match, along with the man he holds the ROH Tag titles with, Dustin Rhodes. That duo was in their second match of the night, after winning an 8-man on the pre-show. Rhodes and Guevara, together known as Sons of Texas, worked together on occasion, and didn't work against each other, including during a bit of fun where all three babyfaces hit Dustin's Unnatural Kick/Shattered Dreams on the favorite Fletcher. But their alliance broke down after Sammy inadvertently hit a corner drop kick on his partner. Garcia tried to take advantage of that, setting off a sequence that would end when Guevara took out Fletcher with a cutter as Garcia locked his partner in a Dragontamer. But Dustin was able to reverse the hold and roll the younger man up for a win, taking his first AEW gold in his home state at 56-years-old. The Texans in attendance loved it, as did the ones who came into celebrate with Rhodes, his nephews Wayne & Wyatt Rhodes and his trios partners Ross & Marshall Von Erich. A call that will be debated online, but felt right given what it followed. Fletcher will be champ soon, but All In Texas was Dustin Rhodes time. Padres Make Unexpected Jackson Merrill Decision Before Diamondbacks Game

Padres Make Unexpected Jackson Merrill Decision Before Diamondbacks Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Outfielder Jackson Merrill is entering his second season as a member of the San Diego Padres. The 22-year-old was selected in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Padres and, after debuting last year, quickly established himself as both a star and a foundational building block for the franchise. Advertisement Merrill was drafted as a middle infielder—a role he'd played throughout his amateur and minor-league career—but during spring training, with Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts locking up the left side of the infield, San Diego asked him to learn the outfield. He embraced the challenge and found a way to excel at his new position immediately. During his rookie campaign, Merrill finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting, earned his first All-Star selection, and even placed ninth in MVP voting. His combination of defensive versatility and emerging power made him one of the most exciting young talents in baseball. San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill (3)Kim Klement Neitzel-USA TODAY Sports In his second season, Merrill has not maintained the elite performance levels he reached in 2024. Advertisement Ahead of Thursday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, manager Mike Shildt made the decision to move Merrill down to sixth in the batting order—the lowest spot he has occupied all season. Through 60 games in 2025, Merrill is batting .263 with a .717 OPS, marking a significant drop-off from his breakout year. His power numbers have regressed as well: he has hit only five home runs this season compared to the 29 he smashed in 2024. With the All-Star break approaching, the Padres sit at 49-43, just one game out of a wild-card spot. For San Diego to maintain its postseason push, a big rebound in the second half from Merrill will be essential.
