Job losses as Dundee games company liquidated
One of Dundee's first phone games specialists Cobra Mobile has been liquidated.
The firm faced a number of extreme difficulties in the run-up to its collapse, including partner companies going bust and the death of chairman Peter Mackintosh last year.
A total of eight staff have been made redundant as a result.
Cobra Mobile are regarded as pioneers of the mobile games industry in the city, being one of the first to recognise the markets' potential ahead of the ubiquity of smartphones.
It was founded in 2005 by Mark Ettle, and produced games sold in their millions globally including Storm In A Teacup and iBomber.
As well as selling on Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store, Cobra Mobile also made games for platforms like Steam and Nintendo.
Mark told The Courier a series of bad outcomes had contributed to Cobra Mobile's liquidation.
He said: 'It has been a really sad combination of events. There is the recent sudden death of our chairman Peter Mackintosh.
'We have had clients go bankrupt on us during projects, leaving us hugely in debt.
'There has been a downturn in the sector, which has made it harder for us to operate moving forward with the roadmap we wanted to follow.
'This has all hit us at the same time.
'It is really sad, but it has been a fun ride too for the last 20 years.'
Cobra Mobile won numerous accolades, including a European Gams Award and were nominated for multiple BAFTAs.
An in 2008 the company greeted the arrival of the iPhone and the App Store, having switched their focus from developing for Java based mobile phones.
'We have made a tonne of great games,' Mark added.
'And we've won lots of awards and been nominated for loads more. We had business commendations for the way we operated and worked.
'But there are things in business you simply don't control and events you cannot foresee.
'And there is a downturn in the industry right now. This is not an isolated event.
'We had one thing on top of another — a cascading waterfall of bad outcomes.'
Steven Wright of Glasgow company Dains Accountants has been appointed as the interim liquidator of Cobra Mobile.
The company's eight employees will be helped through the redundancy process, a spokesperson for Dains said.

Charli XCX hits back at 'fraud' claims after Glastonbury set criticised
Charli XCX has hit back at claims she is a "fraud" after her Glastonbury Festival headline set was heavily criticised. The Apple singer was headlining the Other stage Saturday evening, with a packed out crowd there to sing and dance with her. However, Charli came under criticism for her set, with many convinced she was miming or using autotune. She referenced the "boomer vibe" comments on her set in a string of Twitter posts. She wrote on X: "Like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a 'real artist' is like, the most boring take ever. yawn sorry just fell asleep xx "But to be honest… i enjoy the discourse. imo the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of ok, easily understood and sort of forgettable." She then added: "really enjoying these boomer vibe comments on my glastonbury performance. it's super fascinating to me," before thanking those who gave her five star reviews. During her big set, Charli XCX sang her song with Icona Pop, I Love It, as well her hit viral song Apple, which Gracie Abrams acted as the Apple Girl for and danced the TikTok routine. The singer was accused by fans of miming during her performance, where she headlined the Other stage on Saturday night, whilst Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts performed on Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage. At the same time, the Scissors Sisters were performing on the Woodsies stage - and the venue had to be shut down as there were too many people there. Taking to Twitter/X, some fans blasted the singer. One wrote: "Oh ffs can't watch Scissor Sisters and Charli XCX is bloody dreadful. Could literally be any random person miming. WTF for a Glastonbury Saturday night, disappointing." Another added: "Predictable but shame nonetheless that charli xcx can't sing live #Glastonbury2025 #charlixcx FAKE." And a third said: "Charli xcx Embarressing [sic]that, turning up to walk around stage pretending to sing…" Whilst some weren't keen on her set, others loved it. "Charli xcx the icon you are #Glastonbury2025," one wrote, whilst a second added: "Charli xcx killing it." A third penned: "Charli xcx is taking over Glasto, she's bloody amazing."

She completed her look with dark thigh-high boots and a pair of sunglasses despite the night-time surroundings, styling her hair into waves over her shoulders. Charli opened her set with a quip of " you ready" before launching into hit 365 before following up with 360. She rattled through 17 tracks before wrapping up shortly before midnight yet despite the songstress' fashion credentials - and signature green brat backdrop screen with flashing lights - some were less than impressed. They accused her of miming and suggested an excessive use of autotune in tracks such as I Might Say Something Stupid. After watching the set from their sofas on the BBC one took to X to write: "Just miming to her own records." A second put: "Headline act at #Glastonbury2025 #Glasto is miming. Absolutely terrible," as a third wrote: "Charli XCX miming her way thru every song at Glastonbury, her mic only used for the odd 'Come On' shout. Live should be live." One then put: "Is @charli_xcx lip syncing." Another confessed: "Will NEVER understand the Charli XCX hype. Either miming, auto tune or talking." A fan then posted: "Has Charli XCX sung a single lyric yet?" Pulp takes swipe at Charli XCX during surprise Glastonbury performance Yet others loved the party vibe the beauty brought to Glasto. One mused: "Loving that Charli xcx and the 1975 have got all middle aged men in tears this weekend, can't wait for Olivia Rodrigo!!" Another wrote: "Dude… Charli XCX was f**king class." One then put: "How cool is Charli xcx" Glastonbury 2025 - confirmed acts so far TICKETS to the 2025 festival sold out in just minutes before some of the acts were even confirmed. Here is who has been confirmed so far. Confirmed headliners: The 1975 will take to the Pyramid Stage on Friday. Neil Young will headline the festival for the second time after his last set in 2009 on Saturday after RAYE makes her return. Charli xcx will headline the Other Stage on Saturday night. On Sunday, Olivia Rodrigo is due to belt out her hits for her first appearance while Rod Stewart will perform in the legends slot. More acts to appear on the Other Stage include Loyle Carner and The Prodigy. Doechii will make her Glastonbury debut on the West Holts Stage on Saturday night. Other names confirmed include Noah Kahan, Alanis Morissette, Gracie Abrams, Busta Rhymes, Lola Young, Brandi Carlile, Myles Smith, En Vogue, Amaarae, Cymande, Shaboozey, Osees and Gary Numan. The Sun has gone to Charli's reps for comment. SHOCK SWIPE Prior to her set, Charli faced an unexpected calling out from secret "Patchwork" act Pulp. The Britpop icons, fronted by Jarvis Cocker, had ramped up speculation for their set by not appearing on the line-up – instead choosing to go by a mystery name for a secret set. However, it had long been speculated it was actually Pulp, with piece of their equipment appearing backstage seeming to give the game away. At 6.15pm, the Pyramid stage filled with nearly 100 people dressed in black and white ponchos as the band was finally revealed. Taking a swipe at Charli XCX, who is headlining the Other Stage later tonight, a screen behind the band flashed the words "Are you ready for.... Pulp Summer." The message was a direct reference to the 'Brat Summer' Charli celebrated last year thanks to her smash-hit album. 6 Charli's iconic brat phrase was emblazoned on the screen Credit: Getty 6 Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker also unexpectedly called out the chart star Credit: Shutterstock Editorial

Trade war escalates: Canada hikes duties as Trump halts negotiations
The response came hours after Trump posted on Truth Social about how Canada is a 'very difficult country to trade with.' His reason for suspending trade negotiations came down to a tax Canada is set to impose on major tech companies starting Monday. 'Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,' Trump wrote, adding that the levy 'is a direct and blatant attack on our Country.' Last week, the finance minister said he would not delay the implementation of the digital services tax, which applies to any firm making more than $15 million from Canadian internet users. The three percent tax will strike at the heart of American companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber and Airbnb. And because the tax is retroactive back to 2022, one tech lobbying group said American firms will soon have to pay up to $3 billion directly into Canada's treasury. Canada has not ruled out further action to strike back at Trump for ending negotiations, with the government saying it 'remains prepared to take additional steps as needed.' How Canada's hike on US steel imports will affect the industry, which has been struggling for years, is yet to be seen. US Steel Corporation, once one of the most valuable companies in the world, just merged with Japan's Nippon Steel earlier this month after years of declining sales. Canada is also hugely impacted by Trump's 50 percent tax on steel and aluminum imports, as the country is largest foreign supplier of those materials to the US. Canada's steel industry has laid off a staggering 1,000 workers since the first US tariffs in March, Reuters reported. It has also been impacted by the 25 percent duties Trump has levied on foreign-made vehicles and parts.
