Familiar face to return for new series of The Young Offenders

Irish Examiner21-05-2025
Rumours of the return of The Young Offenders have been circulating for weeks, but now it has been confirmed that the much-loved Cork-set show will indeed be back for a fifth season, complete with more scenes featuring one of the original stars.
Chris Walley (Jock) was barely seen in the last series as he had other filming commitments, but the Glanmire actor is back in a full role for the new run. His character will be rejoining his old mate Conor (Alex Murphy), and the rogue-ish duo have even more in common this time around, having both spent time in prison.
Stalwarts such as Hilary Rose (Mairéad), Shane Casey (Billy Murphy), and Demi Isaac (Linda) also return for the six-part series that's soon to begin production in Cork.
The series is again produced by Vico Films, and is commissioned by the BBC, in association with RTÉ.

Jon Petrie, BBC director of comedy, said the British broadcaster was thrilled to reunite Conor and Jock in Cork. 'This fifth series is brimming with the wild heart, raucous charm and razor-sharp wit that have made The Young Offenders a true fan favourite,' said Petrie.
Peter Foott, who created the hugely-popular original film in 2016, is also delighted to be working on another series. 'We have the funniest, most heart-warming stories in the new season that will show Conor and Jock getting into scrapes like never before,' says the writer/director who is also working on an unrelated feature film set in Castlecove, Co Kerry.
While lead roles in The Young Offenders are already filled, the producers are still casting for a few characters, and have invited applicants to submit an audition via corkcasting.com.
Meanwhile, BBC has confirmed it has commissioned another Irish drama series, with filming already under way on an adaptation of Rónán Hession's novel, Leonard and Hungry Paul.
Jamie-Lee O'Donnell is to feature in the cast of Leonard And Hungry Paul.
The Dublin author received widespread praise and a slew of awards following the 2019 publication of the endearing tale of two board-gaming friends. The cast for the six-part series will include Jamie-Lee O'Donnell (Michelle in Derry Girls).
No broadcast date has yet been confirmed for either series.

Galway Races dress code, bag policy and 'banned' items

Almost 130,000 are set to descend onto Ballybrit racecourse this week for the Galway Races. And while there's cash to be made on the track with over €2.1 million in prize money up for grabs across 53 races, the stakes are also high when it comes to fashion at the Galway venue. Although there is no official dress code at Irish racecourses, smart casual attire is usually a safe option. Thursday and Friday offer the perfect opportunity to showcase your style and take part in fashion competitions, with exciting prizes to be won in the best-dressed contests. This year, The Ladies Day fashion panel will consist of style insiders Mandy Maher, Marietta Doran, and Lisa McGowan, who won the contest in 2016. Speaking about what she is looking for in style this Thursday, Lisa said: "To be back here as a judge feels like a full circle moment for me. "I'll be keeping an eye out for individuality and confidence - those little touches that make someone stand out." "Ladies Day has always been about expressing your individuality and celebrating personal style," said Niamh Ryan, co-founder of Ella & Jo, who will also serve as a Sponsor Judge. "We're so excited to bring that same sense of fun and confidence to this year's event, and we can't wait to see the incredible outfits on show." On Friday, ladies will have a second chance to nab the most stylish prize at Athlone Town Centre 'Friday's Most Stylish' from 4pm. Celebrity judge Kayleigh Trappe has been named as this year's judge along with Head Judge Marietta Doran. Kayleigh Trappe. The pair will be seeking stand-out style with sustainability in mind from attendees on the day. This year sees the biggest Prize Fund on offer to date for the competition winner with a Shop & Stay Break courtesy of Athlone Town Centre. The lucky winner will leave Galway Racecourse with a €2,500 Athlone Town Centre Gift Card, a luxury two night break in the four star Sheraton Athlone Hotel in a Deluxe Tower Room with dinner and spa treatments and a €500 voucher for Fields The Jewellers, who are one of the many retailers located in Athlone Town Centre. And while ladies will be dressing to impress to nab the impressive prize, punters need to be prepared for Ireland's ever-changing weather. It's wise to check the forecast when planning your outfit for the races. Punters need to be aware though that backpacks, and large bags are not permitted into the course, so ladies, pack lightly. Bags must be under 29.7cm × 21.7cm. If you do need to bring a backpack, there are no bag storage facilities available so please leave it at home. Bags could be searched on the way into the racetrack, so horse racing fans need to give plenty of time in case there are lengthy queues. Patrons should note that the bringing of alcohol, fireworks, smoke canisters, bottles, glasses, cans, flags, banners, poles, distress signals, laser pointers and other similar articles or containers, including anything which could or might be used as a weapon is strictly prohibited. You may also be searched at the entrance to Galway Racecourse which may include a full body pat down and/or use of hand held metal detectors. Any item(s), which may reasonably be considered for use as a weapon, or which may cause danger or disruption to any other persons at the event, will be confiscated – and won't be returned. If a person does not wish to give consent for a search to take place, Galway Racecourse have a right to refuse admission. A view of Galway Racecourse (Image: ©INPHO/James Crombie) This racecourse policy is endorsed and supported by An Garda Síochána who will always be in the vicinity of the racecourse's designated search areas. Any complaint or issue should be notified to the Gardaí on the day. Signage is clearly displayed where searches are located and the policy and exact procedure are explained clearly by trained search teams, who are in place on the day before any search commences. Buggies and strollers are welcome – these are subject to searches and if you need to bring a medical bag with you, just let security know in advance. Tickets are still available and can be purchased on the Galway Races website. Punters can choose between different tickets including premium experiences, single day and multi-day tickets, as well as group packages. Americans baffled by Ireland's chicken fillet roll and Cork's flag during visit

Rattling off your go-to chicken fillet roll order might be second nature, but for tourists, the fascination lies in understanding why this humble deli item is a staple in Irish life. That's exactly what piqued the interest of American YouTubers Joey and Lauren, who sampled their very first chicken fillet roll on a trip to Cork. Their culinary adventure began after comedian and singer-songwriter Garron Noone dropped a comment on one of their videos. However, upon reaching Dunnes Stores to try out the renowned hangover remedy, they were hit by the sudden realisation that they were clueless about the process. The rookie pair, eager to dig into what they dubbed an iconic part of the Irish diet, turned to the store staff and some youngsters in line for their own rolls for guidance. Joey confessed to the camera inside Dunnes: "We are probably going to ask somebody because we have never gotten this before. We don't really know what this is but we know we need to try it." Despite the initial confusion, the content creators got their rolls after some help from locals (Image: YOUTUBE/Joey and Lauren) Lauren chimed in with her own uncertainty: "We are kind of confused how to get it, like if you are supposed to order it or buy it in a prepackaged thing?" After getting some assistance, they received their rolls, opting for a "really plain" combo of southern fried chicken, mayonnaise, butter, shredded cheese and corn, all for €4.99. Before tucking in, Joey expressed gratitude towards the Cork locals: "Everybody was super helpful. They helped us order it and we also got a free can of 7UP. "Really nice workers here and these group of guys to our right, they actually helped us out a lot, they have been really nice to us." When it came to the big reveal, Lauren declared: "It smells good. I don't know how I'm going to take a bit out of this it is so big. Oh my gosh. That's really good. It is hard to eat though." She went on to say: "We will definitely be getting this again. This is really good, definitely one of my favourite things that I have eaten here... hashtag demolished." A true sight to be hold (Image: YOUTUBE/Joey and Lauren) Joey was just as impressed, and after polishing his off, he enthused: "This is super good. In the words of Garron Noone, delicious, because this is super good. I would get this ten times out of ten, this is a ten out of ten, I am glad we got this. I am really hungry, kind of hungover, and this is a great treat for that." The pair had a brilliant time exploring Cork, but before discovering the ins and outs of the All Ireland hurling final, something else - aside from the chicken fillet roll - left them scratching their heads. Discussing the iconic red and white banners, Joey explained: "There is really great scenery here. We love this spot overlooking the water here, amazing. But as we have been doing our walks we have been noticing these flags, it looks like a Polish flag or an Indonesian flag so we were like, 'Are people just really big fans of Poland here because it is red and white?' "But luckily our friends last night told us it is actually Cork's county flag, so cool to know." Following the release of their video, which can be viewed in its entirety here, one viewer responded: "Chicken fillet roll out of Dunnes. You have been baptised. You can officially call yourself Irish."
