India and England are set to face off once again in less than two days in the five-match Test series in England. With India trailing 2-1 and on the back of a painful defeat at Lord's, momentum is firmly with Ben Stokes' side.
In a rather bold press conference for the hosts,
Harry Brook
spoke to the media ahead of the 4th Test at Old Trafford

As the batter went over the moments of the heated 3rd Test and England's chances in the one that was set to follow, he made a strong claim about one of his teammates.

Joe Root
took top spot as the highest-ranked Test batter in the recent ICC rankings. Speaking on the same, Brook lauded his teammate and even went on to call him the "best batter of all time."
Quizzed on whether there was any rivalry going on between himself and Root in the team, Brook was quick to dismiss it. "Oh, everybody wants to be number one, don't they? Him, probably more than anybody else. But no, he's a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him, so I'll happily let him have it," said Brook with a chuckle, as he spoke to the reporters ahead of the 4th Test.

Adding to his argument on what makes Root so good, Brook said, "He's played for 12, 13 years—or however long he's played.

In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time, so I'll let him have that one."
Root also broke several records in the series, with one not being related to the bat as well. With his 211th catch in Test cricket, he now leads the list for catches taken in the format, bettering India legend Rahul Dravid's record of 210. He took a splendid one-handed catch of Karun Nair in the 3rd Test.
Root has been in impeccable form for the hosts, racking up crucial runs in the last three Tests.
In the previous match at Lord's, the 34-year-old scored a gritty 104 off 199, and managed 40 in the second innings.

Brook, however, failed to impress with the bat in both innings at Lord's, where he only managed 11 and 23 respectively. However, the hosts managed to get over the line and reestablish their series lead with a 22-run victory.
The 4th Test will commence on July 23, with India looking to secure a win to stay alive in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

India vs England 4th Test: N Jagadeesan called up after Rishabh Pant's injury at Old Trafford

With Rishabh Pant ruled out of the fifth Test against England and Ishan Kishan too nursing an injury, selectors have handed a maiden national call-up to Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper N Jagadeesan. The 29-year-old was informed by the selectors on Thursday afternoon to join the squad in England, and Jagadeesan now awaits the required visa to join the team at the earliest. When Pant was ruled out, Ishan was seen as the possible replacement, as he was even part of the County fixtures recently. But Ishan informed the selectors that he has an ankle injury and won't be able to recover in time or gain full match fitness. While KS Bharat was seen as an alternate option, it is understood that the selectors were not keen on going back to him after the Andhra wicketkeeper failed to grab his chances during the home Test series against England. As a result, Jagadeesan, who is next in line, has been added to the squad. The 29-year-old has been part of the India A set up in recent times. In 52 first-class matches, he has scored 10 centuries and 14 fifties at an average of 47.50 for a tally of 3373 runs. Primarily an opener, Jagadeesan has been among the consistent performers for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy and has a triple century to his name. Last season, with Pant still recovering, Jagadeesan was made part of the fringes of the Indian set-up with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar flying to Chennai to watch him in a Ranji fixture against Karnataka. Apart from being an aggressive batsman, Jagadeesan is impressive behind the stumps as well. Earlier in the day, BCCI confirmed in a statement that Pant wouldn't keep wickets in Manchester. 'Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper. Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,' the Board said. Pant did come out to bat to a standing ovation at Old Trafford after the fall of Shardul Thakur's wicket late in the first session. At Lord's, Pant had suffered a hand injury and Dhruv Jurel kept wickets. It is likely that Jurel will be the first-choice wicketkeeper to replace Pant in the final Test that will be played at The Oval in London, having been part of the squad since the Tour games.

Ex-CSK Wicketkeeper To Replace Rishabh Pant In Indian Team For 5th ENG Test: Report

Narayan Jagadeesan is a wicketkeeper-batter from Tamil Nadu. In 52 first-class matches played so far, he has scored 3373 runs. Former Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper-batter Narayan Jagadeesan is reportedly set to replace Rishabh Pant in India's squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Pant suffered a foot injury on Wednesday (July 23), and due to that, he will miss the fifth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England. The fifth Test is scheduled to take place at The Oval from July 31 to August 4. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Thursday (July 24), 'The right-handed keeper batter from Tamil Nadu is almost certain to be added to the squad. An announcement is expected soon." 'The selectors and the team management were looking at Ishan Kishan as a potential option and it later emerged that the 27-year-old keeper from Jharkhand is not available," the report added. Ishan, who last played a Test match for India in July 2023 against the West Indies in Port of Spain, according to a report in Times of India, is dealing with an ankle injury and has 10 stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty. 'Ishan has suffered an ankle injury and has ten stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty," a source tracking the development was quoted as saying by TOI on Thursday. 'Selectors did reach out to Ishan, but only on Thursday. His stitches have been removed, and he currently has a plaster on his left ankle," the source added. Jagadeesan has played a total of 52 first-class matches so far and has scored 3373 runs. His batting average is 47.50 and he has 10 centuries and 14 half-centuries to his credit. In the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, he scored 674 runs in eight matches for Tamil Nadu. His batting average was 56.16 and he crossed the 100-run mark twice in addition to scoring five fifties. Among wicketkeeper-batter's only Vidarbha's Akshay Wadkar (722 runs at 45.12 in 10 matches) scored more runs than him. Jagadeesan's record in IPL In the cash-rich Indian Premier League, Jagadeesan has played a total of 13 matches for two teams—Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders. In seven matches for CSK across two seasons, he scored 73 runs, and in six matches for KKR in IPL 2023, he amassed a total of 89 runs. view comments First Published: July 24, 2025, 17:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Watch: Rishabh Pant bravely arrives to bat despite toe fracture, earns standing ovation

Rishabh Pant comes out to bat on Day 2 in Manchester A day after being forced off the field in visible pain, Rishabh Pant scripted a moment of resilience and spirit that lit up Old Trafford. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter, who had retired hurt on Day 1 of the fourth Test after a brutal blow to the foot, walked out to bat on Day 2 — greeted by a rousing standing ovation from the Manchester crowd. Pant, who had scored a fluent 37 before a Chris Woakes delivery struck his right foot during a reverse sweep attempt, was visibly in distress and had to be taken off the field on a mobile ambulance. Initial scans had revealed a mild compound fracture in Pant's right foot — the suspected cause of the bleeding and swelling that forced him to retire hurt on Wednesday. However, in a gutsy show of determination, Pant returned to the crease after the dismissal of Shardul Thakur on Day 2. With a protective moon boot worn while off the field and no longer able to keep wickets for the rest of the match — BCCI confirmed that Dhruv Jurel would take over the gloves — Pant's return was purely about contributing with the bat, regardless of his limitations. As he emerged from the dressing room, a packed Old Trafford crowd rose to applaud the effort. Cheers echoed around the ground, with several fans on their feet, recognising the determination it took for Pant to resume batting with a fractured toe in a series India trail 1-2. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Poll How do you feel about Rishabh Pant's decision to return to bat despite his injury?
