India and England are set to face off once again in less than two days in the five-match Test series in England. With India trailing 2-1 and on the back of a painful defeat at Lord's, momentum is firmly with Ben Stokes' side.
In a rather bold press conference for the hosts,
Harry Brook
spoke to the media ahead of the 4th Test at Old Trafford
Cricket
Ground.
As the batter went over the moments of the heated 3rd Test and England's chances in the one that was set to follow, he made a strong claim about one of his teammates.
Veteran batter and England icon
Joe Root
took top spot as the highest-ranked Test batter in the recent ICC rankings. Speaking on the same, Brook lauded his teammate and even went on to call him the "best batter of all time."
Quizzed on whether there was any rivalry going on between himself and Root in the team, Brook was quick to dismiss it. "Oh, everybody wants to be number one, don't they? Him, probably more than anybody else. But no, he's a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him, so I'll happily let him have it," said Brook with a chuckle, as he spoke to the reporters ahead of the 4th Test.

Adding to his argument on what makes Root so good, Brook said, "He's played for 12, 13 years—or however long he's played.

In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time, so I'll let him have that one."
Root also broke several records in the series, with one not being related to the bat as well. With his 211th catch in Test cricket, he now leads the list for catches taken in the format, bettering India legend Rahul Dravid's record of 210. He took a splendid one-handed catch of Karun Nair in the 3rd Test.
Root has been in impeccable form for the hosts, racking up crucial runs in the last three Tests.
In the previous match at Lord's, the 34-year-old scored a gritty 104 off 199, and managed 40 in the second innings.

Brook, however, failed to impress with the bat in both innings at Lord's, where he only managed 11 and 23 respectively. However, the hosts managed to get over the line and reestablish their series lead with a 22-run victory.
The 4th Test will commence on July 23, with India looking to secure a win to stay alive in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

The Latest: England beats Spain in a penalty shootout after 1-1 draw to retain title

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) — Defending champion England has won the Women's European Championship after defeating Spain in the final. HT Image The match in Basel was a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final where Spain defeated the Lionesses 1-0. Coincidentally, the same countries played in the men's European Championship final last year. Spain won that match 2-1. Here's the latest: England has defended its European title by defeating Spain in a penalty shootout. The game was tied at 1-1 after extra time. England won the shootout 3-1 with Chloe Kelly scoring the winning penalty kick. It's 1-1 at full time and the players are coming off the pitch for a quick break. Then it's extra time: two times 15 minutes to break the deadlock. England equalized when Alessia Russo made it 1-1 in the 57th minute. Chloe Kelly whipped one of her trademark crosses into the box from the left and Russo rose above the defense to make it 1-1. Spain heads into the break in the lead after Mariona Caldentey's goal in the 25th. Both teams traded early blows but Spain looked stronger after the goal. La Roja kept most of the possession and did not allow England to threaten much. England also trailed at halftime in the quarterfinal against Sweden and semifinal against Italy, but still won both games. Mariona Caldentey has made it 1-0 for Spain in the 25th minute. Ona Batlle whipped in a cross from the right, after good work by Aitana Bonmati, and Caldentey headed it powerfully home. Swiss former player Lara Dickenmann carried the trophy out onto the field after the closing ceremony of Euro 2025. A large circular banner was unfurled in the center of the field in tribute to the host nation, while smaller banners were displayed nearby with 'Thank You' in Switzerland's four official languages —Italian, French, German, and Romansh. Two large Alpine-inspired shapes were then carried onto the field, with the England flag on one and Spain's on the other. Nearly 30,000 inflatable clappers had been distributed to the fans beforehand, while 40 members of the closing ceremony cast also had them on the field. The Asturia Quartet, an all-female string ensemble, performed the national anthems. In somewhat of a surprise change, Athenea Del Castillo has been named in Spain's starting lineup in place of Claudia Pina. Del Castillo's only other start in the tournament was in the final group-stage match, against Italy, when many regular starters were rested with Spain already through. The Real Madrid forward scored one and set up another. She also scored the opener in the quarterfinal win against Switzerland just four minutes after coming onto the field. Pina was decisive the last time Spain played England, scoring twice to help her team to a 2-1 comeback victory in the Nations League last month. The only other change to Spain's lineup from its semifinal victory over Germany is the return of defender Laia Aleixandri from suspension, with María Méndez dropping back down to the bench. Spain's lineup: Coll; Batlle, Paredes, Aleixandri, Olga; Bonmatí, Patri, Putellas; Mariona, González, Del Castillo. Lauren James has recovered from injury and starts for England with coach Sarina Wiegman making just one change. James had to come off at halftime in England's semifinal victory over Italy on Tuesday with an ankle problem and was seen applying ice to her injury during the match. James has started all five of England's games at Euro 2025 and has been named in the lineup for the final. Defender Jess Carter returns after being omitted from the starting lineup for the first time against Italy, for tactical reasons, two days after revealing she was the target of racist abuse online during the tournament. England's lineup: Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Carter, Greenwood; Toone, Walsh, Stanway; James, Russo, Hemp. Basel's soccer stadium has a capacity of 34,250 during Euro 2025 and no empty seats are expected at the final. With an hour to go until kickoff, thousands of fans have already taken their seats. Even before the final, the tournament has broken the total attendance record for a Women's European Championship. A total of 623,088 spectators have attended the 30 matches so far, surpassing the previous total attendance record of 574,875 from Euro 2022. There have been intermittent torrential showers and thunderstorms but that has not dampened the spirits of thousands of Spanish and England fans that have been gathering in the fan zones in Basel. The rain teemed down about two hours before kickoff but the sun came out shortly afterward and the skies above St. Jakob-Park have cleared up for now. England got off to a rough start with a 2-1 defeat to France, becoming the first reigning champion to lose its opening match at a women's Euros. The team bounced back with a 4-0 victory over the Netherlands and a 6-1 thrashing of Wales. Then came the craziness of its quarterfinal against Sweden when it was trailing 2-0 with 12 minutes to go before equalizing and taking the match to extra time and a penalty shootout. There were nine failed penalty attempts before England finally triumphed 3-2. England left it even later in its semifinal against Italy. Teenager Michelle Agyemang leveled in stoppage time to force extra time and fellow substitute Chloe Kelly scored in the 119th minute to secure a 2-1 win, just as it appeared another penalty shootout was looming. Spain swept through the group stage, winning all three matches against Portugal, Belgium and Italy — scoring 14 goals and conceding three. Spain found it tougher to get past Switzerland in the quarterfinals but finally broke the resistance of the host nation with two quickfire goals midway through the second half. Spain also missed two penalties and hit the woodwork three times. Like England, its semifinal lasted 120 minutes. It took a moment of magic from two-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí in the 113th minute to secure a 1-0 win over Germany. ___ AP soccer:

ENG vs IND, fourth Test: Jadeja, Washington refuse Ben Stokes' offer to call off match before start of mandatory overs

Drama unfolded in the high-intensity Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in Manchester on Sunday (July 27, 2025) after Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar refused England skipper Ben Stokes' offer to call off the fourth Test and settle for a draw before the start of the final hour of play. There is a provision that allows both captains to shake hands and agree to a draw if they feel that the possibility of a result is impossible. Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington, batting on 89 and 80 respectively, refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked the England skipper no end. With both approaching their hundreds after having saved the match for India who started their second innings 311 runs in arrears, Jadeja and Washington exercised their rights to continue batting. India coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Shubman Gill backed the decision to carry on batting. "If someone is batting on 90 and the other one is batting on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would they have walked off if someone from England's side would have been batting on 90 or 85? "If someone has the opportunity to get his first Test hundred, won't you allow him to do it? They weathered the storm. It's up to them," Gambhir said at the post-match press conference. "If they want to play that way, that's up to them. I've got nothing more to say. I think both those guys deserved a hundred, and fortunately they got it." On his part, Gill said, "It was up to the boys and both of them were in their 90s, they deserved to score centuries." In the field of play earlier, Stokes had a few words to say as Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were also seen enquiring as to why India wanted to carry on. "Do you want to score a hundred against Harry Brook?" Stokes asked sarcastically and all Jadeja said was "I can't do anything." Stokes said later, "We took the game as far as we could. As soon as draw looked inevitable, I wasn't going to risk my bowlers with the short turnaround (time of three days before the start of fifth Test)." Amid the drama, a smiling Jadeja maintained his grace and ticked the English players off as India, as per rules, were well within their rights to carry on batting. In what seemed like a mark of protest, Stokes introduced Harry Brook into the attack and Jadeja hit him for a six to complete his third Test hundred. However, England team's poor attitude was at the forefront as they started bowling proverbial long hops or "donkey drops" as a mark of protest.

Ice Cube ignites backlash after choosing Caitlin Clark over Angel Reese for $5 million (Image via Getty) Angel Reese fans hoping to see her land a massive $5 million offer from Ice Cube's BIG3 basketball league might be disappointed. Even though the league offered that huge amount to Caitlin Clark earlier this year, it looks like Angel Reese won't be getting the same deal. And now, Ice Cube himself has made it clear why. Ice Cube says Caitlin Clark deal made financial sense, but not Angel Reese This week, on July 25, 2025, Ice Cube was spotted at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). TMZ Sports asked him if Angel Reese would get a similar offer to Clark. His answer was simple no. Not because he doesn't support Reese, but because the business side of things just doesn't make it work. Ice Cube, the co-founder of the BIG3 league, said he had no personal problem with Chicago Sky star Angel Reese. He said he respects her as a player. But he explained that sponsors told him Caitlin Clark would bring in big money and that same excitement wasn't promised with Angel Reese. 'They didn't tell us the same thing about Angel Reese,' Cube told TMZ Sports during the brief interview at LAX. The BIG3 had offered Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark $5 million in March 2024 to play in their 3-on-3 league while still playing in the WNBA. That agreement never materialized, though. Rather, Clark decided to concentrate on her first WNBA season. Angel Reese continues strong WNBA season without BIG3 offer Angel Reese is enjoying an amazing first year in the WNBA. So, while the door might not be fully closed, fans should not expect a BIG3 deal for Angel Reese anytime soon, at least not like the $5 million offer Caitlin Clark once got. FAQs 1.
