‘Super premium frequent flier PM' off on 5-nation jaunt: Congress jabs Modi ahead of visit

The Hindu4 hours ago

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his visit abroad, the Congress on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) said the "frequent flier PM" is off on a 5-nation "jaunt" and alleged that he is running away from four issues, including the Manipur situation and US President Donald Trump's claims about bringing about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh also alleged that the Prime Minister is running away from the "revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor because of the PM's decisions".
Prime Minister Modi will embark on a five-nation tour beginning July 2 to participate in the BRICS Summit in Brazil and expand India's ties with several key nations of the Global South.

"When the going gets tough, the self-styled toughs get going. The Super Premium Frequent Flier PM is off on a 5-nation, 8-day jaunt," Mr. Ramesh said in a post on X.
He is running away from at least four issues that are agitating the nation, Mr. Ramesh said.
Mr. Ramesh alleged that the PM is running away from Manipur, "which he has not visited ever since the double engine in the state got derailed and ever since normal life in the state has got totally destroyed".
The Congress leader claimed that PM Modi is also running away from revelations by defence officials that India suffered reverses in the first two days of Operation Sindoor "because of the PM's decisions".
His remarks were an apparent reference to the reported comments of India's defence attache to Indonesia. However, the Indian embassy in Indonesia, in a post on X on Sunday, had said that the defence attache's remarks have been "quoted out of context and the media reports are a misrepresentation of the intention and thrust of the presentation made by the speaker".
Mr. Ramesh also claimed that the PM is running away from the continued claims by President Trump that he effected a ceasefire between India and Pakistan using the trade deal as a carrot and stick.
He further alleged that the PM is running away from "the continued failure to bring the Pahalgam terrorists to justice even after 70 days".
"The failure is all the more glaring given they may have been earlier involved in terror attacks in Poonch (Dec 2023) and Gagangir & Gulmarg (Oct 2024)," Mr. Ramesh said.
Besides Brazil, Modi will visit Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia during the eight-day trip, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
In the first leg of the visit, Mr. Modi will undertake a visit to Ghana from July 2 to 3. From Ghana, Mr. Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago on a two-day visit from July 3 to 4. In the third leg of his visit, Mr. Modi will visit Argentina from July 4 to 5. In the fourth leg of his visit, Mr. Modi will travel to Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The Prime Minister will visit Brazil from July 5 to 8 to attend the 17th BRICS Summit followed by a state visit.
In the final leg of his visit, Mr. Modi will travel to Namibia.

Karnataka Minister says Congress will ban RSS if party comes to power at Centre

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Tuesday said that if the Congress returns to power at the Centre, it would impose a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He argued that the RSS spreads hatred in society and does not operate within the bounds of the law. advertisementKharge referred to historical precedents to defend his stance, stating, 'Didn't Sardar Patel ban the RSS? They fell at his feet and assured they would follow the law of the land. Didn't Indira Gandhi ban the RSS? They did the same again. Even now, they are only pretending to follow the law. What is the source of their Rs 250 crore funding? These things must be investigated.' 'The job of the legislature is to legislate. We will bring in necessary legislation, but I cannot act beyond the ambit of the Constitution,' he June 27, in a post on X, Kharge listed what he described as a historical record of the RSS's actions, Kharge said the organisation did not participate in the Salt Satyagraha, the Quit India Movement, or any other mass movements for India's independence. He alleged that the RSS had opposed the tricolour flag on the eve of independence, distributed sweets after Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, and campaigned for the Manusmriti to be implemented instead of the concluded by stating that the RSS remains opposed to both the Constitution and the national flag, and claimed that the BJP acts as its puppet. 'The RSS is acutely aware that the Constitution stands between them and their ideological aspirations. However, it is crucial to remember that the Constitution's preservation will be fiercely defended by Indians who are united in their commitment to democracy, diversity and equality,' he said.'We should not have lifted the ban on RSS,' Kharge added.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

PM Modi's visit to focus on trade, investment: Namibian Presidency

Windhoek: The Namibian Presidency has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Southwest African nation on July 9 will explore new avenues to enhance the bilateral collaborations between India and Namibia. Namibia will be the final leg of PM Modi's five-nation visit after Ghana (July 2-3), Trinidad and Tobago (July 3-4), Argentina (July 4-5) and Brazil (July 5-8). It will be the first visit of Prime Minister Modi to Namibia, and the third-ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to Namibia. It is also the first bilateral State Visit that Nandi-Ndaitwah is hosting after taking over as the President of Namibia in March. "Driven by a common desire to deepen bilateral relations between the two nations, the leaders will witness the signing of bilateral cooperation agreements, including those in trade and investment, the environment, education, health, and ICT," state run Namibian Broadcasting Corporation(NBC) quoted Alfredo Hengari, the Press Secretary of Namibia as saying on Monday (local time). According to Hengari, PM Modi's programme includes an address to a joint session of Parliament and a visit to Heroes' Acre in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, the war memorial of the country. The Namibian Press Secretary stated that PM Modi and President of Namibia Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah will exchange views on global issues of mutual concern. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), PM Modi's forthcoming visit to Namibia, the first since Namibian President Nandi-Ndaitwah assumed office, is a significant step towards renewing the bilateral ties and deepening economic engagement between both nations. PM Modi's July 9 visit, happening so early in the Namibian President's tenure, would be very useful in renewing the relationship, besides deepening economic engagement, the MEA stated. The MEA said that during his visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Nandi-Ndaitwah and also pay homage to the Founding Father and first President of Namibia, Late Dr. Sam Nujoma. India and Namibia have strong historical linkages, with New Delhi recognising the South West African country much before it attained independence in 1990. Both nations enjoy a very warm relationship and share a wide range of areas for cooperation, including in the domains of environment and biodiversity, trade and investments, mining, diamond processing, energy, healthcare, defence, agriculture, capacity building and education. PM Modi's visit is expected to further deepen and strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.
