2027 5-star LB praises Texas A&M DC Jay Bateman, sees Aggies as a future option

USA Today12 hours ago

Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten's NFL career ended after the 2020 season. Since his retirement, the future Hall of Famer has been one of the top high school coaches in Texas, having coached at Liberty Christian since 2021. Like every Father's dream, Witten has been able to coach his two sons, including 2027 five-star linebacker Cooper Witten, who Texas A&M has heavily recruited.
Witten is one of the best athletes in the 2027 cycle, and to no surprise, he could also play tight end at the next level due to his impressive speed and catch radius. However, he may be too solid a defender not to keep at linebacker.
On Friday, KBTX reporter Tyler Shaw caught up with the younger Witten during a preseason summer scrimmage, where he praised Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, who is also one of the top linebacker coaches and developers in the country.
"I like (Texas) A&M a lot. Their defensive coordinator, Jay Bateman is a great coach, great guy to talk to, etc." Witten stated. "I really think he could develop me and make me into the best player I can be."
This is high praise for Bateman, who, despite losing his play-calling duties this offseason, has continued to be one of the best recruiters in the country, helping land several high-ranking 2026 prospects, including five-star defensive end Tristian Given and five-star cornerback Brandon Arrington.
At linebacker, former Florida LB Scooby Williams is coming off his best collegiate season, while junior Taurean York is one his way to becoming a potential first-round pick after the 2025 season.
Cooper Witten was elite on both sides of the ball during his 2024 junior season, recording 45 tackles, one sack, 5 INTs (2 return touchdowns), six pass breakups, and one safety on defense. Witten hauled in 15 receptions for 263 yards and seven touchdowns as a tight end/receiver.
According to 247Sports, Cooper Witten is currently positioned as the 24th-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, the No. 1-ranked linebacker, and the 4th-ranked prospect in Texas.

Concacaf Gold Cup bracket, schedule: USMNT vs. Costa Rica in quarterfinals

The U.S. men's national soccer team has won all three of its Concacaf Gold Cup matches so far, but the knockout stage will present an entirely different challenge for Mauricio Pochettino's squad. Will ghosts of recent tournaments past haunt the USMNT? The U.S. crashed out of the 2024 Copa América in the group stage, then lost in the Concacaf Nations League semifinals to Panama. On Sunday, June 29, the USMNT faces Costa Rica in a Concacaf Gold Cup quarterfinal, looking to build some momentum heading into next year's World Cup. The USMNT has reached eight of the last 10 Gold Cup finals. Those absences have created an opportunity for others to step up. Attacking midfielder Malik Tillman now seems like a lock to make the USMNT World Cup team next year. Forward Patrick Agyemang is a matchup conundrum for opposing defenders. Defender Alex Freeman, son of former NFL wide receiver Antonio Freeman, might have played his way into the conversation, too. When is the USMNT vs. Costa Rica Gold Cup quarterfinal? Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 29. Where will the USMNT vs. Costa Rica Gold Cup quarterfinal be played? Browns Cornerback Unhappy With Role in 2024

Browns Cornerback Unhappy With Role in 2024 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns' season didn't go as planned last year as the team suffered injuries to key players while entire position groups seemed to underperform. Advertisement A 3-14 mark and last-place finish in the AFC North opened the way for a successful draft, and hopefully, a turnaround season in 2025. But one Browns player wasn't happy with the way he was used last season, and it raises some eyebrows on the defensive side of the ball. 'It's been an interesting kind of relationship with Greg and sort of his role,' explained Orange and Brown Talk host Dan Labbe on a recent podcast. 'Last year was the first year ... he's been their slot guy for a few years, but last year it was really kind of the first year where, when they did have two corners on the field, he wasn't one of them.' Newsome would like a larger role in the defense in 2025, or play somewhere else, as Mary Kay Cabot of reported. Advertisement 'When I talked to Greg Newsome at the Super Bowl on Radio Row back in January or early February, he talked about the fact that he wants to be used more. He was primarily the nickel back last year. He wants to be on the field more often,' Cabot reported on the Orange and Brown Talk podcast. 'More tellingly, Newsome actually point blank said, 'You know, I need to know some things before I want to sign a long-term contract here.'" Newsome started 11 games in 2021, 15 games in 2022, 13 games in 2023, but just three in 2024. 'No Worry' Over Browns' 2nd-Round Pick's Lack of Signed Contract

'No Worry' Over Browns' 2nd-Round Pick's Lack of Signed Contract originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns are set to find their franchise quarterback this offseason with four options in camp. Advertisement The battle between two veterans in Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and two rookie draft picks, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders, will take center stage this summer, into training camp and the preseason. While the quarterbacks are figuring things out, the running backs room is doing the same. Out is Nick Chubb after seven seasons in Cleveland, and one of the possibilities of a replacement is former Ohio State Buckeyes running back and Browns' second-round pick, Quinshon Judkins. While Judkins has participated in all offseason activities thus far, he's without a signed contract for one reason or the other. And he's not the only one in the league going through the same situation. Advertisement Former NFL safety Tyvis Powell discussed this on the "Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show" recently. "Must be some language in there that he wants cleared up," Powell said. "That's the only thing I can think of because it ain't negotiating money. That's Slotted, you can't negotiate that. Quinshon's ready to play. He's out there every day practicing and doing everything he's supposed to do, even without a contract. At the end of the day, it's gonna get done. I'm not worried about it." With the departure of Chubb, the Browns needed a replacement, and they found one just down the road in Columbus. The combination of Judkins and Jerome Ford could be a potent 1-2 punch in the running game for Cleveland, as long as they can figure out Judkins' contract situation.
