Make sure you've done your research before pointing fingers, Wee tells Armizan

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong has called on Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali to provide evidence supporting his claim that Wee was involved in approving the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021.
In a video posted on Facebook today, Wee strongly refuted Armizan's statement and demanded proof for the allegation.
"I have reviewed the parliamentary Hansard and the relevant bill to confirm which section mentions that a permit is required for using more than three cylinders of subsidised gas.
"Furthermore, are food and beverage businesses actually prohibited from using subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)?" he asked.
Previously, the media reported that Armizan had reminded Wee to review the regulations that were enacted when the former transport minister was in the cabinet.
Armizan was quoted as saying that the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 — which stipulate that any party using more than 42kg of LPG is required to apply for a Scheduled Controlled Goods Permit — had already been enforced since Oct 15, 2021, under the previous administration when Wee was a member of the cabinet.
Wee demanded that Armizan issue an apology for alleging his involvement in approving regulations related to supply control while he was in the cabinet in 2021.
The Ayer Hitam member of parliament said that based on a review of the 2021 parliamentary Hansard, the amendment at the time was solely aimed at granting broader enforcement powers to officers of the then Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry.
He said the amendment to the Control of Supplies Act (Amendment) 2021 was never intended to regulate the use of subsidised LPG.
"I reviewed every line in the Hansard of the Dewan Rakyat during the debate, where MPs from constituencies such as Jempol, Bayan Baru, Pasir Gudang, Jelutong, Kota Melaka, Bukit Bendera, Pokok Sena, and Sepang presented their arguments.
"However, not a single MP at the time raised the issue of requiring a permit for three cylinders of subsidised LPG, nor did anyone discuss the commercial use of LPG by food outlets," he said.
He said then Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, in his reply in parliament in March 2022, also made no mention of any regulation concerning subsidised gas cylinders.
"Datuk Armizan, why fabricate stories and make baseless accusations against me?
"You weren't even in the Dewan Rakyat at the time, but you can always check the Hansard.
"Do your homework before accusing me.
"You're being unfair to me, you know? Or at the very least, just call Nanta to get confirmation.
"Surely you have his phone number? If not, I can give it to you," he said.
Wee said Armizan should not have accused him of being involved in the amendment related to the requirement for storing more than three cylinders of subsidised LPG and questioned the accuracy of the minister's source of information.
He said the regulation concerning the use of subsidised LPG cylinders not exceeding 42kg might merely be an internal directive or administrative instruction from the ministry, and not part of the 2021 amendment.
Wee said the law was never enforced until it was first implemented under the Pakatan Harapan 1.0 administration in 2019, before being revived again through Op Gasak this year.
He said Armizan should issue an apology for the confusion and the allegations made against him.
"You (Armizan) owe me an apology for your mistake.

Quit BN but don't join PN, says MCA division leader

MCA's grassroots have called for the party to withdraw from BN amid discontent over its role in the federal administration. PETALING JAYA : An MCA division leader has backed calls for the party to quit Barisan Nasional, but objects to it joining the opposition Perikatan Nasional. Sungai Petani MCA chief Cheng Joo Choi said joining PN would only lead to MCA being perceived as hopping between coalitions, which would further hamper support from Chinese voters, Sin Chew Daily reported. Cheng said MCA must abandon old mindsets and models, and rebuild itself as an independent party in the opposition. 'MCA can no longer just blindly follow orders. We cannot keep working hard without any control over the political game. 'Last year, our division officially passed a resolution to withdraw from BN, but it was not adopted at the state convention. Today, we raise it again because the situation demands a decisive move more than ever before,' he was quoted as saying. He said MCA has been constrained ever since BN joined the unity government, with the party given a vague role while Umno and Pakatan Harapan integrated their resources and fastened their grip on power. Cheng said MCA cannot keep relying on political 'handouts', and that, without the trust of Chinese voters, the party would not be able to support any form of political partnership. 'If MCA can't even secure its own voter base, how can it talk about partnerships? Alliances are, at their core, mutual exchanges of interests. 'We need Malay votes, they need Chinese votes, but if we've lost the trust of the Chinese community, what's the point of the exchange?' This meant that MCA must go back to being focussed on the needs of the Chinese community, he said. Cheng pointed out that former MCA president Liow Tiong Lai and current deputy president Mah Hang Soon had poured a lot of resources into their election campaigns in 2022, but still failed to win their contests. 'This proves that without support from the Chinese community, everything is in vain,' he said. There have been growing calls from MCA's grassroots for the party to withdraw from BN amid discontent over its role in the federal administration. MCA's leadership has said its next course of action would be based on what the grassroots decide on in their annual general meetings (AGM) at the division level. Last week, MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the party would wait for the AGM for its decision on its future in the unity government.

Trust the legal process, Armizan says after Sabah leaders charged with graft

Published on: Tuesday, July 01, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 01, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Armizan Mohd Ali said GRS leaders have never publicly commented on corruption cases involving other parties, even when under pressure. PETALING JAYA: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) deputy secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali today called on all parties to put their trust in the legal process after an assistant minister and a GRS assemblyman were charged with corruption yesterday. In a statement, Armizan said that nobody should jump to conclusions based on perceptions, sentiments, or one-sided media reports. 'Let us not be quick to label someone a corrupt criminal before the legal process has run its full course. Perception is not always reality, and we have a legal system for a reason. 'I am not asking anyone to be particularly fair to GRS, but let us not turn a blind eye to the realities before us,' he said. He also said that when it came to allegations of corruption, many leaders across various parties had been implicated – some from the opposition, and others from within the ruling coalition itself. 'Some have already been tried and acquitted, others have been convicted. Some were granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, while others have ongoing trials that have dragged on for years. 'As for the so-called 'money trails' in corruption cases, we've seen funds go directly into personal accounts, into spouses' accounts, proxy companies, or even take the form of assets and other benefits.' But despite such cases, Armizan said GRS leaders had refrained from making public or official comments on the legal proceedings of leaders from other parties. 'Even when we have been cornered or pushed to the wall, we have not retaliated with comparisons. We have instead chosen to let the legal process take its course,' he added. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Andi, the Tanjung Batu assemblyman from Umno, and Yusof, from Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, were charged with receiving RM200,000 and RM150,000 in bribes, respectively. Businessman Albert Tei was charged with bribing them. All three claimed trial. Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor said his administration would let the law take its course and would not interfere in any investigation or legal action against any of its government leaders. Sabah PKR chairman Mustapha Sakmud, however, reportedly described the scandal as a shocking development that could significantly change the Sabah political landscape. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Over 22,000 traders register for e-wallets via ReDI initiative in Malaysia

PAPAR: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), through its Retail Sector Digitalisation Initiative (ReDI), has helped 22,368 traders nationwide register for e-wallet services, since the programme was launched in August 2022, up to May this year. Its Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the figure far exceeded the 12th Malaysia Plan's target, of 15,000 registered traders by this year. 'From Jan 1 to May 31, 2025, a total of 3,229 traders nationwide registered under ReDI. Of this, 1,120 were from Sabah and 1,799 from Sarawak,' he said. He said this after flagging off the Sabah Zone-level ReDI Roadshow 2025, here, today. Armizan added that the ongoing 10-day Borneo ReDI Roadshow 2025, organised by KPDN - kicked off on June 26 in Sematan, Sarawak, and is scheduled to conclude on July 5 in Tawau, Sabah. He said the organisation of the Borneo ReDI Roadshow 2025 is a proactive move by KPDN, to raise awareness among rural traders about operating digital-based businesses. 'The main focus is to promote the use of e-wallets for purchase transactions, and to foster a cashless society, especially in rural areas,' he said. 'The ReDI initiative offers efficient financial management, business development opportunities, a variety of payment options, and more effective inventory control that traders can leverage,' he added. Armizan added that the initiative is supported through strategic collaboration with partners, such as Bank Negara Malaysia, PayNet, and registered e-wallet providers, including Touch 'n Go eWallet, GrabPay, ShopeePay, MAE by Maybank, Boost, and SPay Global. 'As of the fifth day of the ReDI Borneo Roadshow 2025, a total of 3,708 traders in Sabah and Sarawak have registered,' he said.
