France says it obtains Palestinian reform pledge ahead of conference

Indian Express10-06-2025
France said on Tuesday it had obtained new commitments from the Palestinian Authority to reform, ahead of a conference next week at which Paris could become the most prominent Western power to back recognition of an independent Palestinian state.
President Emmanuel Macron has received a letter from Mahmoud Abbas in which the Palestinian president condemns the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack against Israel, calls on all hostages to be released and pledges further reforms, the Elysee said.
Abbas, 89, has headed the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority since the death of veteran leader Yasser Arafat in 2004. The PA exercises limited self-rule in parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank but lost control of Gaza to its rivals Hamas since 2007. It has previously condemned Hamas for the attack that provoked the Gaza war and has called for the militant group to be disarmed in a future settlement.
The letter to Macron, who is working on organising an international conference with Saudi Arabia to discuss recognition of Palestine, contains 'unprecedented' pledges, Macron's office said, without elaborating.
'Hamas will no longer rule Gaza and must hand over its weapons and military capabilities to the Palestinian Security Forces, which will oversee their removal outside the Occupied Palestinian territory, with Arab and international support,' the French leader's office quoted Abbas as having written in the letter.
Commenting on the letter, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters that 'Abbas has no legitimacy to speak about the resistance's arms.'
He said the French government should be aware that the letter it received on the future of Gaza 'only represents the opinion of the person who signed it,' in reference to Abbas.
'Any plan that targets resistance groups or works on overriding it won't succeed,' he said.
Israel has said it will not accept any role for the PA in Gaza after the war and has denounced countries that consider recognising Palestinian independence, which it says would reward Hamas for its attacks. French officials have said Macron is leaning towards recognising a Palestinian state ahead of the U.N. conference which France and Saudi Arabia are co-hosting from June 17-20.

Palestinian activist linked to Oscar-winning film 'killed' by Israeli settler in West Bank

Jerusalem, July 30 (UNI) A prominent Palestinian activist, Odeh Hathalin, who contributed as a consultant to the Oscar-winning documentary "No Other Land", was fatally shot on Monday during an assault allegedly carried out by an Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank, according to reports from local officials and journalists. The shooting occurred in the village of Umm al-Khair, part of the Masafer Yatta community, an area long subjected to tensions between Palestinian residents, Israeli settlers and security forces. The village lies within a cluster of remote hamlets frequently targeted by settler expansion and military enforcement. Eyewitness footage, geolocated and verified by CNN, captured Yinon Levi, a notorious settler figure wielding a handgun while confronting local villagers. A video shared by Abraham on X showed Levi firing a gun multiple times as he confronted Palestinian villagers. CNN geolocated the video to the site of the incident. In the video, Levi – carrying a handgun, standing in front of a bulldozer – is seen grappling with a villager and pushing away the man filming him. He then begins to fire to his side and in the air, then moves towards the handful of Palestinians. The villagers soon begin to run away. It was unclear from the footage what Levi was shooting at. Another video obtained by CNN showed a man who appeared to be Hathalin bleeding on the ground. The Palestinian health ministry said later he had succumbed to his injuries. Hathalin had long been an emblematic figure in the non-violent resistance movement in southern Hebron, documenting settler violence and state-backed displacement in the South Hebron Hills, particularly in the Masafer Yatta region region, an area long targeted by Israeli authorities for demolition under the pretext of military training zones. Levi was sanctioned by the Biden administration and the European Union last year but was removed from the US sanctions list shortly after President Donald Trump took office this year. In its initial sanctions announcement in April 2024, the US Department of Treasury State Department said that Levi 'regularly led groups of violent extremists who engaged in actions creating an atmosphere of fear in the West Bank.' It added that groups led by Levi assaulted Palestinian civilians, 'threatened them with additional violence if they did not leave their homes, burned their fields, and destroyed their property.' Many settlers are armed, and violence in the West Bank has surged since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. At least 964 Palestinians have been killed since then by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, according to the United Nations, as of July 15. Settlers have a strong influence on Israeli politics, and in the rare cases where they are arrested for violent attacks against Palestinians, they are often released without charge. Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank are illegal under international law. Alaa al-Hathalin, Hathalin's cousin, told CNN that Levi was known to the community because 'he always attacks us.' Levi's lawyer Avichai Hajbi criticised the police for arresting his client and claimed 'the investigating unit itself admitted that the shooting was carried out due to a life-threatening situation faced by Yinon Levi and another individual.' His client was 'attacked by a mob throwing stones, endangering his life and that of others,' Hajbi said in a statement. Ofer Cassif, a left-wing member of Israel's parliament, has demanded that authorities launch an investigation into Hathalin's death. CNN reported in March that settlers had also targeted Hamdan Ballal, another co-director of 'No Other Land,' outside his home in the village of Susya, also in Masser Yatta. Ballal, who had recently returned from Los Angeles to accept an Oscar for the film, told CNN he thought the group of settlers would kill him. He said he was detained by Israeli soldiers, handcuffed, blindfolded and beaten. The film 'No Other Land,' which tracked the destruction of the Masser Yatta community between 2019 and 2023, won Best Documentary Feature Film at the 2024 Oscars. Its final scene shows Adra's cousin, Zakara al-Adra, being shot by an Israeli settler in October 2023. UNI NST PRS

RS Debate: Amit Shah Blasts Congress For Coining ‘Saffron Terror', Says Hindus Can Never Be Terrorists

NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday listed out several Congress-era errors, leading to the formation of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and loss of vast swathes of land to enemy nations and also tore into the grand old party's appeasement politics for political gains. Speaking on Operation Sindoor debate, the Home Minister held Congress' policies responsible for multiple acts of terror in the country, while categorically stating that Hindus can never be terrorists. HM Shah said that the desperation of the Congress party for a certain vote bank, in all these years, emboldened the terrorists and their motives. Blasting the previous Congress regimes for coining 'saffron terror', he said that the grand old party demonised the majority community i.e. Hindus for its myopic political gains. Recalling the Batla House encounter, he said that the Congress party abandoned its own forces and stood with Pakistan-sponsored terrorists for appeasing a certain community. 'When the country mourned the demise of brave cop Mohan Sharma in Batla House encounter, Sonia Gandhi wept for the Batla House shooters,' he said, questioning the absurd politicking of Congress party. The Home Minister also rebutted Congress' China jab and spoke about instances when the latter's conduct looked dubious and diabolical. 'When our forces were engaging with enemy forces during Doklam face-off, the Congress leaders were clandestinely meeting Chinese officials. What kind of politics is this?' he questioned. Responding to Chidambaram's charge that Operation Sindoor was not decisive, he asked the principal opposition party whether the 1965, 1971 battles were final and decisive and if Pakistan stopped spreading terror after being then taught a lesson. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has instilled fear in the minds and hearts of terrorists across the border and whenever the terror elements will rear its head, "our Army will crush them again".
