Detailed project report for redevelopment of Panjapur lake to be finalised soon
Sprawling over 43 hectares, the Panjapur lake is one of the major water bodies that attracts winged visitors. Since the lake is located near the newly opened Integrated Bus Terminus, the Tiruchi Corporation has proposed rejuvenating the water body and creating recreational amenities for the residents.
The plan was mooted in 2023 after environmentalists in the city urged the district administration to renovate the water bodies that were in total neglect.
A consultant has been appointed, and a sum of ₹23 lakh was sanctioned to prepare a feasibility report. Project estimation and fund requirements are yet to be finalised, a senior official said.
According to official sources, the restoration work includes clearing the inlet and outlet channels to ensure a seamless water flow into the lake, desilting to restore original capacity, strengthening bunds on all sides and removing encroachments and water hyacinths.
Apart from restoration, the available space around the water body would be utilised to create recreational amenities such as walkways, seating space, children's play area, decorative lights, and planting of trees along its length to create an eco-friendly environment. It is said that redeveloping the water body will aid in recharging the groundwater table.
The Corporation has also planned to rejuvenate Kothamangalam big and small tanks, located in city limits, and Pirattiyur tank, situated close to the Tiruchi-Dindigul National Highway, Punganur, Malaipatti, and Kallikudi tanks located in the peripheral areas to augment the drinking water supply to meet the future requirements.

Surprise inspection reveals civic mess left unaddressed
1 2 Jaipur: A surprise inspection across various parts of Jaipur Municipal Corporation-Heritage and Greater zones on Monday revealed alarming civic lapses, from clogged drains and open garbage to crumbling buildings and encroached footpaths. Senior officials from dept of local self govt (LSG) reviewed conditions at public places, markets, and roads to take stock of Jaipur's preparedness for the monsoon and general civic upkeep. The inspection covered key routes and localities, including Statue Circle, Govt Hostel, MI Road, railway station area, Hasanpura Puliya, Khatipura, Jhotwara Road, and later extended to Greater zone areas like Vaishali Nagar, Gautam Marg, Vijay Dwar, Grenade Marg, and Gandhi Path West. At several locations, unattended drains, illegal street vendors, and dangerously dilapidated buildings were found. Civic officials were directed to act immediately. Ravi Jain, principal secretary (LSG), said, "All drains must be cleared without delay to avoid waterlogging during the rains. Shops must have dustbins placed outside, and anyone violating this rule should face penalties." Several old structures in residential and commercial areas were marked as dangerous. "Any encroachments around such buildings must be removed, and demolition should be carried out legally and swiftly," Jain instructed. In areas where food vendors and shopkeepers were found violating cleanliness norms, spot fines were issued. "Commercial establishments that fail to follow hygiene standards should be penalised without delay," Jain said.

Pune Metro sees 24% boost in ridership in July
The Pune Metro has seen a 24% increase in average daily rides in the month of July, as compared to the average daily rides of the previous 10 months. From September 2024 to June 2025 the metro had 1,54,652 average daily rides. This number jumped up to 1,92,204 average daily rides in the month of July. Signs of increase were seen in the month of June itself, with the month recording 1,74,702 average daily rides. From September 2024 to May 2025, average daily rides on the two metro lines ranged from 1.44 lakh to 1.60 lakh. June was the first time the average daily rides breached the 1.7 lakh mark and in July, the figure further shot up to over 1.92 lakh. The Aqua Line (Vanaz-Ramwadi) had the larger share of passengers at over 1.08 lakh average daily rides in June, while the Purple Line (PCMC-Swargate) had 83,459 average daily rides. Dr Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director (Administration & Public Relations) at Maha Metro, said, 'Full 33 kms are operational now and we are increasing multimodal integration as well. Due to the monsoon season, people are using their two wheelers less and opting to use the metro. A culmination of these factors might have led to the increase in ridership.' Sonawane also assured that the train frequency will be increased to six minutes from the current seven minutes during peak hours within the next three to four months. This reduction will be the first step towards increasing the frequency to five minutes in the future. Even with the increased ridership, the Pune Metro is nowhere close to the daily rides estimated in the system's Detailed Project Report. Thoothukudi councillors oppose water tariff hike, urge road repairs at council meeting
Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy announced that the work to widen the Puckle Canal by five metres has been initiated. The 6-km stretch of the canal, beginning from Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown, will be widened in such a way that the cement roads on both sides of the canal are not damaged. The announcement was made at the Thoothukudi Corporation Council meeting on Thursday. Several councillors raised concerns about several issues, including the decision to increase drinking water charges. They said that since the property tax and professional tax had been increased, the decision to increase water charge should be revoked. They urged the Corporation to control the stray dog menace in the city, causing great distress to the public. AIADMK councillor Manthiramoorthy said cracks had been developing in the newly constructed Urban Health and Wellness Centre at Caldwell Colony. He said the facility, which was meant for the poor and underprivileged people, was showing signs of structural failure, in just 20 days after its inauguration. He urged the Corporation to take action in the matter. The councillors called for immediate repair of storm-water drains and roads that were damaged during the underground drainage (UGD) project before the onset of monsoon. They stressed that all parts of the Corporation must be provided with proper roads and street lights. The Mayor said the roads in Wards 15, 16, 17, 18, 49 and 50 had been damaged because of UGD work and all these roads would be restored within two months. Similarly, roads in Wards 4, 5, 9, 10 and 11 had been damaged because of a 24x7 water supply project work and these roads also would be relaid within three months. These works were part of the broader proposal to relay 964 new roads across the Corporation, he added. He said five acres of land had been allotted to a private NGO at Tharuvaikulam dump yard to rehabilitate stray dogs. The organisation was yet to begin its operations.
