Mysterious object spotted in our galaxy is emitting X-rays and radio waves, astronomers say

Lead scientist breaks down discovery of possible life on distant planet
Astronomers have discovered a strange new object in our Milky Way.
An international team reported Wednesday that this celestial object — perhaps a star, pair of stars or something else entirely — is emitting X-rays around the same time it's shooting out radio waves. What's more, the cycle repeats every 44 minutes, at least during periods of extreme activity.
X-rays and radio waves are two different types of electromagnetic radiation. The correlation in their emission patterns in this case, along with other mysterious observations, led the study's authors to characterize what they found as "unlike any known Galactic object."
Located 15,000 light-years away in a region of the Milky Way brimming with stars, gas and dust, this object could be a highly magnetized dead star like a neutron or white dwarf, Curtin University's Ziteng Andy Wang said in an email from Australia.
Or it could be "something exotic" and unknown, said Wang, lead author of the study published in the journal Nature.
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory spotted the X-ray emissions by chance last year while focusing on a supernova remnant, or the remains of an exploded star. Wang said it was the first time X-rays had been seen coming from a so-called long-period radio transient, a rare object that cycles through radio signals over tens of minutes.

Given the uncertain distance, astronomers can't tell if the weird object is associated with the supernova remnant or not. A single light-year is 5.8 trillion miles.
The hyperactive phase of this object — designated ASKAP J1832−091 — appeared to last about a month. Outside of that period, the star did not emit any noticeable X-rays. That could mean more of these objects may be out there, scientists said.
"While our discovery doesn't yet solve the mystery of what these objects are and may even deepen it, studying them brings us closer to two possibilities," Wang said. "Either we are uncovering something entirely new, or we're seeing a known type of object emitting radio and X-ray waves in a way we've never observed before."
Launched in 1999, Chandra orbits tens of thousands of miles above Earth, observing some of the hottest, high-energy objects in the universe.
It's the world's most powerful X-ray telescope, according to NASA. A description of the telescope on the space agency's website notes that its purpose is to allow scientists across the globe to obtain X-ray images of faraway environments, in hopes that the images may "help them understand the structure and evolution of the universe."

The interstellar comet first observed on Tuesday by NASA's Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Alert System telescope, or ATLAS, has been officially named 3I/ATLAS. A series of "pre-discovery" observations dating back to June 14 from three ATLAS Telescopes globally and the Zwicky Transient Facility in California's Palomar Observatory have since been collected, along with new observations from several telescopes since the initial report. "If confirmed, it will be the third known interstellar object from outside our solar system that we have discovered," Dr. Mark Norris, a senior lecturer in astronomy at the University of Central Lancashire, told The Guardian. Dr. Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, told The New York Times there is "no uncertainty" that the comet is from interstellar space, noting speeds that indicate it could not have originated in our solar system. "If you trace its orbit backward, it seems to be coming from the center of the galaxy, more or less," Chodas said. "It definitely came from another solar system. We don't know which one." The comet will reach its closest approach to the Sun around Oct. 30, but it shows no threat to Earth as it will remain at least 150 million miles away. It is currently about 416 million miles from the Sun. In December, the comet is expected to reappear on the other side of the Sun. The comet's size and physical attributes are being investigated. It is expected to remain visible to ground-based telescopes through September. Jake Foster, a Royal Observatory Greenwich astronomer, said: "At the moment, the comet is not expected to be visible to the naked eye, but it should be visible through a reasonably sized amateur telescope in late 2025 and early 2026. As it is studied more over the coming weeks, we'll get a better idea of just how visible it will realistically be." In 2017 Oumunamua traveled through the solar system as the first interstellar object. In 2019, the second interstellar comet, Borisov passed by.

Scientists with NASA's Lucy mission are finally wrapping up the process of refining the data gathered by the spacecraft's April 20 encounter with Donaldjohanson, an asteroid in our solar system's main asteroid belt. And it's, uh, as peanut-shaped as we first saw it. Earlier this year, Lucy's Long Range Reconnaissance Imager snapped an image of Donaldjohansson while quickly swooping past it, at a distance of about 600 miles (960 kilometers), with the smallest visible features measuring around 130 feet (40 meters) across—an impressive close-up, considering the overall scale of anything we observe in space. Regrettably, the Sun's position behind Lucy reduced the contrast of the asteroid's smaller details. But the close visit is invaluable nevertheless, as it's allowing scientists to carefully comb over the details of its surface after adjusting for the brightness. 'Asteroid Donaldjohanson has strikingly complicated geology,' said Hal Levison, Lucy's principal investigator, in an earlier press release about the asteroid. Donaldjohansson likely got its lumpy shape from a cosmic collision between two smaller objects around 150 million years ago. It's a relatively common shape among smaller asteroids in the solar system, so what we learn from Donaldjohanson could inform our understanding of many other cosmic objects. 'As we study the complex structures in detail, they will reveal important information about the building blocks and collisional processes that formed the planets in our Solar System,' Levison added in the same release. Donaldjohansson is not the main objective of the Lucy mission, whose itinerary is set for the eight Trojan asteroids that share Jupiter's orbit around the Sun. Still, Lucy's Donaldjohanson encounter—and the November 2023 flyby of asteroid Dinkinesh—is an excellent 'dress rehearsal' for Lucy as it continues its journey toward the cooler, outer regions of the solar system, according to NASA's Erin Morton in a statement earlier this week. Lucy's next milestone is set to occur in August 2027, when the spacecraft will finally start to explore the Jupiter Trojan asteroids in earnest—starting with Eurybates, a carbonaceous asteroid so big that it has its own satellite, Queta.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA has discovered an interstellar comet that's wandered into our backyard. The space agency spotted the quick-moving object with the sky-surveying Atlas telescope in Chile earlier this week, and confirmed it was a comet from another star system. It's officially the third known interstellar object to pass through our solar system and poses no threat to Earth.
