Japan urges evacuation of small island as 1,000 quakes hit region

Khaleej Times03-07-2025
Japanese authorities urged the 89 residents of a small southern island to evacuate after a strong earthquake on Thursday, the latest of more than 1,000 recent jolts to hit the area.
Residents were urged to evacuate to "a school playground in Akuseki Island", a municipal official told AFP.
Akuseki is part of the Tokara island chain south of Kyushu region, which has been rattled by 1,031 quakes since June 21.
No major damage has been reported.
On Thursday, a 5.5 magnitude quake struck near Akuseki. The previous day a jolt of the same size was also recorded.
Seven of the 12 remote Tokara Islands are inhabited, with around 700 residents in total.
There was no tsunami risk from Thursday's quake, according to Ayataka Ebita, director of the earthquake and tsunami observation division of the Japan Meteorological Agency.
"In areas where the tremors were strong, there is an increased risk of collapsed houses and landslides," he told reporters.
"Please be aware of earthquakes of similar magnitude for the foreseeable future," he said.
A similar period of intense seismic activity in the Tokara area occurred in September 2023, when 346 earthquakes were recorded, according to the JMA.
Japan is one of the world's most seismically active countries, sitting on top of four major tectonic plates along the western edge of the Pacific "Ring of Fire".
The archipelago, home to around 125 million people, typically experiences around 1,500 jolts every year and accounts for about 18 percent of the world's earthquakes.
In 2011, a magnitude-9.0 quake triggered a tsunami that left 18,500 people dead or missing and caused a devastating meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
Quakes are extremely hard to predict, but in January a government panel marginally increased the probability of a major jolt in the Nankai Trough off Japan in the next 30 years to 75-82 percent.
The government then released a new estimate in March saying that such a "megaquake" and subsequent tsunami could cause as many as 298,000 deaths and damages of up to $2 trillion.
This week, the government released a report saying much more needed to be done to prepare for such a megaquake.
Some foreign tourists have held off coming to Japan due to unfounded fears fanned by social media that a major quake is imminent.
Causing particular concern is a manga comic reissued in 2021 which predicted a major disaster on July 5, 2025.
"We are aware that such tales are circulating, but that is a hoax," Ebita at the JMA said.
"With today's science and technology, it is not possible to predict earthquakes."

Kering and Qatar's Mayhoola considering Valentino sale, Italian daily reports

MILAN (Reuters) -Qatari investment fund Mayhoola and Gucci-owner Kering are considering selling their jointly-owned fashion house Valentino, an Italian daily reported on Friday. The decision is part of a wider review by Kering of its holdings, as the luxury group faces growing debt, a global slowdown in luxury demand and is under pressure on the bourse, Corriere della Sera newspaper added. The French giant bought a 30% stake in Valentino in 2023 for $1.7 billion with a commitment to buy the remaining 70% by 2028, hoping to create a second flagship label rooted in high couture. Kering's new Chief Executive and former boss at carmaker Renault, Luca de Meo, due to start on September 15, will handle the issue, the newspaper reported, adding that Kering declined to comment and Mayhoola did not respond to a request for comment. Valentino said last month its CEO Jacopo Venturini was on sick leave. The Rome-based fashion house, which last year named star designer Alessandro Michele as creative director to replace long-serving Pierpaolo Piccioli, reported a 2% drop at constant exchange rates in revenues last year, to 1.31 billion euros ($1.52 billion). University team compete in robot football contest

A team from the University of Hertfordshire have travelled to Salvador in Brazil to take part in a global football competition involving autonomous robots. The aim of RoboCup 2025 is to develop humanoid robots capable of defeating the human FIFA World Cup champions by 2050 in a fair match. Daniel Polani, a professor of artificial intelligence at the university and part of the team, said the AI robots "are nowhere close to the ability of a Messi or a Ronaldo because running is a very difficult task". He added: "At this stage we are happy if they can walk without falling down." RoboCup, which first started in 1997, has long served as a proving ground for AI and robotics researchers and this year's competition involves 250 teams from 37 countries. "We have been playing with humanoid robots which look like humans and the robots we use are not allowed to use anything that humans don't have," said Mr Polani, who is also on the Board of Trustees of the RoboCup Federation. "The robots are independent - they are not remote controlled because it is a competition where AI does everything," he said. The only remote aspect is the whistle to stop and start the game, he added. Mr Polani said the idea behind the competition was if you want to make intelligent machines you have to put them in the real world and "if they mess up they mess up themselves". "It is a really difficult task to kick and not fall down and you have to contend with 22 different robots working in a coordinated fashion," he added. The University of Hertfordshire sent its first team to RoboCup in 2002, as it believed it was "where the future of robotics will lie", said Mr Polani. He said the French and Japanese teams were good, but he did not think that they would do well this year. RoboCup takes place from 17-21 July alongside other competitions such as where robots are tested in rescue situations and perform household tasks. Organisers said the competition was expected to attract 150,000 spectators. Livestream coverage was also available throughout the event on Twitch and YouTube.
