Special Olympics Indiana's Summer Games begin in Terre Haute

Yahoo06-06-2025
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Thousands of athletes, volunteers, and supporters from around the state of Indiana are in Terre Haute this weekend for Special Olympics Indiana's biggest event of the year.
Athlete Hunter Canada said the feeling is amazing.
'It's pretty entertaining and fun just being out there with all the other people competing', Canada said. 'I'm wishing everybody good luck.'
Athletes compete in a number of different events like swimming on the campus of Rose-Hulman and volleyball, track and field, and pickleball at Indiana State.
One duo from Jackson County, AJ Engel and Hunter Canada, claimed the top two spots in their 800-meter race.
'I was expecting him to pass me at the end, but we were expecting to get first and second', Canada said.
'It feels good to take first and second', Engel said. 'The runners were good competition.'
Some athletes have been competing for their entire lives.
'I've done this for as long as I remember', Engel said. 'I've run track in middle school and high school. I just really feel like Special Olympics is good.'
Other, like Madison Carter, have chosen the volunteer route.
'I've actually been doing this for eight years now', Carter said. 'I started out in high school doing Best Buddies, unified track, peer tutoring, you name it, I've probably done it. Then I've been in volleyball since I was nine years old, so I reached out to somebody here at Special Olympics. I started as a volunteer, then became a part of the management team, and now I'm the manager of it all.'
All involved agree the best part about the event is coming together.
'The camaraderie and building those relationships throughout the entire experience here is like no other', Carter said. 'I've seen people since I started eight years ago, all the way to new people this year. I think those relationships are like no other.'
Events will continue in Terre Haute and on the campuses of Indiana State and Rose-Hulman through the weekend. All events are open to the public at no cost.

NHL Trade Rumors: Penguins' Bryan Rust Linked To 3 Teams

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust is one of the NHL's top trade candidates right now. With the Penguins retooling, the 33-year-old winger would have the potential to land them a significant return if they decided to trade him. Rust just set new career highs with 31 goals and 65 points in 71 games this past season, so he has raised his trade value. Furthermore, his contract is very good, as he has a reasonable $5.125 million cap hit until the end of the 2027-28 season. Thus, he could be a good fit for both playoff and non-playoff teams. Now, a few clubs are being connected to Rust. According to The Fourth Period, the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Columbus Blue Jackets are among the teams linked to Rust. After trading JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth this off-season, there is no question that the Sabres could use another top-six winger to replace him. Thus, the Sabres reportedly being interested in Rust is very easy to understand. He would give their top six and power play a significant boost if acquired. He also does not have any trade protection, so he makes a lot of sense as a target for Buffalo. With the Maple Leafs losing Mitch Marner this summer, adding another top-six right winger should be one of their top objectives moving forward. While Rust would not produce the same kind of offense as a superstar like Marner, he would still improve Toronto's forward group and be one of their key point producers if acquired. As for the Blue Jackets, they are also in a position to make a move for a player like Rust. They have a ton of cap space to work with and could use another top-six forward, so they would be a good fit for Rust. They also have plenty of potential trade assets that could be appealing to the Penguins. NHL Rumors: 2 Under-The-Radar Penguins Trade Candidates The Pittsburgh Penguins are the most popular team in the rumor mill right now. It is understandable, as Bryan Rust, Rickard Rakell, and Erik Karlsson are currently considered three of the top trade candidates in the league. Photo Credit: © Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

Former Canadiens Star Goalie Announces Retirement

A former Montreal Canadiens goalie is officially hanging up the skates. While speaking with Dennik Sport's Tomas Prokop, former Canadiens goalie Jaroslav Halak shared that he has officially retired. Halak, 40, has not played in each of the last two seasons, as his last NHL campaign was in 2022-23 with the New York Rangers. Now, his career is officially over, and it was a very good one. Halak was selected by the Canadiens with the 271st overall pick of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. From there, he spent his first four seasons in Montreal and was excellent. In 101 games as a Hab from 2006-07 to 2009-10, he had a 56-34-7 record, a .919 save percentage, and a 2.62 goals-against average. Halak also memorably appeared in 18 playoff games for the Canadiens during their 2010 run, posting a 9-9 record, a .923 save percentage, and a 2.55 goals-against average. Following this outstanding post-season performance, Halak was traded to the St. Louis Blues, as the Canadiens opted to go with Carey Price as their full-time starting goalie. In 581 career games over 17 seasons split between the Canadiens, Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks, and Rangers, Halak had a 295-189-69 record, a .915 save percentage, and a 2.50 goals-against average. Canadiens Are One Big Move Away From Perfect Off-Season It is hard not to be a fan of what the Montreal Canadiens have done this off-season. After taking a nice step forward in 2024-25, general manager Kent Hughes has improved the club's roster with some excellent moves. Among the most notable moves was acquiring defenseman Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders and trading for Zack Bolduc from the St. Louis Blues. Photo Credit: © James Guillory-Imagn Images
