Indian shares set for higher open on trade, earnings optimism

Business Recorder10 hours ago
India's stock benchmarks are poised to open higher on Thursday, supported by expectations of a trade deal with the United States and optimism over June-quarter corporate earnings.
The Gift Nifty futures were trading at 25,558.5 points, as of 7:35 a.m. IST, indicating that the Nifty 50 will open above Wednesday's close of 25,476.1.
Asian markets inched higher at the open, chiming with overnight gains on Wall Street after U.S. President Donald Trump issued final tariff notices to seven minor trading partners.
Investors await further developments as the Trump administration moves closer to a deal with its largest trading partner, the European Union. Earlier this week, the U.S. President also indicated that a deal with India was near.
Both the Nifty and Sensex indexes have remained stable so far this week.
'It appears that markets are in wait-and-watch mode, seeking clarity from U.S. trade tariff developments and the start of the corporate earnings season, the key near-term directional triggers,' said Rajesh Bhosale, analyst at Angel One.
As investors await an India-U.S. trade deal, focus is shifting to domestic earnings and structural growth drivers such as a likely rebound in urban demand and rising infrastructure-led spending, two analysts said.
Tata Consultancy Services, India's top information technology company, is scheduled to report its June-quarter results after market hours on Thursday.

India bonds flat; traders eye debt supply, RBI liquidity move

MUMBAI: Indian government bonds ended largely unchanged on Thursday as traders awaited a fresh debt supply and further cues on liquidity management from the central bank. The yield on the benchmark 10-year bond ended at 6.3156%, after closing at 6.3136% on Wednesday. Bond yields move inversely to prices. 'Market sentiment remains cautious amid tight liquidity signals from the Reserve Bank of India via Variable Rate Reserve Repos (VRRR),' Pawan Somani, founder of Infinask Advisors, said. The 10-year note has hovered between 6.28% and 6.32% since the start of the month, and the trend is likely to continue amid fresh triggers, traders said. New Delhi plans to sell bonds worth 250 billion rupees ($2.92 billion) on Friday, including a new seven-year note. RBI's liquidity withdrawal move weighs on India bond prices The note traded at around 6.25% in the 'when-issued' segment of the trading platform on Thursday. Market focus is also on liquidity levels in the banking system and on any further measures by the RBI to drain the surplus. The RBI's second liquidity-absorbing operation in four sessions on Wednesday pushed overnight rates above the floor of the policy corridor. The newly launched Secured Overnight Rupee Rate (SORR) has stayed above the floor of monetary policy corridor for the second straight session after slipping below the Standing Deposit Facility rate on Monday and Tuesday. The central bank removed 973 billion rupees via a two-day VRRR\ on Wednesday. Traders said clarity on a potential U.S.-India trade deal, which U.S. President Donald Trump said was 'close', would be a key trigger for the market. Rates India's overnight index swap rates (OIS) were mostly flat as traders awaited more cues, with the trading range shrinking across the curve. The one-year OIS rate was at 5.515%, and the two-year OIS rate was at 5.4875%. The liquid five-year OIS rate was at 5.69%.

Indian rupee ends nearly flat, importer dollar bids hinder attempts to rise

MUMBAI: The Indian rupee ended little changed on Thursday, as traders steered clear of aggressive directional bets on the currency, while routine dollar demand from importers blunted positive cues from an uptick in Asian peers. The South Asian currency has largely settled between 85 and 86 over the last two weeks, amid muted foreign portfolio flows and as traders await cues from ongoing U.S.-India trade. On the day, the rupee settled at 85.6350, barely changed from its previous close at 85.6725. Asian currencies were a tad higher on the day, while the dollar index treaded water around the 97.5 mark. As tariff threats continue to roll out of the U.S., investor sensitivity to policy changes appears to have reduced, with many wagering that the extended reciprocal tariff deadline gives countries room to negotiate. Indian rupee, forward premiums tread water with Fed minutes and tariffs in focus 'If by then (August 1) trade negotiations with large U.S. partners aren't at an advanced stage, it will be harder to ignore the higher U.S. tariff rate,' ING said in a note. 'A gradual implementation of sector-specific tariffs should do much less damage to the dollar compared to sudden, 'Liberation Day'-style measures,' the note added. India is also engaged in trade negotiations with the U.S. and is among the few large U.S. trading partners that have not yet received a letter from the White House declaring a reciprocal tariff rate. A delegation from India is expected to visit the United States soon for trade talks, a government official told reporters, as the two countries look to iron out disagreements over duties for auto components, steel and farm goods.

US copper bounces after Trump sets a tariff date, but below peak

LONDON: U.S. copper prices rebounded on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump said a 50% tariff would start on August 1, but held below their record peak due to a glut of metal already in the country and uncertainty over details. Trump signalled on Tuesday that he was imposing fresh tariffs on copper. He confirmed that and announced the date on Wednesday. The most active COMEX copper futures contract was up 2.1% to $5.60 a lb at 0945 GMT, down from a record high of $5.90 touched on Tuesday. 'I think the spike high will probably be left on its own for a little while,' said Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank in Copenhagen. 'The market will now be left with ample supplies for the foreseeable future and that's one reason why premiums in New York should not reflect the 50% tariff,' he said. 'Also, plenty of things can happen in the next three weeks.' The premium of COMEX over LME on Thursday was at $2,690 a metric ton, or 28%, down slightly from a peak hit on Tuesday. Trump copper tariffs set to spark final scramble to get metal across the border Traders anticipating copper tariffs after a probe was announced in February have shipped about a year's worth of imports so far this year to the United States. Analysts say the COMEX premium will likely ease over coming months as the stockpile is slowly eroded and the stiff tariffs hit demand. Copper prices on the Shanghai Futures Exchange came under pressure, weighed down by expectations that copper shipments to China will rise as some supplies are redirected to countries outside the U.S., a Shanghai-based metals analyst at a futures company said. The most-traded copper contract on the SHFE fell for the fifth day, down 0.4% to 78,600 yuan ($10,952.87) per ton after touching its lowest since June 23. Benchmark three-month copper on the LME rebounded on Thursday after five days of losses, rising 0.5% to $9,681.50 a ton. Among other metals, LME aluminium added 0.6% to $2,613 a ton, nickel gained 1.2% to $15,165, zinc climbed 1.2% to $2,774, lead was up 0.1% at $2,057, and tin advanced 1.2% to $33,675.
