Goldman upgrades drone play as Ukraine war shows future of defense

Goldman Sachs says combat has been "redefined" by Russia's war on Ukraine, creating an opportunity for Kratos Defense and Security Solutions as the U.S. allocates more defense dollars for drones and missile systems. The firm upgraded the company, which specializes in unmanned systems and propulsion technology, to buy from neutral in a Sunday note, alongside a $52 per share price target. Goldman's forecast implies about 13% upside from Friday's $45.84 close. Shares have already surged nearly 74% in 2025. Analyst Anthony Valentini said that Russia's war on Ukraine exemplified the need for cheap yet efficient weaponry. At the same time, he said, the Department of Defense could have a bigger appetite for that type of munitions to further cut costs without sacrificing quality. This also fits with President Donald Trump's desire to trim spending, he said. "The Ukraine conflict proved that large volumes of low-cost, technologically acceptable systems can combat exquisite platforms at a fraction of the cost," Valentini said. "We believe defense is in the early stages of a major structural change that will drive disruptive defense tech companies taking a larger share of global defense spending." He added that Kratos has "been positioning itself for the future of warfare for years" by building low cost yet "technically acceptable" products that can be made at scale, which could benefit the stock. KTOS YTD mountain Kratos stock in 2025. "Kratos has strategically invested in areas of the defense supply chain that are critical to the future of warfare and are at a key inflection point," the analyst added. "Funding is finally coming for drone programs, turbo jet and turbo fan engines are in high demand for UAS [unmanned aircraft systems] and missile systems, and both C5ISR [Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance] and space are continuing to grow at a fast clip." The analyst said he sees multiple channels for "significant growth." "The company has taken the approach of casting a wide net across many opportunities that are increasing in importance and ultimately demand," he said. "Individually, each of these opportunities have the potential to redefine the company and could change the financial framework significantly."

Solar stocks fall as Trump bill taxes components from China, phases out credits

Clean energy stocks fell on Monday as President Donald Trump's spending legislation now includes a tax on wind and solar projects using Chinese components and phases out credits faster than previous versions of the bill. Shares of NextEra Energy, the largest renewable developer in the U.S., fell 4%. Solar stocks Array Technologies, Enphase and Nextracker were down between 4% and 9%. The Senate is voting Monday on the legislation, which ends the two most important tax credits for solar and wind projects placed in service after 2027. "The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country," Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on X over the weekend. "Utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future." Previous versions of the bill were more flexible, allowing projects that began construction before 2027 to qualify for the investment and electricity production tax credits, according to Monday note from Goldman Sachs. The change "compresses project timelines and adds significant execution risk," Bank of America analyst Dimple Gosal told clients in a note Monday. "Developers with large '25 pipelines, may struggle to meet the new deadlines — potentially delaying or downsizing planned investments." The Senate legislation also slaps a tax on solar and wind projects that enter service after 2027 if they use components made in China. "The latest draft in the Senate has become more restrictive for most renewable players, moving toward a worst case outcome for solar and wind, with a few improvements for subsectors on the margin," Morgan Stanley analyst Andrew Percoco told clients in a Sunday note. To be sure, the rooftop solar industry is viewed by Wall Street as a relative winner from the bill, with Sunrun shares up more than 7% and SolarEdge trading more than 3% higher on Monday. The legislation seems to allows tax credits for leased rooftop systems to remain in place through the end of 2027, which was not the case in previous versions, according to Goldman Sachs. And First Solar is up more than 7% as the legislation seems to allow the manufacturer to claim credits for both components and final products, according to Bank of America.

Wall Street analysts bullish on Circle after blockbuster IPO, but warn on sky-high valuation

By Rashika Singh and Siddarth S (Reuters) -Wall Street brokerages began coverage of stablecoin issuer Circle Internet Group on Monday with broadly bullish ratings, though some analysts voiced concerns about its elevated valuation after the stock more than doubled since its market debut. The New York-based company's shares were down nearly 3% in premarket trading. Circle debuted this month at $69 per share in the first major IPO by a stablecoin issuer. The blockbuster flotation represents the biggest crypto listing since Coinbase's 2021 debut. The company had priced its IPO at $31 per share. J.P. Morgan, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs were the lead underwriters for the offering. After the industry-mandated quiet period expired, Barclays, Bernstein, Canaccord Genuity and Needham launched coverage with the equivalent of 'buy' ratings and price targets above $200. "CRCL is building a market-leading digital dollar stablecoin network, with a strong regulatory edge, liquidity headstart and marquee distribution partnerships. This is hard to replicate, in our view," Bernstein analysts said in a note. Circle is a blockchain infrastructure company best known for issuing USD Coin (USDC), a fully reserved, U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin used across crypto trading, payments, and decentralized finance. In June, the U.S. Senate passed the GENIUS Act with bipartisan support, marking a watershed moment for the digital asset industry by establishing the first federal regulatory framework for stablecoins. "CRCL is one of the only ways for public investors to play the blockchain infrastructure theme, and we believe stablecoins are nearing a pivotal turning point," Barclays said. However, J.P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs pointed to the stock's elevated valuation, given its rapid rise since the IPO. J.P. Morgan started coverage with the most bearish view on Wall Street - an 'underweight' rating with a price target of $80, implying a downside of 56% from the stock's last close of $180.43. "We view CRCL's business and growth attractively, but valuation appears elevated," said Goldman, as the brokerage started coverage with 'neutral' and $83 price target. Shares of Circle have surged 161% since their market debut.
