KUCHING (July 5): Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines, has placed an order for 20 additional Airbus A330-900 aircraft, effectively doubling the airline's future A330neo fleet to 40 aircraft.
The announcement was made today following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to France.
MAG first selected the A330neo in 2022 under its widebody fleet renewal programme, with a commitment for 20 aircraft, of which four have now been delivered.
Featuring an all-new premium cabin layout, the aircraft are already operating on services from Kuala Lumpur to Melbourne, Auckland and Bali.
MAG Group Managing Director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail said the A330neo continues to deliver the right balance of operational efficiency, range and cabin comfort to support the Group's network and growth strategy.
'With its enhanced fuel efficiency and flexibility across both regional and long-haul routes, the aircraft is a strong fit for our evolving market needs.
'It also allows us to offer a product that aligns with our premium positioning – streamlined, modern and designed around passenger comfort and expectations.
'This additional order reinforces our long-term vision of building a future-ready fleet that supports sustainable growth, delivers consistent value to our passengers and strengthens our competitiveness in key markets,' he added.
Meanwhile, Airbus EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry said: 'We are proud to further strengthen our relationship with MAG as it expands its A330neo fleet.'
'This repeat order is a strong endorsement of the A330neo's exceptional performance, fuel efficiency, versatility and passenger comfort as well as a testament to the aircraft's popularity among the world's premium airlines.'
Powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, the A330-900 is capable of flying 7,200 nm / 13,300 km non-stop.
The A330neo features the award-winning Airspace cabin, which offers passengers a unique experience, high level of comfort, ambience and design.
This includes more individual space, enlarged overhead bins, a new lighting system and access to the latest in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems.
At the end of May 2025, the A330 Family had won over 1,800 firm orders from more than 130 customers worldwide.
As with all in-production Airbus aircraft, the A330neo is able to operate with up to 50 per cent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a target to increase to up to 100 per cent SAF capability by 2030. Airbus aircraft anwar ibrahim lead Malaysia Aviation Group

Anwar and Modi discuss IIT campus in M'sia, investment in future-focused sectors

RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia and India have proposed to set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Malaysia, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The institute is regarded as one of the top higher learning institutions in India. Anwar said Malaysia was committed to strengthening people-to-people ties through collaboration in culture, tourism and education. He said India is exploring investment opportunities in Malaysia's future-focused sectors – the digital economy, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and aerospace. AI must serve development, not dominate, PM Anwar tells BRICS summit

RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia is championing the establishment of an Asean AI Safety Network, a regional initiative to strengthen governance and capacity in this domain, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister, who is also Asean chair, said Malaysia welcomed the BRICS' efforts in AI Governance, adding: "We support a vision of artificial intelligence that serves development, not domination – one that embeds ethics, reduces inequality, and respects human dignity." Anwar was speaking at the BRICS Leaders' Summit at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) here on Sunday (July 6). Also in attendance were Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Aziz and Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Earlier, the Prime Minister was received by Brazilian President Lula Silva upon arrival. Anwar said the meeting was held as the international order was under severe strain. The institutions meant to uphold cooperation were, he said, "faltering under the weight of new realities." "Trade is increasingly shaped by politics. Technology is framed by security. And the rules that once governed global engagement are being selectively applied or ignored," he said. Malaysia's position is straightforward - multilateralism is vital for global stability, shared prosperity, and sovereign dignity, he said. The Prime Minister said that for multilateralism to endure, it must do more than express common values. "It must deliver tangible outcomes. It must respond to the realities of a world where markets are fragmenting faster than rules can adapt." He said Asean was not passive and that economic fragmentation was intensifying - tariffs, decoupling, and shifting alliances were reshaping trade flows once thought stable. Malaysia, Anwar said, was advancing a strategy that favoured diversification over dependency, resilience over fragility, and regional agency over external prescription. "We therefore welcome BRICS' commitment to an inclusive, rules-based trading system. Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship theme – "Inclusivity and Sustainability" – aligns closely with those priorities." Anwar said the party which shaped the digital future was the question now. Technology, he noted, is now splitting along geopolitical lines. "Export controls, national security restrictions and diverging standards are creating parallel systems." Anwar also spoke about the need to stop genocide in Gaza and atrocities in Iran.

Airbus Helicopters inks two MoUs with Malaysian aerospace, defence players

(Front) Dubrule and Nonee pose for photographs during the signing ceremony. KUCHING (July 7): Airbus Helicopters is collaborating with key players in the Malaysian aerospace and defence sectors to foster industrial cooperation in aerospace technologies and enhance military helicopter maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. This follows two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed during Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin's official visit to France, underscoring shared commitment of both parties to innovation and regional security, said Airbus in a statement today. Under the first MoU, Airbus Helicopters and the Coalition of Defence Industry (CDI) Malaysia plan to pursue industrial opportunities with the latter's member companies specialising in aerospace and defence development. This MoU marks the first of its kind between Airbus and the Malaysian defence industry, establishing a dedicated framework to drive military helicopter innovations, growth, and development in the local defence sector, said Airbus. Under the second MoU, Airbus Helicopters will partner with local MRO service provider Global Turbine Asia (GTA) to advance in-country helicopter component MRO capabilities. This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen Malaysia's defence ecosystem and accelerate industrial growth in alignment with the nation's plans to acquire new helicopters for its armed forces and related governmental agencies. CDI (M) president and GTA executive chair Datuk Nonee Ashirin Mohd Radzi said they look forward to deepening the collaboration with major European industries, building on the Malaysian aerospace industry's enduring partnerships with leaders such as Airbus. 'We are committed to reinforcing these relationships and exploring new areas of cooperation, ensuring sustained innovation, growth, and long-term value for all stakeholders,' she said. Airbus Helicopters head of Asia-Pacific Vincent Dubrule said these partnerships underscore Airbus' strong commitment to Malaysia's long-term goal of building a resilient, self-reliant defence ecosystem. By deepening local industrial growth and expanding MRO capabilities, he said they are strengthening the nation's aerospace and defence sectors, supporting technological advancement, and enabling greater industrial sovereignty. 'As Malaysia looks to acquire helicopters for key missions like tactical support, combat search-and-rescue and anti-surface warfare, these partnerships aim to strengthen local expertise, promote technology transfer and build autonomy. 'Airbus sees CDI (M) and GTA as trusted partners aligned to advance these priorities,' added Dubrule.
