Inter Miami coach blasts MLS decision to discipline Lionel Messi for All-Star absence
Messi and Jordi Alba were both out due to league discipline as Inter Miami and Cincinnati played to a scoreless draw at Chase Stadium.
'Now I have a question: What if today's game was an away game?" Mascherano said afterwards. "Would you ask for Leo not to play? Because when it comes to filling stadiums and making money, no one complains.
'The thing is: This game happened to be a home game. That's the issue. I'll leave it up to you to decide.'
Mascherano also questioned officiating against Inter Miami. The club is the only team in the league to not have a penalty kick granted this season.
There were two instances against Cincinnati where they should have received a penalty call, Inter Miami contested. Luis Suarez and Fafa Picault incurred contact on two separate plays, but no penalty was awarded.
'A team that has scored as many goals as we have in MLS … zero penalties,' Mascherano said. 'Strange, considering how much we're in the area, zero penalties. I'll leave that for you to think about.'
Inter Miami did get the most controversial call of the match to go their way against Cincinnati, though.
Cincinnati's Miles Robinson scored a header (90'+3'), but appeared to hit Inter Miami defender Noah Allen in the head during the score. The play was ruled a foul on the field, and VAR wasn't enough to overturn it to a goal.
'The referee delayed the whistle to allow the opportunity for VAR to review for a possible goal. After the VAR check, the referee's decision was confirmed,' lead referee Tori Penso said in a pool report after the match.
Mascherano was seen yelling 'do your job' at least twice towards officials, including Penso, resulting in a yellow card being shown in the first-year coach's direction in the 70th minute.
Both sides earned one point in the standings after the draw. Inter Miami maintained fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference with 42 points, while Cincinnati (49 points) dropped to second place behind Philadelphia (50 points).

However, he also allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings as the Dodgers posted a 5-2 victory. 'I feel like every start I'm kind of learning and getting better," said Burns, who is 0-3 with a 6.26 ERA. "I mean, the numbers don't show, but you know, it's been really fun to go through the process and learn.' Burns — who had 10 strikeouts against the Dodgers — joined Raisel Iglesias as the only Reds pitchers with three straight double-digit strikeout outings. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Burns is the eighth Major Leaguer age 22 or younger and the first since Pittsburgh's Oliver Perez in 2004 to post three straight 10-strikeout games since the mound was moved to its current distance in 1893. He's also the seventh rookie to do it in three straight games and the fifth big leaguer to have at least 10 punchouts in three of his first six games. 'We're trying to build for the future with him and win now with him. I think the kid is doing a good job," Reds manager Terry Francona said. Burns — the second overall pick in the 2024 MLB amateur draft — has faced some of the toughest lineups in the majors since being called up in late June. Two of his six starts have come against last year's World Series participants. His debut was against the Yankees on June 24 and he faced the defending champion Dodgers on Monday night. Burns' second start was at Fenway Park in Boston as the Red Sox jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. 'Yeah, it's why I play the game, dream about playing (and) facing these guys like that, going against a lineup like that. So I'm having a lot of fun,' Burns said. 'I'm blessed to be up here, and I just want to keep learning and get better.' The one thing the Reds could help Burns with is run support. They have plated only four runs when he has been on the mound in his starts and in only one of his outings has he left with Cincinnati in the lead. 'You don't have time to sit up here and learn slow, honestly," Burns said. "The boys want to playoff push, and I want to be a part of that, so I got to go out there and perform.' Despite the record, Francona doesn't see any frustration from Burns. 'I think he's fine. He's a very mature kid or he wouldn't be here,' Francona said. It doesn't get easier for Burns. His next start is likely to be Saturday against the Atlanta Braves in the MLB Speedway Classic at Tennessee's Bristol Motor Speedway, where more than 85,000 tickets have been sold. With Dodgers battling more injuries, prospect Alex Freeland could make MLB debut
The Dodgers are dealing with more injuries to their lineup. As a result, one of their top prospects could get his first big-league opportunity this week. Alex Freeland, the top-ranked infielder in the Dodgers' farm system, will be in Cincinnati on Tuesday in case either Tommy Edman (who had his lingering ankle injury flare up on him Sunday while rounding the bases) or Hyeseong Kim (who has been battling a shoulder issue over the last week) needs to go on the injured list, manager Dave Roberts said after the Dodgers' Monday night win over the Reds. 'We're just kind of trying to figure out ... if we do need to make a move for one of those guys." Freeland, a third-round pick in 2022 out of the University of Central Florida, is the team's No. 3 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline and the 35th-ranked prospect in baseball. The 23-year-old switch-hitter has spent all season with triple-A Oklahoma City, where he has batted .253 with 12 home runs, 71 RBIs and .799 OPS in 94 games. Now, he might get his first crack at the big-league roster, with the Dodgers facing another round of injury headaches following Monday's game. In the short term, Kim's shoulder injury appears to be the more pressing issue. The South Korean rookie has struggled mightily at the plate lately, with an 0-for-3 performance Monday leaving him just three for 24 since July 19. 'You can just see offensively with the bat, he's just not himself right now,' Roberts said. Edman, however, represents the bigger long-term concern for the Dodgers to manage, with his ankle injury lingering since early May. 'It's something that's kind of always there,' Edman said. 'But I would say it's been pretty normal.' At least it was until Sunday, when Edman said he 'had a little tweak of it' while running the bases at Fenway Park. While Edman was not available for Monday's game, he maintained optimism he could avoid what would be a second injured list this season and be back in the lineup Tuesday. 'I don't feel like this is that big a deal,' he said. 'I was just at a point where I didn't feel like I could run full speed today. I got some good treatment today so hopefully I'll be back available tomorrow.' Still, the Dodgers could decide that an extended break for the utilityman is warranted — especially since he has been unable to play outfield while trying to manage his injury. 'Obviously, if I couldn't hit him tonight, for him to not to be able to play three innings of defense, isn't a great feeling,' Roberts said. Freeland will be waiting in the wings just in case. But the line of, are you still hurting the team, hurting yourself, that's the thing that the organization, the training staff, we've got to make that decision."
