
Ludhiana: Health dept destroys 67kg of spurious paneer during food safety drive in city
The food safety officials of the local health department on Thursday carried out a comprehensive inspection drive to enforce food safety standards throughout the city. A significant joint enforcement action, involving the mandi officer and health department officials, resulted in the destruction of 67 kg of paneer at Sabzi Mandi, Ludhiana. The action was followed amid strong suspicions of substandard quality. In addition, two more paneer samples were taken for thorough laboratory testing.
District health officer, Ludhiana, Dr Amarjit Kaur, emphasised the department's commitment to public well-being, stating, 'Public health is our top priority and we are committed to ensure that food businesses adhere to strict safety standards. The destruction of substandard paneer and the collection of samples for testing reflect our zero-tolerance policy towards food adulteration. We urge all vendors to comply with FSSAI regulations to avoid stringent legal action.'
As a precautionary measure, the mandi officer issued a stern warning to vendors, instructing them to stop the sale of paneer in Sabzi Mandi.
Samples of various food items, including paneer, milk, pulses, fortified edible oils, used cooking oils, ice cream, and sharbat, were collected from key areas across Ludhiana, such as Sabzi Mandi, Kumkalan, Machhiwara, Chandigarh Road, Samrala Chowk, and Shingar Cinema Road.
All collected samples have been dispatched to an authorised laboratory for in-depth analysis. Future actions will be determined and executed strictly under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The officials highlighted the enforcement of critical FSSAI guidelines to ensure food safety; routine sampling of high-risk food items; mandatory use of fortified staples, such as edible oils enriched with Vitamins A and D; prohibition of reusing cooking oil beyond permissible limits; and Immediate disposal of unsafe or substandard food items.
The department issued a clear warning to all food business operators, stressing the imperative to strictly adhere to hygiene, labeling, and storage norms. Non-compliance will lead to strict legal consequences.

Opposing ₹20-lakh bond, fee hike, doctors to boycott OPD services in Punjab on Monday
Accusing the Punjab government of making medical education unaffordable, resident doctors and MBBS interns of government medical colleges in Punjab have announced to shut down outpatient department (OPD) services across the state from Monday. Medical services in all three tertiary healthcare institutes in the state are likely to be hit, but emergency services would remain functional, they said. The state medical education department has increased the tuition fees by 5% for the upcoming academic session. The Punjab government claimed that the fee hike was a regular exercise as per the 2020 notification issued by the medical education department. It is the Punjab government's recent move to impose a ₹ 20 lakh bond on MBBS students and a significant hike in the tuition fees that has prompted the doctors to go on the strike. HT had on June 19 reported about the state government's bond policy for the students seeking admission to MBBS and BDS courses in government medical and dental colleges, aiming at addressing the acute shortage of doctors in the state. As per the new policy, the MBBS students admitted from the academic session 2025-26 onwards will have to either serve in government health institutions for two years after completing their course or pay a bond amount of ₹ 20 lakh. For the students taking admission under the all-India quota, the period is reduced to one year of government service. The state medical education department has increased the tuition fees by 5% for the upcoming academic session. In all, if hostel and mess fees are included, a student needs at least ₹ 13-14 lakh to don the white coat. Prior to the decision of holding of protest, a delegation of resident doctors representing the Government Medical Colleges in Patiala and Amritsar besides Guru Gobind Singh Medical College & Hospital in Faridkot, under the Forum of Resident Doctors, Punjab, on Sunday had held a meeting with principal secretary of medical education & research. In the meeting, the delegation conveyed the 'unjust' burden of the 'unconstitutional' bond policy and the 'exorbitant fee hike', demanding immediate rollback of these orders. The doctors also demanded hike in stipends for resident doctors and interns, linking stipend structure with the current dearness allowance (DA) index, reinstatement of the non-practicing allowance (NPA) for PCMS doctors and non-compliance of government hospitals' administration with National Medical Council's SOPs. The government has sought two-week time to address the issues, the Forum of Resident Doctors said. Dr Milanpreet, member, RDA Patiala, said, 'The fee hike and introduction of bond policy for MBBS interns should immediately be rolled back by the government. Instead of hiking stipend of MBBS interns and resident doctors, which is the lowest among the neighbouring states, the government is hiking fees, making it impossible for the students from humble backgrounds to fulfil their dreams to don the white coat.' He said the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government had announced in its first budget to open 16 government medical colleges in the five-year tenure. However, none has come up so far, he added.

Officials said if everything goes as per plan, the 200 bed hospital will become the first medical facility in J&K having underground facilities which will be utilised during exigency or war like situation. Medical superintendent district hospital, Poonch, Dr Shafeeq, said that during four days of shelling in March the doctors helped every injured patient. 'Almost all the patients were treated here. Only a few injured were shifted to Jammu Medical College. We have almost all facilities and staff to deal with such emergencies.' He, however, said that the government had big plans to re-equip the district hospital in Poonch. 'A proposal has been sent to upgrade the district hospital with an underground emergency, OT and staff accommodation. Even bullet proof ambulances are on cards. I am very much hopeful this project or infrastructure development will be completed within two years.' He said the hospital has around 200 staff members, including 35 doctors. 'Here are 15 posts of doctors vacant which will also be filled.' The locals acknowledged that when district officers, even head of the district, left the Poonch town towards safer places, the doctors and other medical staff were present in the hospital, however the lack of equipment was the biggest impediment. 'Our district hospital doesn't have a ventilator. My husband, after receiving splinters along with his brother, walked into the hospital and died two hours later. Sometimes, I think better equipment and facilities could have saved my husband. The doctors were present in hospital but they lacked the latest equipment,' said Harpreet Kaur whose husband Amarjit Singh succumbed to injuries in the hospital. Gulzar Ahmad, who owns a shop outside the hospital, said the recent shelling is a warning that our district hospital should be well equipped... 'The hospital despite being decades old has many shortcomings. After all top political leaders, including home minister, Amit Shah J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah and leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited Poonch and interacted with locals there is a ray of hope the facilities and infrastructure will be upgraded.' Medical superintendent, however, said they had put 12 ambulances in service during four days of shelling. 'We treated dozens of injured persons and shifted only a few people to higher centres. The medical staff without caring for their saved others.'

Delhi's clear air project aimed at providing safe zone: Govt
The Delhi government aims to create a safe outdoor space for citizens to go on morning walks during the peak pollution season, Delhi environment minister Manjinder Sirsa said on Sunday, during an inspection of Nehru Park, where the government is planning to install 150 outdoor air purifiers in a pilot project. If the study confirms both impact and practicality, similar 'Clean Air Zones' could be considered at Connaught Place, Khan Market and other high-footfall locations, they said. 'AQI (air quality index) is a big challenge in Delhi. We are conducting a study in Nehru Park…We are trying to determine if we can lower the AQI in a particular location. If this project is successful, this area will have nearly 50% lesser AQI than the rest of Delhi. When pollution is bad, doctors ask everyone to not go outside, in such a situation there should be an area where people can come for a walk or jog,' Sirsa said. Sirsa said the devices—which can be up to nine feet tall—that primarily filter out particulate matter having a diameter of 2.5 microns or less (PM2.5), will be spread across the 85-acre park and maintain 'good' air quality even during peak pollution periods. Each purifier will cover approximately 600 square metres and requires approval from the New Delhi Municipal Council before installation can begin, Sirsa had said on Friday. Delhi grapples with hazardous air pollution levels that peak in the transition to winter. The move to install air purifiers follows the closure of two expensive smog towers that authorities deemed ineffective, after the then Aam Aadmi Party government touted them as a first-of-its-kind solution to the city's air crisis. The new project will be carried out through a corporate social responsibility (CSR) partnership with private firm Umeandus, which has tested the technology at four locations, including Anand Vihar, at a petrol pump in Jangpura, New Moti Bagh and outside the Taj Ambassador hotel. Officials said each machine costs around ₹ 5 lakh and the project will be funded through CSR initiatives. The initiative forms part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's broader air quality strategy, including its manifesto promise to halve Delhi's pollution levels by 2030. Sirsa said, 'We are doing a lot of things to lower the AQI in Delhi. Very soon, Delhi will also see artificial rain, the efforts of which have been ongoing for nearly 10 years. Our government will achieve that in about four months.' Earlier this month, the government also released a 'Mitigation Action Plan', featuring over 1,000 water sprinklers, 140 anti-smog guns, cloud seeding experiments, audits of pollution under control centres every six months, installation of automatic number plate recognition cameras at Delhi's border points for end-of-life vehicles, and inducting 5,000 additional electric buses. A release from Sirsa's office said: 'This proposed initiative is part of Delhi's broader Environmental Action Plan 2025 which includes reviving long-pending artificial rain projects, daily mechanical sweeping, mist spraying, and enforcement of construction norms. Anti-smog guns have been made mandatory for large construction sites, and real-time compliance monitoring is underway. Legacy landfill bio-mining is actively progressing at Ghazipur, Bhalswa, and Okhla, aiming for permanent removal of hazardous waste.' The field inspection at Nehru Park was conducted by Sirsa and Public Works Department (PWD) minister Pravesh Verma along with officials from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and PWD. 'Since we have formed the government, our cabinet minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and his department have taken many steps in lowering pollution and AQI in Delhi. Road infrastructure is also important for air quality. We have also requested a funding of ₹ 1,000 crore from the central government for this. We hope this fund will soon be released for new roads and flyover projects,' Verma said on Sunday.
