Oklahoma doctor accused of killing young daughter and faking a drowning at Florida rental home
Dr. Neha Gupta, a 36-year-old pediatrician, was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail in Oklahoma City on Tuesday. She is accused of first-degree murder in Miami-Dade County, an arrest warrant states.
Gupta 'attempted to conceal the killing of the deceased victim by staging an accidental drowning within the swimming pool of a rental property,' a Miami-Dade sheriff's homicide detective wrote in an affidavit obtained by The Associated Press.
In addition to facing the murder charge in Florida, she is accused of fleeing to the Oklahoma City area where she lives to avoid prosecution in Florida, according to jail records. Gupta is jailed without bond, and Florida authorities are seeking her return to Miami to face the murder charge.
The records do not list an attorney for Gupta who could be reached for comment on her behalf.
Gupta told investigators that she was sleeping with her daughter Aria at the Airbnb rental home in El Portal, north of Miami, when she heard a noise around 3:20 a.m. on June 27. She noticed a sliding-glass door in the bedroom that led to the outdoor patio was open. She then found Aria under water and unresponsive in the deep end of the pool, the affidavit states.
Gupta said she tried to save the girl, but told the detective that she doesn't know how to swim and was unable to get Aria out of the water.
Police and firefighters arrived and performed CPR on the girl, but Aria was pronounced dead at a hospital before dawn.
A doctor who performed an autopsy at the medical examiner's office did not find water in the child's lungs or stomach, and that 'based on these findings she was able to rule out drowning as being the cause of death,' the detective wrote. Dr. Tuyet Tran also advised authorities that she believes the child was dead before being placed in the pool, the detective wrote.
The cause and manner of death are pending, but Tran found injuries such as bruising within the girl's cheeks. Tran's preliminary findings are that these injuries 'are consistent with asphyxiation by smothering," the affidavit states.
Police have not revealed any possible motive in the case. The detective noted in the affidavit that Gupta shares custody of the child with her ex-husband, who told detectives that he and his ex-wife are involved in an ongoing custody battle over the girl.
The ex-husband also told detectives that he was unaware that Gupta and the child had traveled to South Florida. Based on surveillance video and Airbnb records, investigators determined that Gupta and her daughter were the sole occupants of the rental unit, the affidavit states.
Gupta practiced medicine at Oklahoma Children's Hospital, part of the University of Oklahoma's health system, according to records from the Oklahoma Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision. The university's faculty directory showed that she has also been an assistant professor at the university's health sciences center.
The University of Oklahoma and its health system released a statement this week saying that Gupta has been 'suspended from patient care, given notice of termination, and was no longer seeing patients at the health system as of May 30, 2025.'
Gupta has also been given a 'notice of termination' by the university, the statement said.

John Belfield jailed for torture murder of love rival
A drug dealer who tortured and murdered a love rival has been given a life sentence. John Belfield, 31, was one of a four-strong gang that killed Thomas Campbell in Tameside after 38-year-old Mr Campbell started a relationship with Belfield's former partner, Demi Belfield for 34 years and 261 days at Manchester Crown Court, Mr Justice Graham, told him he had had "no doubt you took pleasure in his pain".There were cries of "rot in hell" from the public gallery as Belfield, 29, was sentenced. Pupils barricaded themselves in cupboard after fatal school stabbing, jury hears
Pupils locked themselves in a school cupboard and barricaded the door after a girl screamed 'someone's been stabbed, there's blood all over', a teenager has told a court. A jury in the trial of a 15-year-old boy accused of murdering Harvey Willgoose, also 15, at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, was played a pre-recorded police interview with the boy on Friday morning. Jurors have seen footage of how Harvey was stabbed in the heart in a courtyard at the school during the lunch break on February 3. In his video interview, the boy said he was in a detention room in the school when a girl came in. 'She ran upstairs and started screaming 'someone's been stabbed, there's blood all over',' he told detectives. 'Everyone was, like, screaming.' The boy said the group of students he was with 'ran into a storage cupboard in the detention hall so we were safe, locked ourselves in and barricaded the door'. The teenager said he did not need to be told the boy who had been stabbed was Harvey, because '(the defendant) always carried a weapon and Harvey was having a bit of an argument with him'. The boy described how Harvey and the defendant had been pushing each other at break time earlier that day, but he thought they were just 'messing around'. 'I thought it was a joke,' he said. And the witness said the pair 'squared up to each other' later in the morning. Asked about the defendant carrying weapons, the boy said: 'Since he joined the school he used to carry them a lot.' He said he 'carried a little axe' and 'different types of knives'. The boy told the detectives: 'He would either show me or tell me to feel the outside of his trousers and there would be an imprint of the top of an axe or something.' He said this was a few months before the fatal incident. The jurors have been told that the defendant has admitted manslaughter but denies murder. He has also admitted possession of a knife on school premises. The trial has also heard about previous incidents in the school involving the defendant, including one five days before Harvey was stabbed which led to the school going into lockdown. According to prosecutors, two members of staff physically intervened in a dispute between two other students and the defendant had to be restrained as he tried to get involved. The jury has been told it was the defendant's claim that one boy had a knife that led the school to go into lockdown, although the police who responded never found a weapon. Harvey was not in school that day. The teenager giving evidence on Friday morning said 'there wasn't an issue' between Harvey and the defendant until this lockdown incident. Addressing the jury earlier this week, Gul Nawaz Hussain KC, defending, said: '(The defendant) did not set out to kill or seriously hurt anyone. 'The defence say (the defendant's) actions that day were the end result of a long period of bullying, poor treatment and violence, things that built one upon another until he lost control and did tragically what we've all seen.'
