
Doctor warns 'dangerous' leftover rice and pasta mistake is putting lives at risk
It's common practice to save excess food or takeaway for the next day to avoid wastage. The process for most foods is straightforward: let it cool, then refrigerate.
However, an American ER doctor, Joe Whittington, has raised alarm bells about preserving any dishes containing rice or pasta. In a TikTok video, he reacted to another user's post recounting the tragic tale of a 20-year-old man who died after consuming five-day-old pasta that hadn't been refrigerated.
The young man was studying in Belgium when he tragically lost his life in 2008 after eating spaghetti leftovers, which he had prepared five days earlier and left out at room temperature instead of refrigerating.
Soon after consuming the pasta, he fell ill with severe vomiting and gastrointestinal symptoms, and by the following morning, he was found dead. An autopsy revealed acute liver failure, and tests showed high levels of a bacterium known as Bacillus cereus in the pasta, according to the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.
In his video, Dr Joe cautioned that although most of us wouldn't eat five-day-old pasta anyway, Bacillus cereus can develop in pasta and rice dishes rapidly, exposing you to risks within hours rather than days.
He elaborated: 'This 20-year-old man died of a condition that's commonly referred to as 'fried rice syndrome'. This is a condition in which you have bacterial overgrowth if pasta or rice is left at room temperature for too long.
'In medical school, we're taught the phrase 'Reheat rice? Be serious!' to remember which bacteria [b. cereus] causes this condition.
'So, how long is too long? You should not eat pasta or rice left at room temperature, unrefrigerated, for more than two hours.'
The NHS advises that rice should be cooled within an hour of cooking and then immediately stored in the fridge or freezer. It should also be consumed within 24 hours and never reheated more than once.
Viewers of Dr Joe's video had mixed reactions. Many claimed they've never fallen ill after consuming pasta or rice that has been left at room temperature for over two hours.
However, some highlighted that the two-hour rule doesn't guarantee food poisoning or death from eating rice or pasta left on the kitchen counter. This is merely when the bacteria begin to multiply, meaning your risk of food poisoning escalates the longer it is left out. What to do if you have food poisoning
Food poisoning is typically not severe and generally improves within a week. Symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea can often be managed at home, with the key being to stay hydrated to avoid dehydration.
It's also crucial to get plenty of rest and eat when possible – but steer clear of fatty or spicy foods, which could further irritate your sensitive stomach. The NHS also recommends avoiding fruit juice or fizzy drinks, as these can exacerbate diarrhoea.

High lead levels have led to a lease dispute and the sudden closure of an Algiers Point day care. Why it matters: The closure leaves 30 young New Orleanians and their families without day care, and raises questions about why state officials didn't make sure a lead test had happened before it even opened. Zoom in: The Crescent School announced its closure July 18 after a student was diagnosed with lead poisoning, day care owner Liza Drennon tells Axios New Orleans. When the diagnosis arrived, the student's home and the day care were tested, a Louisiana Department of Health spokesperson confirmed. Elevated lead levels were found both in the soil outside the school, where kids often play throughout the day, and in the dust inside its historic Algiers Point building, Drennon says. One of the city's oldest neighborhoods, it's known to have a denser concentration of lead in its soil. But the levels at the school were so high, Drennon says, she was forced to close immediately, pending remediation. Caveat: It's not clear if the student's diagnosis stemmed directly from exposure at the school, or whether other sources played a role. Drennon declined to put Axios in touch with the family, citing their request for privacy. Threat level: There is no safe level of lead for drinking water, according to the EPA, and soil contamination is of particular concern when children play in it. But like many other American cities built on aging infrastructure, New Orleans is grappling with high levels of the substance, which was commonly used in early construction. A massive project to discover and remove the city's lead water pipes, for example, has been in the works for years, but now faces delays due to contractor issues, the Times-Picayune reports. How it works: The day care facility should have been lead-tested before it opened its doors, according to an LDH spokeswoman, citing state law. While the Louisiana Department of Education ultimately licenses these facilities, it relies on LDH to ensure compliance with health guidelines, an LDOE spokesman said. But LDH's "pre-opening inspection" does not include lead testing, and documents outlining LDOE's physical facility requirements don't mention lead. Rather, LDH says it requires testing "only when LDH receives mandatory notification of a case of lead poisoning or lead exposure." In other words, Drennon was legally required to have the facility lead-tested, but it doesn't appear to be anyone's job to make sure she did it. Drennon says the Crescent School was fully licensed, with a license renewal from the Department of Education arriving just days before the student's lead test results. "I went through countless health inspections, fire inspections and Department of Education inspections," she says, noting that she wasn't aware of any specific lead test requirement. Modern Health's new workplace report finds 75% blame financial stress for fueling burnout and hurting productivity, 79% sacrifice mental health to meet work demands and 96% want preventative mental health support SAN FRANCISCO, July 23, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new report from Modern Health, a global premium mental health solution provider, reveals a troubling picture of how Gen Z and Millennial employees are faring: only 16% rate their current mental health as excellent, with the vast majority grappling with anxiety fueled by economic uncertainty and financial stress that is taxing work productivity and personal time. In a survey of 1,000 American professionals aged 18 to 44, 79% not only feel anxious from economic uncertainty, concerningly they are also sacrificing their mental health to meet work demands. "Our latest report reveals that many of today's young workers are quietly pushing through mounting mental health challenges just to keep up at work," said Matt Levin, CEO of Modern Health. "They're not getting the support they need, which should be a wake-up call for employers. Anxiety is the New Cost of Living Financial anxiety and economic uncertainty are a key driver of mental health challenges for today's employees. Three in four say financial stress is fueling their burnout and hurting their productivity, 76% say financial anxiety is disrupting their sleep, mood and energy and directly impacting their productivity at work, and 68% say financial anxiety regularly interferes with their ability to do their jobs effectively. Financial and economic concerns are also dissuading employees from taking positive professional and personal actions in their lives. A resounding 74% of employees say they've delayed taking time off work due to financial concerns, while more than half (55%) have postponed seeking mental health care for the same reason. Even more concerning, 69% say they're staying in toxic job environments or avoiding necessary career changes due to economic fears. Repercussions of Hustle Culture The report reveals a troubling level of skepticism among younger employees when it comes to their employers' commitment to mental health. A striking 71% believe their employer uses mental health initiatives to mask a toxic culture, while 61% describe their company culture as flawed. Over half (53%) say their employer encourages self-care but makes it nearly impossible to practice. This erosion of trust is potentially fueling an unhealthy pace of work and worsening mental health in the workplace. A high majority (79%) say they routinely sacrifice their mental health to keep up with work demands, and 77% admit to checking emails during PTO, or avoiding time off altogether for fear of falling behind. Even when employees do take time off, 68% report feeling guilty, worrying it will be viewed as unproductive, or admit feeling pressure to "power through." Just 21% of employees say they can truly unplug without pressure from work. Alarmingly, 77% say they've worked through a mental health crisis because they felt they couldn't take a break. Retinol — the milder, over-the-counter cousin of prescription-strength retinoids — is a vitamin A-derived powerhouse that tackles everything from fine lines to acne. 'It's a cornerstone for increasing cell turnover, smoothing texture, improving pigmentation and stimulating collagen,' Engelman explained. 'It really is the gold standard in anti-aging.' Still, most people aren't using it. Studies show only about a quarter of American women and one in ten US men include retinol in their skincare routines. 'It's one of the most well-studied ingredients we have in dermatology, and yet people are still hesitant, either because they've had one bad experience or because they're worried about irritation,' Engelman said. Exfoliating — whether with chemicals, scrubs or tools — helps clear the buildup, revealing a brighter, smoother complexion. Over time, exfoliating can even boost the production of collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm, elastic, and wrinkle-free. But going overboard can backfire. 4 Before exfoliating, make sure to wash your face with a gentle cleaner. Svitlana – 'I see a lot of patients with compromised skin barriers because they're using too many acids, too frequently, or layering physical and chemical exfoliants without realizing the cumulative effect,' Engelman said. The result? Inflamed, reactive skin that's more prone to breakouts and dullness. 'Exfoliation should be thoughtful, not aggressive,' Engelman warned. 'It's about supporting the skin, not scrubbing it into submission.' For oily or normal skin, experts generally recommend exfoliating 2-3 times a week. If your skin is dry or sensitive, you may only need to do it once per week. 4 While skipping washing your face one night probably won't cause lasting damage, consistently neglecting this step can harm your skin's health and appearance. Clueless cleansing In surveys, a staggering 80% of Americans admit to making at least one mistake when cleansing their face — including half of men and women who regularly skip washing before bedtime. Failing to wash your face, especially if you wear makeup, can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, dullness and premature aging over time. Experts recommend washing your face with a gentle cleanser in the morning and at night to remove sweat, oil, dirt and debris that build up throughout the day and while you're asleep. If you wear makeup or sunscreen, Engelman advises double cleansing at night. 'An oil-based cleanser first, then a gentle second cleanse to remove residue,' she said. 'It helps keep the skin clear, the barrier intact, and preps the skin to actually absorb your serums and treatments. Without that clean canvas, even the best products won't perform.' 'At the end of the day, I'd always rather see someone with a few consistent, thoughtful steps than a long, chaotic list of products that don't work well together,' Engelman said.
