PM Modi addresses International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure 2025
The Prime Minister also extended his best wishes for the upcoming United Nations Oceans Conference.
Highlighting the theme of the conference, 'Shaping a Resilient Future for Coastal Regions,' PM Modi underscored the vulnerability of coastal regions and islands to natural disasters and climate change. He cited recent disasters, including Cyclone Remal in India and Bangladesh, Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean, Typhoon Yagi in South-east Asia, Hurricane Helene in the United States, Typhoon Usagi in the Philippines, and Cyclone Chido in parts of Africa. PM Modi emphasised that these disasters have caused significant damage to lives and property, reinforcing the need for resilient infrastructure and proactive disaster management.
Recalling India's past experiences with devastating disasters, including the super-cyclone of 1999 and the tsunami of 2004, the Prime Minister emphasised how India adapted and rebuilt with resilience, constructing cyclone shelters across vulnerable areas and contributing to the establishment of a tsunami warning system benefiting 29 countries.
Underlining the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure's (CDRI) ongoing work with 25 Small Island Developing States to build resilient homes, hospitals, schools, energy systems, water security measures, and early warning systems, PM Modi expressed his appreciation for the presence of representatives from the Pacific Indian Ocean, and Caribbean regions, and welcomed the African Union's participation in the coalition.
Drawing attention to key global priorities, the Prime Minister outlined five key topics. First, the importance of integrating disaster resilience courses, modules, and skill development programs into higher education to build a skilled workforce equipped to tackle future challenges. Second, he stressed the need for a global digital repository to document best practices and learnings from countries that have faced disasters and rebuilt with resilience.
PM Modi underscored that disaster resilience requires innovative financing and called for the creation of actionable programs to ensure developing nations have access to necessary funds as the third priority. Fourthly, the Prime Minister reaffirmed India's recognition of Small Island Developing States as Large Ocean Countries and emphasised the need for special attention to their vulnerabilities. Mentioning the fifth priority, PM Modi highlighted the necessity of strengthening early warning systems and coordination, noting their critical role in facilitating timely decision-making and effective last-mile communication. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that discussions at the conference would address these essential aspects.
Prime Minister called for the construction of infrastructure that remains steadfast against time and tide, emphasising the need for resilience in development. He concluded by urging global efforts to build a strong and disaster-resilient future for the world. (ANI)

PM Modi to visit UK, Maldives from July 23
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-nation tour of the United Kingdom and the Maldives from July 23 to July 26, the Ministry of External Affairs announced on Sunday. During the visit to the UK, Modi is expected to unveil the bilateral trade pact that the two sides announced on May 6. 'During the visit, the Prime Minister will hold wide ranging discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the entire gamut of India-U.K. bilateral relations. They will also exchange views on issues of regional and global importance,' said the Ministry of External Affairs in the official announcement. During the visit PM Modi is scheduled to meet King Charles III. Modi had announced the trade deal with the UK on May 6 describing it as 'ambitious and mutually beneficial'. Before announcing the deal on the social media, he had held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Starmer. The negotiation for the deal that witnessed several twists because of change of multiple governments in the UK started in 2022. The British government has described the deal as 'the biggest and most economically significant bilateral trade deal'. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal paid a two-day visit to the UK in June to lay the grounds for the unveiling of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The Ministry of External Affairs said that during the visit, Modi will review the state of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), 'with a specific focus on trade and economy, technology and innovation, defence and security, climate, health, education and people to people ties.' On the invitation of Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, PM Modi's state visit to Maldives will begin on July 25. Modi will be the 'Guest of Honour' at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the independence of Maldives on July 26. 'The two leaders will also take stock of the progress in the implementation of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership,' adopted during the State Visit of the President of Maldives to India in October 2024', said the Ministry of External Affairs in the statement.

The operation was carried out after the devastating April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians, mostly tourists. The Opposition is expected to demand a detailed explanation from the Prime Minister on the military action and its broader implications. Chandigarh Congress criticises UT administration for demolition of Furniture Market
1 2 Chandigarh: Chandigarh Congress on Sunday criticised the UT administration for bulldozing and demolishing the decades-old Furniture Market, leaving hundreds of shopkeepers devastated and rendering scores of workers jobless. Congress stated that the action was undertaken in disregard of the Honourable High Court's observation that a sympathetic view be taken and that efforts be made by the administration to see if alternate sites could be allotted to the affected parties to continue their livelihood. "Rather than pursuing a humane and consultative process, the administration opted for an abrupt and arbitrary demolition without reasonable time for evacuation and without any arrangement for the protection or relocation of inventory and assets. As a result, numerous shopkeepers suffered irreparable financial losses, losing not only their goods and furniture but also the very foundations of their businesses," Congress said. Chandigarh Congress president HS Lucky strongly condemned the administration's insensitivity, saying, "What we are witnessing is not governance, but a systematic dismantling of the social fabric that binds our city. The administration has shown no regard for human suffering and no commitment to the principles of a welfare state. We demand that an immediate and comprehensive rehabilitation scheme be introduced and that alternate sites be allotted to the affected shopkeepers to enable them to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. Anything less would be a betrayal of the very ethos of governance in a democratic and socialist republic." The Congress stated that it stands firmly with the affected families and pledges to raise this matter at every appropriate forum until justice is served. It is imperative that the administration is held accountable for this gross overreach and made to answer for its repeated failure to act with fairness, compassion, and responsibility.
